1 Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media to get him help to fight against Tryphone.	1 El año ciento setenta y dos el rey Demetrio reunió sus tropas y se dirigió a Media, a fin de obtener ayuda para combatir a Trifón.
2 But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive:	2 Arsaces, rey de Persia y Media, al saber que Demetrio había penetrado en su territorio, envió a uno de sus generales para capturarlo vivo.
3 Who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward.	3 Este partió y derrotó al ejército de Demetrio; lo tomó prisionero y lo llevó ante Arsaces, el cual lo hizo encarcelar.
4 As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well.	4 Mientras vivió Simón, el país de Judá gozó de paz. El procuró el bienestar de la nación; su autoridad y su magnificencia fueron siempre aceptadas por todos.
5 And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppa for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea,	5 Añadió a sus muchas acciones gloriosas, la conquista de Jope como puerto, y abrió una salida hacia las islas del mar.
6 And enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country,	6 Extendió las fronteras de su nación y tuvo el país en sus manos.
7 And gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazera, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleaness, neither was there any that resisted him.	7 Repartió numerosos cautivos; conquistó Gázara, Betsur y la Ciudadela, y las purificó de toda impureza, sin encontrar ninguna resistencia.
8 Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit.	8 Se cultivaba la tierra en paz, el suelo producía sus cosechas y los árboles de la llanura sus frutos.
9 The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel.	9 Los ancianos se sentaban en las plazas, todos comentaban el bienestar reinante, y los jóvenes iban vestidos con vistosos uniformes militares.
10 He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world.	10 Abasteció de víveres a las ciudades y las dotó de medios para su defensa, de manera que el renombre de su gloria llegó hasta los confines de la tierra.
11 He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy:	11 Restableció la paz en su nación, con gran regocijo de Israel:
12 For every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them:	12 cada uno se sentó bajo su parra y su higuera sin que nadie los inquietara.
13 Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days.	13 Los enemigos desaparecieron del país y en aquellos días fueron destrozados los reyes.
14 Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away.	14 Amparó a los humildes de su pueblo, observó fielmente la Ley y eliminó a los impíos y a los malvados.
15 He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied vessels of the temple.	15 Dio nuevo esplendor al Templo y lo enriqueció con muchos vasos sagrados.
16 Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry.	16 Cuando se supo en Roma y en Esparta que Jonatán había muerto, lo sintieron mucho.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein:	17 Pero al enterarse que su hermano Simón lo había sucedido como Sumo Sacerdote y había asumido el gobierno del país y de sus ciudades,
18 They wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren:	18 le escribieron en planchas de bronce para renovar con él el pacto de amistad que habían establecido con sus hermanos Judas y Jonatán.
19 Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem.	19 El texto fue leído en Jerusalén delante de la asamblea.
20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:	20 Esta es la copia de la carta enviada para los espartanos: «Los magistrados y la ciudad de los espartanos saludan al Sumo Sacerdote Simón, a los ancianos, a los sacerdotes y al resto del Pueblo judío, nuestros hermanos.
21 The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming,	21 Los embajadores enviados a nuestro pueblo nos han informado acerca de la gloria y el prestigio de ustedes. Por eso nos hemos alegrado de su venida.
22 And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews' ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.	22 Hemos registrado sus declaraciones en las actas del pueblo en los siguientes términos: Numenio, hijo de Antíoco, y Antípatros, hijo de Jasón, embajadores de los judíos, se han presentado para renovar su amistad con nosotros.
23 And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest.	23 Fue del agrado del pueblo recibirlos con todos los honores y depositar la copia de sus discursos en los archivos públicos, para que sirva de recuerdo al pueblo espartano. Se ha sacado una copia de esto para el Sumo Sacerdote Simón».
24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them.	24 Después, Simón envió a Roma a Numenio con un gran escudo de oro que pesaba mil minas, para confirmar el pacto con ellos.
25 Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons?	25 Al enterarse de estas cosas, el pueblo dijo: «¿Cómo expresaremos nuestro reconocimiento a Simón y a sus hijos?
26 For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty.	26 Porque tanto él como sus hermanos y toda la familia de su padre han combatido con firmeza y expulsado a los enemigos de Israel, y le han asegurado la libertad». Entonces hicieron grabar una inscripción en planchas de bronce y las fijaron sobre unas columnas en el monte Sión.
