1 But thou, O God, art gracious and true, longsuffering, and in mercy ordering all things,	1 Mas tú, Dios nuestro, eres bueno y verdadero, paciente y que con misericordia gobiernas el universo.
2 For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine.	2 Aunque pequemos, tuyos somos, porque conocemos tu poder; pero no pecaremos, porque sabemos que somos contados por tuyos.
3 For to know thee is perfect righteousness: yea, to know thy power is the root of immortality.	3 Pues el conocerte a ti es la perfecta justicia y conocer tu poder, la raíz de la inmortalidad.
4 For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us, nor an image spotted with divers colours, the painter's fruitless labour;	4 A nosotros no nos extraviaron las creaciones humanas de un arte perverso, ni el inútil trabajo de los pintores, figuras embadurnadas de colores abigarrados,
5 The sight whereof enticeth fools to lust after it, and so they desire the form of a dead image, that hath no breath.	5 cuya contemplación despierta la pasión en los insensatos que codician la figura sin aliento de una imagen muerta.
6 Both they that make them, they that desire them, and they that worship them, are lovers of evil things, and are worthy to have such things to trust upon.	6 Apasionados del mal son y dignos de tales esperanzas los que las crean, los que las codician, los que las adoran.
7 For the potter, tempering soft earth, fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service: yea, of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses, and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary: but what is the use of either sort, the potter himself is the judge.	7 Un alfarero trabaja laboriosamente la tierra blanda y modela diversas piezas, todas para nuestro uso; unas van destinadas a usos nobles, otras al contrario, pero todas las modela de igual manera y de la misma arcilla. Sobre el servicio diverso que unas y otras han de prestar, es el alfarero quien decide.
8 And employing his labours lewdly, he maketh a vain god of the same clay, even he which a little before was made of earth himself, and within a little while after returneth to the same, out when his life which was lent him shall be demanded.	8 Pero luego - ¡mala pena que se toma! - de la misma arcilla modela una vana divinidad. Y la modela él, que poco ha nació de la tierra y que pronto habrá de volver a la tierra de donde fue sacado, cuando le reclamen la devolución de su alma.
9 Notwithstanding his care is, not that he shall have much labour, nor that his life is short: but striveth to excel goldsmiths and silversmiths, and endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass, and counteth it his glory to make counterfeit things.	9 Pero no se preocupa de que va a morir, de que es efímera su vida; antes rivaliza con orfebres y plateros, imita las obras del broncista y se ufana de modelar falsificaciones.
10 His heart is ashes, his hope is more vile than earth, and his life of less value than clay:	10 Escoria es su corazón, más vil que la tierra su esperanza, más abyecta que la arcilla su vida,
11 Forasmuch as he knew not his Maker, and him that inspired into him an active soul, and breathed in a living spirit.	11 porque desconoció al que le modeló a él, al que le inspiró un alma activa y le infundió un espíritu vivificante.
12 But they counted our life a pastime, and our time here a market for gain: for, say they, we must be getting every way, though it be by evil means.	12 Piensa que la existencia es un juego de niños y la vida, un lucrativo mercado: «Es preciso ganar, dice, por todos los medios, aun malos».
13 For this man, that of earthly matter maketh brittle vessels and graven images, knoweth himself to offend above all others.	13 Este hombre más que nadie sabe que peca, como quien de una misma masa de tierra fabrica frágiles piezas y estatuas de ídolos.
14 And all the enemies of thy people, that hold them in subjection, are most foolish, and are more miserable than very babes.	14 Insensatos todos en sumo grado y más infelices que el alma de un niño, los enemigos de tu pueblo que un día le oprimieron;
15 For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods: which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle; and as for their feet, they are slow to go.	15 como que tuvieron por dioses a todos los ídolos de los gentiles, que no pueden valerse de los ojos para ver, ni de la nariz para respirar, ni de los oídos para oír, ni de los dedos de las manos para tocar, y sus pies son torpes para andar.
16 For man made them, and he that borrowed his own spirit fashioned them: but no man can make a god like unto himself.	16 Al fin, un hombre los hizo, uno que recibió en préstamo el espíritu los modeló; y no hay hombre que modele un dios igual a sí mismo;
17 For being mortal, he worketh a dead thing with wicked hands: for he himself is better than the things which he worshippeth: whereas he lived once, but they never.	17 mortal como es, un ser muerto produce con sus manos impías. Vale ciertamente más que las cosas que adora: él, un tiempo al menos, goza de vida, ellos jamás.
18 Yea, they worshipped those beasts also that are most hateful: for being compared together, some are worse than others.	18 Adoran, además, a los bichos más repugnantes que en estupidez superan a todos los demás;
19 Neither are they beautiful, so much as to be desired in respect of beasts: but they went without the praise of God and his blessing.	19 ni siquiera poseen la belleza de los animales que, a su modo, cautiva al contemplarlos; están excluidos de la aprobación de Dios y de su bendición.
