1 Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media to get him help to fight against Tryphone.	1 En l’an 172, le roi Démétrius rassembla ses forces et partit en Médie pour y recruter des troupes auxiliaires, car il voulait combattre Tryphon.
2 But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive:	2 Arsace, roi de Perse et de Médie, apprit que Démétrius était entré sur son territoire, et il envoya un de ses généraux pour le prendre vivant.
3 Who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward.	3 Celui-ci se mit en route, écrasa la colonne de Démétrius et mit la main sur lui; il le conduisit à Arsace qui le fit jeter en prison.
4 As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well.	4 Le pays fut ainsi en paix durant tout le règne de Simon. Il rechercha le bien de son peuple et durant tous ses jours, le peuple apprécia son autorité et sa renommée.
5 And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppa for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea,	5 Il ajouta à ses autres titres de gloire la prise de Joppé; il en fit un port qui lui ouvrait la route des îles de la mer.
6 And enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country,	6 Il recula les frontières de sa nation et devint le maître du pays.
7 And gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazera, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleaness, neither was there any that resisted him.	7 Il fit revenir un grand nombre de prisonniers, il s’empara de Gazer, de Beth-Sour et de la Citadelle; il en retira toutes les impuretés et plus personne ne put lui résister.
8 Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit.	8 Chacun travaillait ses champs en paix, le sol donnait ses produits et les arbres des champs leurs fruits.
9 The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel.	9 Assis sur les places publiques, les vieillards parlaient de la prospérité du pays et les jeunes gens aimaient à revêtir des habits de guerre.
10 He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world.	10 Simon procura aux villes des vivres et tout ce qui était nécessaire à leur défense; sa renommée atteignit jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
11 He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy:	11 Il rendit la paix au pays et Israël connut du bon temps.
12 For every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them:	12 Chacun put s’asseoir sous sa vigne ou son figuier, nul ne les inquiétait.
13 Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days.	13 On avait cessé de les attaquer dans leur pays, les rois en ce temps-là avaient été vaincus.
14 Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away.	14 Simon fut le soutien des humbles de son peuple; il était zélé pour la Loi, il fit disparaître les renégats comme les méchants.
15 He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied vessels of the temple.	15 Il redonna au Temple sa gloire et multiplia les objets sacrés.
16 Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry.	16 Lorsqu’on apprit à Rome et à Sparte la mort de Jonathan, tous en furent profondément peinés;
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein:	17 mais lorsqu’ils surent que son frère Simon était devenu grand prêtre à sa place, qu’il était maître de tout le pays et de toutes les villes qui s’y trouvent,
18 They wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren:	18 ils lui écrivirent sur des tables de bronze pour renouveler avec lui l’alliance et l’amitié qu’ils avaient faites avec Judas et Jonathan, ses frères.
19 Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem.	19 On lut ce document en présence de toute l’assemblée à Jérusalem, et voici la copie de la lettre que les Spartiates envoyèrent:
20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:	20 “Les chefs des Spartiates et la cité saluent le grand prêtre Simon, les anciens, les prêtres, et le reste du peuple des Juifs.
21 The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming,	21 Les ambassadeurs que vous avez envoyés à notre peuple nous ont parlé de votre gloire et votre prospérité. Nous avons été heureux de leur visite,
22 And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews' ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.	22 et voici comment nous avons enregistré leur déclaration sur les comptes-rendus de notre peuple: Nouménios fils d’Antiocos, et Antipater fils de Jason, ambassadeurs des Juifs, sont venus chez nous pour renouveler l’amitié avec nous.
23 And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest.	23 Le peuple s’est fait un plaisir de recevoir ces hommes avec honneur et de déposer la copie de leur discours dans les archives publiques, pour que le peuple de Sparte en garde la mémoire; nous en avons fait faire cette copie pour le grand prêtre Simon.”
24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them.	24 Simon envoya alors à Rome Nouménios avec un grand bouclier d’or pesant plus de 500 kilos, pour confirmer l’alliance avec les Romains.
25 Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons?	25 En apprenant tout cela, le peuple dit: “Comment pourrons-nous témoigner notre reconnaissance à Simon et à ses fils?
26 For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty.	26 Lui, ses frères, et la maison de son père ont été notre appui: ils ont combattu et repoussé les ennemis d’Israël, ils lui ont assuré la liberté.” Ils gravèrent donc une inscription sur des tablettes de bronze qu’on fixa sur une colonne sur le mont Sion.
