1 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.	1 - Giunsero i figli d'Israele e tutta la moltitudine nel deserto di Sin, il mese primo, ed il popolo si fermò in Cades. Ivi morì Maria, e nello stesso luogo fu sepolta.
2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.	2 Ora, trovandosi il popolo senza acqua s'assembrò contro Mosè ed Aronne,
3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!	3 e fatta sedizione dissero: «Meglio per noi se fossimo periti con gli altri nostri fratelli per mano del Signore!
4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?	4 Perchè avete condotto il popolo del Signore nel deserto, per farvi morire noi ed i nostri animali?
5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.	5 Perchè ci faceste venir via dall'Egitto, e ci avete condotti in questo luogo disgraziato, che non si può seminare, che non dà nè fichi, nè uva, nè melagrane, e per di più non ha acqua da bere?».
6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.	6 Mosè ed Aronne, congedata la moltitudine, entrarono nel tabernacolo dell'alleanza e gettatisi per terra gridarono al Signore, e dissero: «Signore Iddio, ascolta il grido di questo popolo ed apri a loro il tuo tesoro, una fonte d'acqua viva, acciò si dissetino e cessino dal mormorare». Apparve su loro la gloria del Signore,
7 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,	7 ed il Signore parlò a Mosè, e gli disse:
8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.	8 «Prendi la verga, e tu ed Aronne tuo fratello radunate il popolo; presente il popolo, comandate a quel masso, e darà acqua. Quando avrai cavato l'acqua dal masso, ne beverà tutto il popolo co' suoi animali».
9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.	9 Mosè dunque prese la verga che stava innanzi al Signore [nel tabernacolo] come gli aveva comandato,
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?	10 e radunata la moltitudine davanti al masso, disse loro: «Udite, o ribelli ed increduli: potremo noi farvi uscire dell'acqua da questo masso?».
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.	11 Levata poi la mano, percosse due volte con la verga la pietra, e ne uscirono acque copiosissime, tanto che ne bevvero il popolo e gli animali.
12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.	12 Ma il Signore disse a Mosè ed Aronne: «Poichè non m'avete creduto, nè m'avete glorificato innanzi a' figli d'Israele, non introdurrete questa gente nella terra ch'io darò loro».
13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.	13 Quel luogo fu chiamato "L'acqua della contradizione", perchè ivi i figli d'Israele contesero col Signore, ed egli mostrò loro la sua grandezza.
14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:	14 Mosè frattanto mandò da Cades degli ambasciatori al re di Edom, a dirgli: «Questo ti fa sapere il fratello tuo Israele: - Tu conosci tutt'i travagli che ci hanno colpiti;
15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:	15 come i padri nostri migrarono in Egitto, e noi v'abitammo molto tempo, e gli Egiziani angariarono noi ed i padri nostri;
16 And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:	16 come noi gridammo al Signore, ed egli ci esaudì mandandoci un angelo che ci cavò dall'Egitto. Ecco, trovandoci noi nella città di Cades che è agli ultimi tuoi confini,
17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.	17 preghiamo che ci sia concesso passare attraverso alla tua terra. Non passeremo pei campi nè per le vigne, nè consumeremo l'acqua de' tuoi pozzi, ma andremo per la strada maestra, non piegando nè a destra nè a sinistra, sinchè abbiamo oltrepassato i tuoi confini -».
18 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.	18 Ma Edom rispose: «Non passerai attraverso le mie terre, altrimenti ti verrò incontro con le armi».
19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.	19 Ed i figli d'Israele dissero: «Andremo per la via battuta, e se noi ed i nostri animali beveremo delle tue acque, pagheremo quello che è giusto; non faremo difficoltà per il prezzo, purchè possiamo passare speditamente».
20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.	20 Ma quegli rispose: «Non passerai». E subito gli si mosse contro con una sterminata moltitudine di forti armati,
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.	21 nè volle accontentare chi chiedeva gli fosse concesso di passare pei suoi confini. Laonde Israele girò lontano da lui.
22 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.	22 Levati dunque gli accampamenti da Cades, vennero al monte Hor, ai confini della terra di Edom.
23 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,	23 Ivi il Signore parlò a Mosè,
24 Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.	24 e disse: «Torni Aronne al popolo suo; giacchè non entrerà nella terra che ho assegnato a' figli d'Israele, essendo stato incredulo alle mie parole alle Acque della contradizione.
25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:	25 Prendi Aronne, ed il figlio suo con lui, e conducili sul monte Hor.
26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.	26 Spogliato che avrai delle sue vesti il padre, ne vestirai Eleazaro figlio suo. Aronne morrà lì, e si riunirà [a' suoi padri]».
27 And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.	27 Fece Mosè come il Signore gli aveva comandato, e salirono sul monte Hor a vista di tutto il popolo.
28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.	28 Poi, avendo spogliato Aronne delle sue vesti [pontificali], ne rivestì il figlio suo Eleazaro.
29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.	29 E dopo che quegli fu morto sulla sommità del monte, discese con Eleazaro.
	30 Ora tutto il popolo, visto che Aronne era morto, lo pianse in tutte le sue famiglie per trenta giorni.
