1 Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media to get him help to fight against Tryphone.	1 L'anno centosettantadue il re Demetrio messe insieme il suo esercito, e andò nella Media per adunare soccorsi, affin di vincere Trifone.
2 But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive:	2 E Arsace re della Persia e della Media avendo udito come Demetrio era entrato sui suoi confini, mandò uno de' suoi capitani, perché lo prendesse vivo, e gliel conducesse.
3 Who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward.	3 E quegli andò, e mise in rotta l'esercito di Demetrio, e lo prese, e lo condusse ad Arsace, il quale lo fece mettere in prigione.
4 As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well.	4 Or tutto il paese di Giuda fu in pace a tempo di Simone. Egli cercò i vantaggi di sua nazione, la quale vide sempre con piacere la sua possanza, e la sua gloria.
5 And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppa for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea,	5 E oltre tutto le altre cose gloriose fatte da lui, egli ridusse Joppe a porta, che servisse di scala pe' paesi marittimi.
6 And enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country,	6 E ampliò i confini della sua gente, e fu padrone del paese.
7 And gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazera, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleaness, neither was there any that resisted him.	7 E raunò gran numero di prigionieri, ed ebbe il dominio di Gazara e di Bethsara e della cittadella e ne tolse via le immondezze, e non vi fù chi contrastasse con lui.
8 Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit.	8 E ciascheduno coltivava in pace la sua terra: e la terra di Giuda dava le sue raccolte, e le piante de' campi davano il loro frutto.
9 The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel.	9 I sentori si stavan sedendo nelle piazze, e trattavano delle utilità del paese, e la gioventù, si vestiva di splendide vesti e di abiti militari.
10 He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world.	10 Egli distribuiva de' viveri nelle città, e le rendeva come tante fortezze, talmente che il suo nome, e la sua gloria si sparse sino agli ultimi confini del mondo.
11 He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy:	11 Egli diede la tranquillità al paese, e Israele n'ebbe grande allegrezza.
12 For every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them:	12 Onde ciascheduno potea stare assiso all'ombra della sua vite e della sua ficaia, senta che ci fosse chi gli desse timore.
13 Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days.	13 Non restava sulla terra chi li molestasse: i regi in quel tempo erano abbattuti.
14 Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away.	14 Egli fa il protettore dei piccoli del suo popolo, fu zelante dell'onor della legge, e sterminò gl'iniqui e i malvagj:
15 He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied vessels of the temple.	15 Ornò di gloria il santuario, e accrebbe il numero dei vasi santi.
16 Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry.	16 Or la nuovo della morte di Gionata pervenne sino a Roma e a Sparta, e arrecò loro gran dispiacere.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein:	17 Ma avendo udito come Simone suo fratello era stato fatto sommo Sacerdote in luogo di lui, ed egli avea la signoria del paese e di quelle città;
18 They wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren:	18 Scrissero a lui in tavole di bronzo per rinnovare l'amicizia e la confederazione fatta con Giuda e con Gionata suoi fratelli.
19 Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem.	19 E le lettere furon lette in Gerusalemme davanti a tutta la moltitudine. E questa é la copia della lettera scritta dagli Sparziati:
20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:	20 I principi e le città degli Sparziati a Simone sommo Sacerdote e ai seniori e a sacerdoti e a tutto il popolo de' Giudei fratelli, salute.
21 The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming,	21 Gli ambasciadori mandati da voi al nostro popolo ci hanno dato parte della gloria e della felicità e contentezza vostra, e la loro venuta ci ha fatto molto piacere.
22 And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews' ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.	22 E abbiam fatto descrivere quello che essi han detto nell'adunanza del popolo in questi termini: Numenio di Antioco e Antipatro figliuolo di Giasone ambasciadori dei Giudei, sono venuti a noi per rinnovare l'antica nostra amicizia.
23 And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest.	23 E il popolo ha creduto ben fatto di accogliere quegli uomini orrevolmente, e di far registro delle loro parole nè libri originali del popolo per memoria del popolo degli Sparziati: e una copia di questa scrittura l'abbiam mandata a Simone sommo Sacerdote.
24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them.	24 Indi Simone mandò a Roma Numenio con un brocchiere di oro, che pesava mille mine per confermare l'alleanza con essi.
25 Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons?	25 E il popolo Romano avendo udite tali cose disse: Quali ringraziamenti renderem noi a Simone e ai suoi figliuoli?
26 For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty.	26 Perocchè egli rimesse in piedi i suoi fratelli, e sterminò i nemici d'Israele dal suo paese. E decretarono a lui la libertà. E questo fu scritto in tavole di bronzo poste tra i monumenti nel monte di Sion.
27 So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest,	27 E lo scritto era di tal tenore: A diciotto del mese di Elul, l'anno cento settantadue, il terzo anno di Simone sommo Sacerdote, in Asaramel.