27 So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest,	27 En voici la copie: “Le 18 du mois d’Éloul, en l’an 172, en la troisième année du grand prêtre Simon, dans la cour intérieure du Temple,
28 At Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us.	28 les prêtres et le peuple, les princes de la nation et les anciens du pays ont tenu une grande assemblée. Ils ont publié ce décret:
29 Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:	29 Simon fils de Mattathias, descendant des fils de Yoarib, et ses frères, se sont exposés au danger dans les combats incessants qui ont eu lieu dans le pays. Ils ont tenu tête aux ennemis de la nation pour que le Temple et la Loi restent debout, ils ont ainsi couvert de gloire leur nation.
30 (For after that Jonathan, having gathered his nation together, and been their high priest, was added to his people,	30 Jonathan a rassemblé la nation et est devenu son grand prêtre, puis il est allé rejoindre ses pères.
31 Their enemies prepared to invade their country, that they might destroy it, and lay hands on the sanctuary:	31 Les ennemis des Juifs ont voulu alors envahir leur pays pour ravager leur territoire et mettre la main sur leur Lieu Saint,
32 At which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages,	32 mais Simon s’est levé et a combattu pour sa nation. Il a beaucoup dépensé de ses propres richesses pour fournir des armes aux combattants de sa nation et leur verser un salaire.
33 And fortified the cities of Judea, together with Bethsura, that lieth upon the borders of Judea, where the armour of the enemies had been before; but he set a garrison of Jews there:	33 Il a fortifié les villes de Juda, ainsi que Beth-Sour aux limites de la Judée: il a placé une garnison juive dans cette ville qui était occupée jusqu’alors par les ennemis.
34 Moreover he fortified Joppa, which lieth upon the sea, and Gazera, that bordereth upon Azotus, where the enemies had dwelt before: but he placed Jews there, and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof.)	34 Il a fortifié Joppé sur la mer, et Gazer aux frontières d’Azotos; autrefois les ennemis l’habitaient, mais il y a placé des colons juifs et entreposé tout ce qui était nécessaire pour leur entretien.
35 The people therefore sang the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people.	35 Voyant la fidélité de Simon et la gloire qu’il voulait donner à sa nation, le peuple l’a fait gouverneur et grand prêtre, reconnaissant ainsi tous les services qu’il avait rendus, la justice et la fidélité qu’il avait montrées à la nation, parce que, en toute occasion, il avait cherché à élever son peuple.
36 For in his time things prospered in his hands, so that the heathen were taken out of their country, and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had made themselves a tower, out of which they issued, and polluted all about the sanctuary, and did much hurt in the holy place:	36 Durant ses jours, et grâce à lui, les nations ont été chassées du pays qu’elles occupaient, et de même ceux qui s’étaient installés dans la Cité de David à Jérusalem, d’où ils sortaient pour souiller les alentours du Temple et profaner sa sainteté de façon honteuse.
37 But he placed Jews therein. and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem.	37 Il y a placé des soldats juifs et l’a fortifiée pour assurer la défense du pays et de la ville; il a aussi surélevé les remparts de Jérusalem.
38 King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things,	38 À la suite de cela, le roi Démétrius lui a confié la charge de grand prêtre,
39 And made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour.	39 l’a déclaré son ami et lui a accordé les plus grands honneurs:
40 For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably;	40 il avait appris que les Romains appelaient les Juifs leurs amis, leurs alliés et leurs frères, et qu’ils avaient reçu les envoyés de Simon avec honneur.”
41 Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet;	41 “Les Juifs et les prêtres ont donc jugé bon que Simon soit prince et grand prêtre pour toujours, jusqu’au jour où paraîtra un prophète digne de foi. Il commandera leurs armées,
42 Moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary;	42 il aura la charge des Lieux-Saints, il établira les responsables des services publics et de l’administration du pays. Il veillera sur les armements et la défense des forteresses.
43 Beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold:	43 Il aura la charge du peuple saint, il sera obéi de tous. Tous les actes publics dans le pays seront écrits en son nom, et lui sera revêtu de pourpre et d’or.
44 Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold;	44 Parmi le peuple, comme parmi les prêtres, personne ne pourra rejeter aucun de ces points, contredire aucun de ses ordres ou convoquer sans son autorisation une assemblée dans le pays, porter une robe de pourpre ou une agrafe d’or.
45 And whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished.	45 Quiconque agira contrairement à ce décret ou en violera un seul article sera châtié.
46 Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said.	46 Le peuple a jugé bon que Simon agisse selon ce décret
47 Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all.	47 et Simon a accepté. Il a bien voulu remplir la charge de grand prêtre, de chef des armées et de gouverneur des Juifs et des prêtres, enfin, d’exercer le commandement suprême.”
48 So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place;	48 On décida de graver ce document sur des tablettes de bronze et de les placer dans la galerie du Temple, en un lieu bien visible;
49 Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them.	49 on en déposa une copie dans la chambre du trésor pour l’usage de Simon et de ses fils.
