1 But thou, O God, art gracious and true, longsuffering, and in mercy ordering all things,	1 Ma tu Dio nostro, tu se' benigno, e verace, e paziente, e tutto governi con misericordia:
2 For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine.	2 Imperocché se noi peccheremo, siamo tuoi, noi che conosciamo la tua grandezza, e se non peccheremo, sappiamo che tu tieni conto di noi:
3 For to know thee is perfect righteousness: yea, to know thy power is the root of immortality.	3 Perocché il conoscer te è la perfezione della giustizia, e il conoscere la giustizia, e potenza tua, è radice di immortalità.
4 For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us, nor an image spotted with divers colours, the painter's fruitless labour;	4 Conciossiachè non ha indotti noi in errore la invenzione maligna degli uomini, né il vano artifizio di un'ombreggiata pittura, od una immagine co' vari colori rappresentata,
5 The sight whereof enticeth fools to lust after it, and so they desire the form of a dead image, that hath no breath.	5 Di cui la vista sveglia la cupidità dello stolto, che ama la avvenenza di un morto ritratto senz'anima.
6 Both they that make them, they that desire them, and they that worship them, are lovers of evil things, and are worthy to have such things to trust upon.	6 Quelli, che amano il male, sono degni di avere speranza in cose tali, e quelli pur, che lo fanno, e que', che le amano, e quelli, che le onorano.
7 For the potter, tempering soft earth, fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service: yea, of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses, and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary: but what is the use of either sort, the potter himself is the judge.	7 Similmente un vasaio maneggiando la molle creta con molta fatica ne forma per nostro uso de' vasi di ogni sorte, e' della medesima pasta ne fa de' vasi per usi onesti, e similmente de' vasi per usi contrari: e dell'uso, a cui debban servire que' vasi ne è arbitro il vasaio;
8 And employing his labours lewdly, he maketh a vain god of the same clay, even he which a little before was made of earth himself, and within a little while after returneth to the same, out when his life which was lent him shall be demanded.	8 E con vana fatica della stessa pasta né forma un Dio, egli, che poco prima fu di terra creato, e di qui a poco ritorna donde fu tratto, allorché gli sarà ridomandata quell'anima, di cui è debitore.
9 Notwithstanding his care is, not that he shall have much labour, nor that his life is short: but striveth to excel goldsmiths and silversmiths, and endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass, and counteth it his glory to make counterfeit things.	9 Ma egli non pensa alla fatica, che soffre, né alla brevità di sua vita, ma fa a picca cogli orefici, e argentieri, ed imita anche i bronzisti, e pone la sua gloria nel formare cose inutili,
10 His heart is ashes, his hope is more vile than earth, and his life of less value than clay:	10 Perché il suo cuore è cenere, e la speranza di lui è men pregevole della terra, e la vita di lui è più vile del fango:
11 Forasmuch as he knew not his Maker, and him that inspired into him an active soul, and breathed in a living spirit.	11 Mentre egli non conosce colui, che lo ha formato, e gli ispirò quell'anima, mediante la quale egli opera, e soffo in lui lo spirito di vita.
12 But they counted our life a pastime, and our time here a market for gain: for, say they, we must be getting every way, though it be by evil means.	12 Costoro anzi han creduto, che sia un giucco la nostra vita, e che tutta la nostra occupazione abbia da essere pel guadagno, e che convenga cercar di far roba anche col malfare:
13 For this man, that of earthly matter maketh brittle vessels and graven images, knoweth himself to offend above all others.	13 Perocché ben sa, che più di tutti egli pecca colui, che di fragil materia forma de' vasi, e de' simolacri.
14 And all the enemies of thy people, that hold them in subjection, are most foolish, and are more miserable than very babes.	14 Ma son tutti stolti, e sgraziati, e superbi più che anima nata i nemici del popol tuo, i quali lo dominano,
15 For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods: which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle; and as for their feet, they are slow to go.	15 Perché eglino credono dei tutti gli idoli delle genti, i quali non hanno l'uso degli occhi per vedere, né delle narici per respirare, né degli orecchi per udire, né delle dita delle mani per toccare, e i piedi stessi hanno incapaci di muoversi:
16 For man made them, and he that borrowed his own spirit fashioned them: but no man can make a god like unto himself.	16 Perocché un uomo li fece, e formolli uno, a cui fu dato in prestito lo spirito: e nissun uomo potrà mai fare un Dio simile a se;
17 For being mortal, he worketh a dead thing with wicked hands: for he himself is better than the things which he worshippeth: whereas he lived once, but they never.	17 Ed essendo egli mortale colle inique sue mani forma un morto; onde egli è da più di quelli, che adora, perchè egli benché mortale ha ottenuto la vita, ma quelli non mai.
18 Yea, they worshipped those beasts also that are most hateful: for being compared together, some are worse than others.	18 Ma essi rendono culto ai più odiosi i animali, i quali paragonati coll'altre bestie prive di sentimento son di queste peggiori.
19 Neither are they beautiful, so much as to be desired in respect of beasts: but they went without the praise of God and his blessing.	19 Né alcuno può nell'aspetto istesso di quegli animali osservare alcun bene, come quelli, che han perduta l'approvazione, e la benedizione di Dio.