27 So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest,	27 Esta es la copia de la inscripción: «El día dieciocho del mes de Elul del año ciento setenta y dos –el tercero de Simón, Sumo Sacerdote insigne– en Asaramel,
28 At Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us.	28 en la gran asamblea de los sacerdotes, del pueblo, de los príncipes de la nación y de los ancianos del país, se nos ha notificado lo siguiente:
29 Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:	29 En los incesantes combates librados en nuestro país, Simón, hijo de Matatías, descendiente de la familia de Joarib, y sus hermanos, afrontaron el peligro y se opusieron a los enemigos de su patria a fin de preservar su Santuario y su Ley: así cubrieron de gloria su nación.
30 (For after that Jonathan, having gathered his nation together, and been their high priest, was added to his people,	30 Jonatán unificó a su nación y llegó a ser Sumo Sacerdote, hasta que fue a reunirse con sus padres.
31 Their enemies prepared to invade their country, that they might destroy it, and lay hands on the sanctuary:	31 Cuando los enemigos quisieron invadir el país para devastarlo y levantar su mano contra el Santuario,
32 At which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages,	32 surgió Simón y combatió por su pueblo. El invirtió gran parte de su fortuna en equipar a los soldados de su nación y pagarles el sueldo;
33 And fortified the cities of Judea, together with Bethsura, that lieth upon the borders of Judea, where the armour of the enemies had been before; but he set a garrison of Jews there:	33 fortificó las ciudades de Judea y la ciudad fronteriza de Betsur, donde antes estaba el arsenal enemigo, y estableció allí una guarnición judía.
34 Moreover he fortified Joppa, which lieth upon the sea, and Gazera, that bordereth upon Azotus, where the enemies had dwelt before: but he placed Jews there, and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof.)	34 También fortificó a Jope, en la orilla del mar, y al Gázara en la frontera de Azoto, donde antes habitaban los enemigos, y estableció en ella una población judía, proveyéndola de todo lo necesario para su mantenimiento.
35 The people therefore sang the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people.	35 El pueblo, al ver la lealtad de Simón y cómo se interesaba por la gloria de su nación, lo constituyó su jefe y Sumo Sacerdote por todos los servicios que había prestado, por la justicia y la fidelidad que manifestó hacia su nación y por haber buscado de todas las formas posibles la exaltación de su pueblo.
36 For in his time things prospered in his hands, so that the heathen were taken out of their country, and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had made themselves a tower, out of which they issued, and polluted all about the sanctuary, and did much hurt in the holy place:	36 En su tiempo y bajo su conducción, se logró expulsar a los extranjeros del país, en especial, a los que se encontraban en la Ciudad de David, en Jerusalén. Allí habían construido una Ciudadela, de la que salían para profanar los alrededores del Santuario causando graves ultrajes a su santidad.
37 But he placed Jews therein. and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem.	37 Simón puso en ella soldados judíos, la fortificó para seguridad del país y de la ciudad, y elevó los muros de Jerusalén.
38 King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things,	38 Por los motivos, el rey Demetrio lo confirmó en el sumo sacerdocio
39 And made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour.	39 y lo hizo uno de sus Amigos, colmándolo de grandes honores.
40 For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably;	40 El se había enterado, en efecto, que los romanos llamaban a los judíos amigos, aliados y hermanos, y que habían recibido con todos los honores a los embajadores de Simón.
41 Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet;	41 Supo también que los judíos y los sacerdotes habían decidido que Simón fuera su jefe y Sumo Sacerdote vitalicio, hasta que surgiera un profeta digno de fe;
42 Moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary;	42 que fuera asimismo su comandante, que se ocupara del lugar santo y designara por sí mismo a los encargados de los trabajos, de la administración del país, de los asuntos militares y de las plazas fuertes;
43 Beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold:	43 que cuidara de las cosas santas y fuera obedecido por todos; que todos los documentos del país se redactaran en su nombre y que se vistiera de púrpura y llevara insignias de oro.
44 Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold;	44 A nadie del pueblo ni de los sacerdotes le estará permitido violar estas disposiciones, contradecir sus órdenes, celebrar asambleas en el país sin su autorización, vestir de púrpura o llevar un prendedor de oro.
45 And whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished.	45 Todo el que obre contrariamente a estas decisiones, o viole alguna de ellas, será pasible de sanción.
46 Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said.	46 El pueblo entero estuvo de acuerdo en conceder a Simón el derecho de obrar conforme a estas disposiciones.
47 Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all.	47 Simón aceptó, y consintió en ejercer el sumo sacerdocio, en ser comandante y etnarca del Pueblo judío y de los sacerdotes, y en ponerse al frente de ellos».
48 So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place;	48 Se decidió que este documento fuera grabado en planchas de bronce, que estas fueran colocadas cerca del Santuario, en un lugar visible,
49 Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them.	49 y que se guardaran copias en el Tesoro del Templo a disposición de Simón y de sus hijos.
