1 Then shall the righteous man stand in great boldness before the face of such as have afflicted him, and made no account of his labours.	1 Alors le juste se tiendra, plein d’assurance face à ceux qui l’ont persécuté, qui ont réduit à rien tous ses efforts.
2 When they see it, they shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the strangeness of his salvation, so far beyond all that they looked for.	2 En le voyant ils seront saisis d’une peur énorme, stupéfaits de le voir sauvé contre toute attente.
3 And they repenting and groaning for anguish of spirit shall say within themselves, This was he, whom we had sometimes in derision, and a proverb of reproach:	3 Pleins de remords, ils se diront, pris d’angoisse, avec des gémissements:
4 We fools accounted his life madness, and his end to be without honour:	4 “C’est lui que nous tournions en dérision, notre tête de turc: imbéciles que nous étions! Sa vie nous semblait une folie, sa mort nous a paru l’échec final.
5 How is he numbered among the children of God, and his lot is among the saints!	5 Et voyez, on l’a admis parmi les fils de Dieu: comment a-t-il reçu sa place parmi les saints?
6 Therefore have we erred from the way of truth, and the light of righteousness hath not shined unto us, and the sun of righteousness rose not upon us.	6 Comme nous avons erré, loin de la vérité! La lumière de la justice ne nous éclairait pas, le soleil ne s’est pas levé sur nous.
7 We wearied ourselves in the way of wickedness and destruction: yea, we have gone through deserts, where there lay no way: but as for the way of the Lord, we have not known it.	7 Nous nous sommes rassasiés d’injustices et de crimes, parcourant des déserts dont nous ne sortions pas, au lieu de reconnaître la voie du Seigneur.
8 What hath pride profited us? or what good hath riches with our vaunting brought us?	8 À quoi notre orgueil nous a-t-il servi? Que nous a valu la richesse dont nous nous vantions?
9 All those things are passed away like a shadow, and as a post that hasted by;	9 Tout cela a passé comme une ombre, comme une rumeur qui s’efface,
10 And as a ship that passeth over the waves of the water, which when it is gone by, the trace thereof cannot be found, neither the pathway of the keel in the waves;	10 comme le navire qui fend l’écume des eaux et de son passage il n’y a pas de trace, nulle empreinte de sa quille dans les flots.
11 Or as when a bird hath flown through the air, there is no token of her way to be found, but the light air being beaten with the stroke of her wings and parted with the violent noise and motion of them, is passed through, and therein afterwards no sign where she went is to be found;	11 Ou comme l’oiseau qui traverse l’espace, et nul n’y retrouve les vestiges de sa course; qui ne laisse aucune marque de son passage. Ses plumes ont frappé l’air léger, il l’a fendu avec un sifflement, à tire d’ailes il s’est frayé un chemin, et puis, qui trouvera un signe de son vol?
12 Or like as when an arrow is shot at a mark, it parteth the air, which immediately cometh together again, so that a man cannot know where it went through:	12 Telle est encore la flèche décochée vers le but: à peine divisé, l’air revient sur lui-même, sans plus laisser voir son chemin.
13 Even so we in like manner, as soon as we were born, began to draw to our end, and had no sign of virtue to shew; but were consumed in our own wickedness.	13 Nous de même, à peine nés nous avons disparu; nous nous sommes dépensés dans nos méfaits et n’avons aucun mérite que nous puissions montrer.”
14 For the hope of the Godly is like dust that is blown away with the wind; like a thin froth that is driven away with the storm; like as the smoke which is dispersed here and there with a tempest, and passeth away as the remembrance of a guest that tarrieth but a day.	14 Oui, l’espoir des impies est comme la paille lorsque le vent l’emporte, ou le flocon de neige chassé par la tempête, comme la fumée que dissipe le vent, ou le souvenir de l’hôte d’un jour: effacé!
15 But the righteous live for evermore; their reward also is with the Lord, and the care of them is with the most High.	15 Les justes, eux, vivent pour toujours, et leur récompense est auprès du Seigneur: chez le Très-Haut on a pris soin d’eux.
16 Therefore shall they receive a glorious kingdom, and a beautiful crown from the Lord's hand: for with his right hand shall he cover them, and with his arm shall he protect them.	16 Ils vont recevoir de la main du Seigneur la couronne magnifique, le diadème étincelant; de sa main droite il les couvrira, de son bras il les protégera.
17 He shall take to him his jealousy for complete armour, and make the creature his weapon for the revenge of his enemies.	17 Son amour jaloux lui fait déployer ses armes, il arme l’univers pour punir ses ennemis.
18 He shall put on righteousness as a breastplate, and true judgment instead of an helmet.	18 Il prend la droiture pour cuirasse, il a choisi pour casque ses jugements équitables.
19 He shall take holiness for an invincible shield.	19 Sa sainteté invincible lui sert de bouclier,
20 His severe wrath shall he sharpen for a sword, and the world shall fight with him against the unwise.	20 de sa colère inflexible il s’est fait une épée, et l’univers avec lui combat les insensés.
21 Then shall the right aiming thunderbolts go abroad; and from the clouds, as from a well drawn bow, shall they fly to the mark.	21 Les coups de la foudre frapperont droit au but, décochés des nuages comme d’un arc bien tendu;
22 And hailstones full of wrath shall be cast as out of a stone bow, and the water of the sea shall rage against them, and the floods shall cruelly drown them.	22 les grêlons de sa colère s’abattront sur eux, l’océan s’indignera contre eux, et les fleuves les noieront sans pitié.
23 Yea, a mighty wind shall stand up against them, and like a storm shall blow them away: thus iniquity shall lay waste the whole earth, and ill dealing shall overthrow the thrones of the mighty.	23 Le souffle de sa Puissance se lèvera contre eux et comme un ouragan les dispersera. Leur péché aura fait de la terre un désert, les méfaits des puissants auront renversé leurs trônes.
