Jeremiah 42

1 Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,	1 Les chefs de l’armée, Yohanan fils de Karéa, et Azarias fils de Hochayas, vinrent alors trouver le prophète Jérémie avec tout le peuple, petits et grands,
2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)	2 et ils lui dirent: “Écoute notre demande! Prie Yahvé ton Dieu pour nous et pour tout ce reste. Comme tu peux le voir toi-même, nous restons bien peu sur tout le nombre que nous étions.
3 That the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.	3 Que Yahvé ton Dieu nous montre le chemin que nous devons suivre et ce que nous devons faire.”
4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.	4 Le prophète Jérémie leur dit: “J’ai entendu; oui, je vais prier Yahvé votre Dieu selon votre demande, et tout ce que Yahvé répondra à votre sujet, je vous le ferai savoir. Je ne vous cacherai rien.”
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.	5 Ils dirent encore à Jérémie: “Nous nous engageons à faire ce que Yahvé, ton Dieu, nous dira à travers toi: que Yahvé en soit le témoin vrai et fidèle.
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.	6 Que ce soit facile ou non à accepter, nous écouterons la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu que nous t’envoyons consulter. Car nous ne pouvons réussir que si nous écoutons la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu.”
7 And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.	7 Au bout de dix jours, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jérémie.
8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,	8 Il appela Yohanan fils de Karéa et tous les chefs de l’armée qui étaient avec lui, ainsi que tout le peuple, du plus petit jusqu’au plus grand.
9 And said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him;	9 Il leur dit: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, vers lequel vous m’avez envoyé, et à qui j’ai transmis votre demande:
10 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.	10 “Si vous restez pour de bon dans ce pays, je vous rétablirai après vous avoir détruits, je vous planterai après vous avoir déracinés, et même je regretterai tout le mal que je vous ai fait.
11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.	11 “N’ayez pas peur du roi de Babylone devant lequel vous tremblez; n’ayez pas peur de lui - parole de Yahvé - car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et pour vous délivrer de sa main.
12 And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.	12 Je vous accorderai la pitié et il aura pitié de vous; il vous fera revenir sur votre terre.
13 But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God,	13 “Mais si vous n’écoutez pas la voix de Yahvé votre Dieu,
14 Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:	14 et qu’au lieu de cela vous dites: Nous ne resterons pas dans ce pays; c’est au pays d’Égypte que nous irons, là nous ne verrons plus la guerre, nous n’entendrons plus le son de la trompette, nous ne connaîtrons plus la faim de pain, c’est là que nous resterons -
15 And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye remnant of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;	15 alors, écoutez la parole de Yahvé: “Reste de Juda, voici ce que dit Yahvé Sabaot, le Dieu d’Israël: Si vous tournez vos regards vers l’Égypte, si vous y entrez pour vous y installer,
16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.	16 l’épée dont vous avez peur vous rejoindra là, au pays d’Égypte, et la famine que vous redoutez s’attachera à vous en Égypte; c’est là que vous mourrez.
17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.	17 Tous les hommes qui auront tourné leur regard vers l’Égypte pour s’y installer, mourront par l’épée, la famine et la peste. Il n’y aura ni survivant, ni fuyard, quand j’amènerai sur eux le malheur.
18 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.	18 “Oui, voici ce que dit Yahvé Sabaot, le Dieu d’Israël: Vous avez vu comment ma violente colère s’est déchaînée contre les habitants de Jérusalem; de même ma fureur se déchaînera contre vous lorsque vous entrerez en Égypte; vous deviendrez une honte et une ruine, une malédiction et une moquerie, et vous ne reverrez plus ce lieu.
19 The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.	19 “Voilà ce que Yahvé a annoncé à votre sujet, Reste de Juda. N’entrez pas en Égypte. Sachez bien qu’aujourd’hui je vous avertis solennellement.
20 For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.	20 Vous vous trompiez vous-mêmes lorsque vous m’avez envoyé vers Yahvé votre Dieu, et que vous m’avez dit: Prie Yahvé notre Dieu pour nous, et tout ce que Yahvé notre Dieu dira, dis-le nous et nous le ferons.
21 And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.	21 Vous voyez, aujourd’hui je vous l’annonce mais vous n’écoutez pas Yahvé votre Dieu et toutes ces paroles qu’il vous adresse par moi.
22 Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn.	22 Maintenant, sachez-le bien, vous mourrez par l’épée, la famine et la peste dans ce lieu où vous voulez aller et vous installer.”
