KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,1 The LORD said to Moses:
Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.2 "Make two trumpets of beaten silver, which you shall use in assembling the community and in breaking camp.
And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.3 When both are blown, the whole community shall gather round you at the entrance of the meeting tent;
And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.4 but when one of them is blown, only the princes, the chiefs of the troops of Israel, shall gather round you.
When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.5 When you sound the first alarm, those encamped on the east side shall set out;
When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.6 when you sound the second alarm, those encamped on the south side shall set out; when you sound the third alarm, those encamped on the west side shall set out; when you sound the fourth alarm, those encamped on the north side shall set out. Thus shall the alarm be sounded for them to depart.
But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm.7 But in calling forth an assembly you are to blow an ordinary blast, without sounding the alarm.
And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.8 "It is the sons of Aaron, the priests, who shall blow the trumpets; and the use of them is prescribed by perpetual statute for you and your descendants.
And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.9 When in your own land you go to war against an enemy that is attacking you, you shall sound the alarm on the trumpets, and the LORD, your God, will remember you and save you from your foes.
Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.10 On your days of celebration, your festivals, and your new-moon feasts, you shall blow the trumpets over your holocausts and your peace offerings; this will serve as a reminder of you before your God. I, the LORD, am your God."
And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.11 In the second year, on the twentieth day of the second month, the cloud rose from the Dwelling of the commandments.
And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.12 The Israelites moved on from the desert of Sinai by stages, until the cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran.
And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.13 The first time that they broke camp at the bidding of the LORD through Moses,
In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.14 the camp of the Judahites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the first to set out. Nahshon, son of Amminadab, was over their host,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethaneel the son of Zuar.15 and Nethanel, son of Zuar, over the host of the tribe of Issachar,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.16 and Eliab, son of Helon, over the host of the tribe of Zebulun.
And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle.17 Then, after the Dwelling was dismantled, the clans of Gershon and Merari set out, carrying the Dwelling.
And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.18 The camp of the Reubenites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the next to set out, with Elizur, son of Shedeur, over their host,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.19 and Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, over the host of the tribe of Simeon,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.20 and Eliasaph, son of Reuel, over the host of the tribe of Gad.
And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.21 The clan of Kohath then set out, carrying the sacred objects for the Dwelling, which was to be erected before their arrival.
And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.22 The camp of the Ephraimites next set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Elishama, son of Ammihud, over their host,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.23 and Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, over the host of the tribe of Manasseh,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.24 and Abidan, son of Gideoni, over the host of the tribe of Benjamin.
And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.25 Finally, as rear guard for all the camps, the camp of the Danites set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, over their host,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran.26 and Pagiel, son of Ochran, over the host of the tribe of Asher,
And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.27 and Ahira, son of Enan, over the host of the tribe of Naphtali.
Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.28 This was the order of departure for the Israelites, company by company. As they were setting out,
And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.29 Moses said to his brother-in-law Hobab, son of Reuel the Midianite, "We are setting out for the place which the LORD has promised to give us. Come with us, and we will be generous toward you, for the LORD has promised prosperity to Israel."
And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.30 But he answered, "No, I will not come. I am going instead to my own country and to my own kindred."
And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.31 Moses said, "Please, do not leave us; you know where we can camp in the desert, and you will serve as eyes for us.
And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.32 If you come with us, we will share with you the prosperity the LORD will bestow on us."
And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.33 They moved on from the mountain of the LORD, a three days' journey, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD which was to seek out their resting place went the three days' journey with them.
And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.34 And when they set out from camp, the cloud of the LORD was over them by day.
And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, "Arise, O LORD, that your enemies may be scattered, and those who hate you may flee before you."
And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel.36 And when it came to rest, he would say, "Return, O LORD, you who ride upon the clouds, to the troops of Israel."
