KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA MARTINI
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,1 Ma l'anno quintodecimo dell'impero di Tiberio Cesare, essendo proccuratore della Giudea Ponzio Pilato, e tetrarca della Galilea Erode, e Filippo suo fratello tetrarca dell'Iturea, e della Traconitide, e Lisania tetrarca dell'Abilene,
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.2 Sotto i pontefici Anna, e Caifa, il Signore parlò a Giovanni, figliuolo di Zaccarìa nel deserto:
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;3 Ed egli andò per tutto il paese intorno al Giordano, predicando il battesimo di penitenza per la remissione de' peccati:
As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.4 Conforme sta scritto nel libro dei sermoni d'Isaia profeta: Voce di uno, che grida nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore: raddirizzate i suoi sentieri:
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;5 Tutte le valli si riempiranno, e tutti i monti, le colline si abbasseranno: e i luoghi tortuosi si raddirizzeranno, e i malagevoli si appianeranno:
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.6 E vedranno tutti gli uomini la salute di Dio.
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 Diceva adunque (Giovanni) alle torbe, che andavano per essere da lui battezzate: Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a fuggire l'ira, che vi sovrasta?
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.8 Fate adunque frutti degni di penitenza, e non vi mettete a dire: Abbiamo Abramo per padre. Imperocché io vi dico, che può Dio da queste pietre suscitar figliuoli ad Abramo.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.9 Imperocché già anche la scure è alla radice degli alberi. Ogni albero adunque, che non porta buon frutto, sarà tagliato, e gettato nel fuoco.
And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?10 E le turbe lo interrogavano, dicendo: Che abbiamo noi dunque a fare?
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.11 Ed ei rispondeva loro: Chi ha due vesti, ne dia a chi non ne ha: e il simile faccia, chi ha de' commestibili.
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?12 E andarono anche de' pubblicani, per essere battezzati, e gli dissero: Maestro, che abbiamo da fare?
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.13 Ed egli disse loro: Non esigete più di quello, che vi è stato fissato.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.14 Lo interrogavano ancora i soldati, dicendo: Che abbiamo da fare anco noi? Ed ei disse loro: Non togliete il suo ad alcuno per forza, né con frode: e contentatevi della vostra paga.
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;15 Ma stando il popolo in espettazione, e pensando tutti in cuor loro, se mai Giovanni fosse il Cristo:
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:16 Giovanni rispose, e disse a tutti: Quanto a me, io vi battezzo con acqua: ma viene uno più possente di me, di cui non son io degno di sciogliere le corregge delle scarpe: egli vi battezzerà, con lo Spirito santo, e col fuoco:
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.17 Egli avrà alla mano la sua pala e pulirà la sua aia, e ragunerà il frumento nel suo granaio; e brugerà la paglia in un fuoco inestinguibile.
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.18 E molte altre cose ancora predicava al popolo, istruendolo.
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,19 Ma Erode il tetrarca, essendo stato ripreso da lui a casa di Erodiade moglie di suo fratello, e a motivo di tutti i mali, che aveva fatti,
Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.20 Aggiunse a tutti anche questo, che rinserrò Giovanni in una prigione.
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,21 Or avvenne, che nel battezzanti tutto il popolo, essendo stato battezzato anche Gesù, e stando egli in orazione, si spalancò il cielo:
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.22 E discese lo Spirito santo sopra di lui in forma corporale come una colomba: e dal cielo venne questa voce: Tu se' il mio Figliuolo diletto; in temi, sono compiaciuto.
