1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;	1 Pense à ton Créateur aux jours de ta jeunesse, avant la venue des jours mauvais, des années qui s’approchent, dont tu diras: “Je n’en attends plus rien”,
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:	2 avant que le soleil, la lumière, la lune et les étoiles se perdent dans le noir, et que reviennent les nuages sitôt après la pluie.
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,	3 C’est alors que tremblent les gardiens de la maison, c’est le temps où se courbent les porteurs, où les meules, ce qu’il en reste, cessent de moudre, et les voyantes sont dans le noir derrière leurs fenêtres;
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;	4 l’heure où la porte se ferme sur la rue, et le bruit du moulin s’arrête; où la voix de l’oiseau ne réveille plus, et les chansons se sont tues.
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:	5 On redoute alors les montées, et les fondrières sur le chemin; l’amandier est en fleurs, la sauterelle est repue, le câprier donne son fruit. Voici l’homme en route pour sa maison d’éternité, et les pleureuses faisant le cercle au coin de la rue.
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.	6 Le fil d’argent n’ira pas plus loin: on s’est arrêté de le filer; la lampe d’or s’est brisée, la cruche s’est fracassée à la fontaine, et la poulie sur le puits a cédé.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.	7 La poussière retourne à la terre dont elle était venue, et l’esprit remonte à Dieu qui l’a donné.
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.	8 Rien qui tienne! disait Qohélet, on n’a de prise sur rien!
9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.	9 Oui, Qohélet était un sage, un sage qui a enseigné le savoir au peuple; il a pesé, examiné et corrigé un grand nombre de proverbes.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.	10 Qohélet s’efforçait de bien tourner ses sentences, il mettait par écrit des vérités, de façon directe.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.	11 Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons; un recueil de sentences est comme une palissade où le même pasteur a tout assemblé.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.	12 Garde-toi, mon fils, d’y ajouter: quand on multiplie les livres, c’est sans fin, et trop d’étude épuise le corps.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.	13 Conclusion du discours: tout a été dit. Crains Dieu et observe ses commandements: c’est là le tout de l’homme.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.	14 Car Dieu jugera toutes les actions, même ce qui est caché, le bien comme le mal.
