KING JAMES BIBLENOVA VULGATA
After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.1 Erat autem Pascha et Azy ma post biduum. Et quaerebant summi sacerdoteset scribae, quomodo eum dolo tenerent et occiderent;
But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.2 dicebant enim: “ Non indie festo, ne forte tumultus fieret populi ”.
And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.3 Et cum esset Bethaniae in domo Simonis leprosi et recumberet, venit mulierhabens alabastrum unguenti nardi puri pretiosi; fracto alabastro, effudit supercaput eius.
And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?4 Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos: “ Ut quidperditio ista unguenti facta est?
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.5 Poterat enim unguentum istud veniri plusquam trecentis denariis et dari pauperibus ”. Et fremebant in eam.
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.6 Iesus autem dixit: “ Sinite eam; quid illi molesti estis? Bonum opus operataest in me.
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.7 Semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum et, cum volueritis, potestisillis bene facere; me autem non semper habetis.
She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.8 Quod habuit, operata est:praevenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.9 Amen autem dico vobis: Ubicumquepraedicatum fuerit evangelium in universum mundum, et, quod fecit haec,narrabitur in memoriam eius ”.
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.10 Et Iudas Iscarioth, unus de Duodecim, abiit ad summos sacerdotes, ut prodereteum illis.
And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.11 Qui audientes gavisi sunt et promiserunt ei pecuniam se daturos.Et quaerebat quomodo illum opportune traderet.
And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?12 Et primo die Azymorum, quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli eius:“ Quo vis eamus et paremus, ut manduces Pascha? ”.
And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.13 Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis et dicit eis: “ Ite in civitatem, etoccurret vobis homo lagoenam aquae baiulans; sequimini eum
And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?14 et, quocumqueintroierit, dicite domino domus: “Magister dicit: Ubi est refectio mea, ubiPascha cum discipulis meis manducem?”.
And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.15 Et ipse vobis demonstrabit cenaculumgrande stratum paratum; et illic parate nobis ”.
And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.16 Et abierunt discipuli etvenerunt in civitatem et invenerunt, sicut dixerat illis, et paraverunt Pascha.
And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.17 Et vespere facto, venit cum Duodecim.
And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.18 Et discumbentibus eis etmanducantibus, ait Iesus: “ Amen dico vobis: Unus ex vobis me tradet, quimanducat mecum ”.
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?19 Coeperunt contristari et dicere ei singillatim: “Numquid ego? ”.
And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.20 Qui ait illis: “ Unus ex Duodecim, qui intingit mecum incatino.
The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.21 Nam Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de eo. Vae autemhomini illi, per quem Filius hominis traditur! Bonum est ei, si non esset natushomo ille ”.
And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.22 Et manducantibus illis, accepit panem et benedicens fregit et dedit eis etait: “ Sumite: hoc est corpus meum ”.
And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.23 Et accepto calice, gratias agensdedit eis; et biberunt ex illo omnes.
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.24 Et ait illis: “ Hic est sanguis meusnovi testamenti, qui pro multis effunditur.
Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.25 Amen dico vobis: Iam non bibam degenimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei ”.
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.26 Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Olivarum.
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.27 Et ait eis Iesus: “ Omnesscandalizabimini, quia scriptum est: “Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves”.
But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.28 Sed posteaquam resurrexero, praecedam vos in Galilaeam ”.
But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.29 Petrus autemait ei: “ Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint, sed non ego ”.
And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.30 Et ait illiIesus: “ Amen dico tibi: Tu hodie, in nocte hac, priusquam bis gallus vocemdederit, ter me es negaturus ”.
But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.31 At ille amplius loquebatur: “ Et sioportuerit me commori tibi, non te negabo ”. Similiter autem et omnesdicebant.
And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.32 Et veniunt in praedium, cui nomen Gethsemani; et ait discipulis suis: “Sedete hic, donec orem ”.
And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;33 Et assumit Petrum et Iacobum et Ioannem secum etcoepit pavere et taedere;
And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.34 et ait illis: “ Tristis est anima mea usque admortem; sustinete hic et vigilate ”.
And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.35 Et cum processisset paululum,procidebat super terram et orabat, ut, si fieri posset, transiret ab eo hora;
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.36 et dicebat: “ Abba, Pater! Omnia tibi possibilia sunt. Transfer calicem hunc ame; sed non quod ego volo, sed quod tu ”.
And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?37 Et venit et invenit eosdormientes; et ait Petro: “ Simon, dormis? Non potuisti una hora vigilare?