28 At Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us.	28 Nella grande adunanza de' sacerdoti e del popolo e dei capi della nazione e dei seniori del paese ella è cosa notoria, come molte guerre sono state nel nostro paese.
29 Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:	29 E Simone figliuolo di Mathathia della stirpe di Jarib e i suoi fratelli si esposero ai pericoli, opponendosi ai nemici della loro nazione in difesa del toro santuario e della legge, ed hanno fatto grand'onore alla loro nazione.
30 (For after that Jonathan, having gathered his nation together, and been their high priest, was added to his people,	30 E come Gionata rimesse insieme la sua nazione, e fu sommo Sacerdote di essa, e andò a riunirsi alla sua gente.
31 Their enemies prepared to invade their country, that they might destroy it, and lay hands on the sanctuary:	31 E i loro nemici tentarono di opprimere e distruggere il loro paese, e mettere le mani sopra il loro santuario.
32 At which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages,	32 E allora si oppose lara Simone, e combatte pel suo popolo, e spese molto denaro armando i soldati di sua nazione, e dando loro la paga.
33 And fortified the cities of Judea, together with Bethsura, that lieth upon the borders of Judea, where the armour of the enemies had been before; but he set a garrison of Jews there:	33 E l'ortificò le città della Giudea e Bethsura ai confini della Giudea, che prima era occupata dall'armi nemiche: ed egli vi pose presidio di Giudei.
34 Moreover he fortified Joppa, which lieth upon the sea, and Gazera, that bordereth upon Azotus, where the enemies had dwelt before: but he placed Jews there, and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof.)	34 E fortificò Joppe sulla spiaggia del mare e Gazara, che è ai confini di Azoto, dove prima erano postati i nemici, ed egli vi pose de' Giudei con tutto quello che potea servir loro per difendersi.
35 The people therefore sang the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people.	35 E il popolo veggendo le cose operate da Simone, e il bene, ch'ei procurava di fare alla sua gente, lo dichiarò suo condottiere e principe de' sacerdoti per aver fatto tutto questo in pro del suo popolo, e per la sua giustizia e per la fedeltà serbala alla sua gente, e per aver cercate tutte le vie d'ingrandire il suo popolo.
36 For in his time things prospered in his hands, so that the heathen were taken out of their country, and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had made themselves a tower, out of which they issued, and polluted all about the sanctuary, and did much hurt in the holy place:	36 E nel tempo del suo governo tale si é goduta prosperità per mezzo di lui, che sono state dal loro paese discacciate le genti, e quelli che erano nella città di David, e nella cittadella di Gerusalemme, donde uscivano a profanare tutti i luoghi attorno al santuario, e facevano oltraggi grandi alla santità di esso.
37 But he placed Jews therein. and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem.	37 Ed egli vi pose de' Giudei a difesa del paese e della città, e rialzo le mura di Gerusalemme.
38 King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things,	38 E il re Demetrio lo confermò nel sommo sacerdozio.
39 And made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour.	39 E dipoi la fece suo amico, e gli fece grandissimi onori.
40 For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably;	40 Perocchè egli sapevo come i Giudei erano stati dichiarati amici e confederali e fratelli da' Romani, e come questi aveano accolto onorevolmente gli ambasciadori di Simone:
41 Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet;	41 E come i Giudei e i loro sacerdoti di comun consenso lo avean creato loro condottiere, e sommo sacerdote in perpetuo sino alla venuta del profeta fedele:
42 Moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary;	42 E che egli sia loro capo, e abbia cura delle cose sante, e crei deputati per le opere pubbliche, e sopra il paese e sopra le cose della guerra, e sopra i presidj:
43 Beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold:	43 E amministrì le cose del santuario, e sia egli obbedito da tutti, e che tutti gli atti nel paese si scrivano sotto il suo nome, ed egli abbia l'uso della porpora, e porti la fibbia d'oro.
44 Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold;	44 E che a nissuno del popolo, ne dei sacerdoti sia permesso di alterare alcuno di questi ordini, o contradire a quello ch' egli avrà stabilito, o convocar l'adunanze nel paese senza di lui, o vestir porpora o portare la fibbia d'oro.
45 And whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished.	45 E che chiunque farà casa contro questi ordini, ad alcuno ne violerà, sarà in colpa.
46 Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said.	46 E piacque a tutto il popolo di dare tal potestà a Simone, e che tutto questo si eseguisse.
47 Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all.	47 E Simone accettò con gradimento le funzioni del sommo Sacerdozio, e di essere capo e principe della nazione Giudea e de' sacerdoti, e di avere autorità sopra tutte le cose.
48 So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place;	48 E quelli ordinarono, che questo decretò fosse scritto in tavole di bronzo, le quali si mettessero nel portico del tempio in luogo distinto:
49 Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them.	49 E copia di esso si metta nell'erario del tempio tralle mani di Simone e dei suoi figliuoli.
