KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA RICCIOTTI
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,1 - L'anno decimoquinto dell'impero di Tiberio Cesare, mentre Ponzio Pilato era governatore della Giudea, Erode tetrarca della Galilea, Filippo, suo fratello, tetrarca della Iturea e della Traconitide, e Lisania tetrarca dell'Abilene;
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.2 sotto i sommi sacerdoti Anna e Caifa, la parola di Dio si fece udire a Giovanni, figlio di Zaccaria, nel deserto.
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;3 Ed egli andò percorrendo tutti i dintorni del Giordano, predicando il battesimo di penitenza per la remissione dei peccati,
As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.4 come sta scritto nel libro dei discorsi del profeta Isaia:«Voce di colui che grida nel deserto: - Preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i suoi sentieri.
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;5 Ogni valle sarà colmata, ogni monte e ogni collina saranno abbassati; le vie torte diverranno diritte e le scabre diverranno piane;
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.6 e ogni uomo vedrà la salute di Dio -».
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 Egli dunque diceva a coloro che accorrevano in folla a farsi battezzare da lui: «Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a sfuggire l'ira che vi sovrasta?
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.8 Fate dunque frutti degni di penitenza e non mettetevi a dire: - Noi abbiamo Abramo per padre -perchè io vi dico che Dio può da queste pietre medesime suscitare figli ad Abramo.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.9 Oramai la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi. Ogni albero dunque che non dà buon frutto, sarà tagliato e gettato nel fuoco».
And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?10 Il popolo lo interrogava, dicendo: «Che dobbiamo dunque fare?».
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.11 Ed egli rispondeva: «Chi ha due tuniche ne dia una a chi non ne ha; e chi ha alimenti faccia altrettanto».
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?12 Vennero pure i pubblicani per essere battezzati, e gli domandarono: «Maestro, che cosa dobbiamo fare?».
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.13 Ed egli rispose loro: «Non esigete di più di quello che vi è stato ordinato».
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.14 Anche i soldati lo interrogarono dicendo: «E noi, che cosa dobbiamo fare?». Ed egli rispose loro: «Astenetevi da ogni vessazione e da ogni calunnia, e accontentatevi della vostra paga».
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;15 Siccome il popolo stava in attesa e tutti si domandavano in cuor loro se Giovanni non fosse lo stesso Cristo,
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:16 Giovanni disse loro: «Quanto a me, io vi battezzo con acqua; ma viene colui che è più forte di me e del quale io non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari; egli vi battezzerà con lo Spirito Santo e col fuoco.
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.17 Egli nella sua mano tiene il vaglio e purgherà la sua aia e raccoglierà il grano nel suo granaio, mentre brucerà la pula in un fuoco che non si estingue».
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.18 Così con molte altre esortazioni annunciava al popolo la buona novella.
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,19 - Ora Erode, il tetrarca, essendo stato da lui rimproverato e a motivo di Erodiade, la moglie di suo fratello, e per tutto il male che aveva fatto,
Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.20 aggiunse agli altri delitti anche questo, di far rinchiudere Giovanni in prigione.
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,21 Nel tempo in cui tutto il popolo veniva a ricevere il battesimo, Gesù pure si fece battezzare e mentre stava pregando, il cielo si aperse
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.22 e discese lo Spirito Santo sopra di lui in sembianza corporea, a guisa di colomba, e venne dal cielo una voce, che diceva: «Tu sei il mio Figliuolo diletto; in te ho riposto le mie compiacenze».