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.38 Vigilate et orate, ut non intretis in tentationem; spiritus quidem promptus,caro vero infirma ”.
And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.39 Et iterum abiens oravit, eundem sermonem dicens.
And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.40 Etveniens denuo invenit eos dormientes; erant enim oculi illorum ingravati, etignorabant quid responderent ei.
And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 Et venit tertio et ait illis: “ Dormiteiam et requiescite? Sufficit, venit hora: ecce traditur Filius hominis in manuspeccatorum.
Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.42 Surgite, eamus; ecce, qui me tradit, prope est ”.
And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43 Et confestim, adhuc eo loquente, venit Iudas unus ex Duodecim, et cum illoturba cum gladiis et lignis a summis sacerdotibus et scribis et senioribus.
And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.44 Dederat autem traditor eius signum eis dicens: “ Quemcumque osculatus fuero,ipse est; tenete eum et ducite caute ”.
And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.45 Et cum venisset, statim accedens adeum ait: “ Rabbi ”; et osculatus est eum.
And they laid their hands on him, and took him.46 At illi manus iniecerunt in eumet tenuerunt eum.
And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.47 Unus autem quidam de circumstantibus educens gladiumpercussit servum summi sacerdotis et amputavit illi auriculam.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?48 Et respondensIesus ait illis: “ Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et ligniscomprehendere me?
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.49 Cotidie eram apud vos in templo docens, et non metenuistis; sed adimpleantur Scripturae ”.
And they all forsook him, and fled.50 Et relinquentes eum omnes fugerunt.
And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:51 Et adulescens quidam sequebatur eumamictus sindone super nudo, et tenent eum;
And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.52 at ille, reiecta sindone, nudusprofugit.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.53 Et adduxerunt Iesum ad summum sacerdotem; et conveniunt omnes summisacerdotes et seniores et scribae.
And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.54 Et Petrus a longe secutus est eum usqueintro in atrium summi sacerdotis et sedebat cum ministris et calefaciebat se adignem.
And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.55 Summi vero sacerdotes et omne concilium quaerebant adversus Iesumtestimonium, ut eum morte afficerent, nec inveniebant.
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.56 Multi enim testimoniumfalsum dicebant adversus eum, et convenientia testimonia non erant.
And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,57 Et quidamsurgentes falsum testimonium ferebant adversus eum dicentes:
We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.58 “ Nosaudivimus eum dicentem: “Ego dissolvam templum hoc manu factum et intratriduum aliud non manu factum aedificabo” ”.
But neither so did their witness agree together.59 Et ne ita quidem convenienserat testimonium illorum.
And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?60 Et exsurgens summus sacerdos in medium interrogavitIesum dicens: “ Non respondes quidquam ad ea, quae isti testantur adversum te?”.
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?61 Ille autem tacebat et nihil respondit. Rursum summus sacerdosinterrogabat eum et dicit ei: “ Tu es Christus filius Benedicti? ”.
And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.62 Iesusautem dixit: “ Ego sum, et videbitis Filium hominis a dextris sedentemVirtutis et venientem cum nubibus caeli ”.
Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?63 Summus autem sacerdos scindens vestimenta sua ait: “ Quid adhuc necessariisunt nobis testes?
Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.64 Audistis blasphemiam. Quid vobis videtur? ”. Qui omnescondemnaverunt eum esse reum mortis.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.65 Et coeperunt quidam conspuere eum et velare faciem eius et colaphis eumcaedere et dicere ei: “ Prophetiza ”; et ministri alapis eum caedebant.
And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:66 Et cum esset Petrus in atrio deorsum, venit una ex ancillis summi sacerdotis
And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.67 et, cum vidisset Petrum calefacientem se, aspiciens illum ait: “ Et tu cumhoc Nazareno, Iesu, eras! ”.
But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.68 At ille negavit dicens: “ Neque scio nequenovi quid tu dicas! ”. Et exiit foras ante atrium, et gallus cantavit.
And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.69 Etancilla, cum vidisset illum, rursus coepit dicere circumstantibus: “ Hic exillis est! ”.
And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.70 At ille iterum negabat. Et post pusillum rursus, quiastabant, dicebant Petro: “ Vere ex illis es, nam et Galilaeus es ”.
But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.71 Illeautem coepit anathematizare et iurare: “ Nescio hominem istum, quem dicitis!”.
And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.72 Et statim iterum gallus cantavit; et recordatus est Petrus verbi, sicutdixerat ei Iesus: “ Priusquam gallus cantet bis, ter me negabis ”. Et coepitflere.
