1 Maccabees 14

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media to get him help to fight against Tryphone.	1 En l'année 172, le roi Démétrius réunit son armée et s'en alla en Médie se procurer dessecours afin de combattre Tryphon.
2 But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive:	2 Arsace, roi de Perse et de Médie, ayant appris que Démétrius était rentré sur son territoire,envoya un de ses généraux le capturer vivant.
3 Who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward.	3 Celui-ci partit et défit l'armée de Démétrius, dont il se saisit; il l'amena à Arsace, qui le miten prison.
4 As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well.	4 Le pays de Juda fut en repos durant tous les jours du règne de Simon. Il chercha le bien desa nation et son autorité fut agréée des siens, comme sa magnificence, durant toute sa vie.
5 And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppa for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea,	5 En plus de ses titres de gloire, il prit Joppé, en fit son port, et s'ouvrit un accès aux îles de lamer.
6 And enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country,	6 Il recula les frontières de sa nation, tout en gardant le pays en main,
7 And gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazera, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleaness, neither was there any that resisted him.	7 et regroupa la foule des captifs. Il maîtrisa Gazara, Bethsour et la Citadelle, il en extirpa lesimpuretés et nul ne se trouva pour lui résister.
8 Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit.	8 Les gens cultivaient leur terre en paix, la terre donnait ses produits et les arbres de la plaineleurs fruits.
9 The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel.	9 Les vieillards sur les places étaient assis, tous s'entretenaient de la prospérité, les jeunesrevêtaient de magnifiques armures.
10 He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world.	10 Aux villes il fournit des vivres, il les munit de fortifications, si bien que sa gloire parvint aubout du monde.
11 He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy:	11 Il fit la paix dans le pays et Israël éprouva une grande allégresse.
12 For every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them:	12 Chacun s'assit sous sa vigne et son figuier et il n'y avait personne pour l'inquiéter.
13 Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days.	13 Quiconque le combattait dans le pays disparut et, en ces jours-là, les rois furent écrasés.
14 Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away.	14 Il affermit tous les humbles de son peuple et supprima tout impie et tout méchant. Ilobserva la Loi,
15 He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied vessels of the temple.	15 couvrit de gloire le sanctuaire et l'enrichit de vases nombreux.
16 Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry.	16 Lorsqu'on apprit à Rome, et jusqu'à Sparte, que Jonathan était mort, on en futprofondément affligé.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein:	17 Mais lorsqu'on entendit que Simon, son frère, lui avait succédé comme grand prêtre et qu'ilétait maître du pays et des villes qui s'y trouvaient,
18 They wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren:	18 ils lui écrivirent sur des tablettes de bronze pour renouveler avec lui l'amitié et l'alliancequ'ils avaient conclues avec Judas et Jonathan ses frères.
19 Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem.	19 Lecture en fut donnée devant l'assemblée à Jérusalem.
20 And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:	20 Voici la copie des lettres qu'envoyèrent les Spartiates: "Les magistrats et la ville desSpartiates à Simon, grand prêtre, aux anciens, aux prêtres et au reste du peuple des Juifs, salut.
21 The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming,	21 Les ambassadeurs que vous avez envoyés à notre peuple nous ont informés de votre gloireet de votre bonheur, nous avons été enchantés de leur venue.
22 And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews' ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.	22 Nous avons enregistré leurs déclarations parmi les décisions populaires en ces termes:Nouménios, fils d'Antiochos, et Antipater, fils de Jason, ambassadeurs des Juifs, sont venus chez nous pourrenouer amitié avec nous.
23 And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest.	23 Et il a plu au peuple de recevoir ces personnages avec honneur et de déposer la copie deleurs discours aux archives publiques, pour que le peuple de Sparte en garde le souvenir. Il en a été exécuté parailleurs une copie pour Simon le grand prêtre."
24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them.	24 Après cela, Simon envoya Nouménios à Rome avec un grand bouclier d'or du poids demille mines, pour confirmer l'alliance avec eux.
25 Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons?	25 En apprenant ces faits, on dit parmi le peuple: "Quel témoignage de reconnaissancedonnerons-nous à Simon et à ses fils?
26 For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty.	26 Car il s'est montré ferme, lui aussi bien que ses frères et la maison de son père; il a, en lescombattant, repoussé les ennemis d'Israël loin de lui, et établi sa liberté." Aussi gravèrent-ils un texte sur destables de bronze et le placèrent-ils sur des stèles au mont Sion.
27 So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest,	27 Voici la copie de ce texte: "Le dix-huit Elul de l'an 172 qui est la troisième année deSimon, grand prêtre éminent, en Asaramel,
28 At Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us.	28 en la grande assemblée des prêtres, du peuple, des princes de la nation et des anciens dupays, on nous a notifié ceci:
29 Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:	29 Lorsque des combats incessants eurent lieu dans la contrée, Simon, fils de Mattathias,descendant des fils de Ioarib, et ses frères se sont exposés au danger et ont tenu tête aux ennemis de leur nation,afin que leur sanctuaire demeurât debout ainsi que la Loi, et ils ont acquis à leur nation une grande gloire.
30 (For after that Jonathan, having gathered his nation together, and been their high priest, was added to his people,	30 Jonathan rassembla sa nation et devint son grand prêtre, puis il alla rejoindre son peuple.
31 Their enemies prepared to invade their country, that they might destroy it, and lay hands on the sanctuary:	31 Les ennemis des Juifs voulurent envahir leur pays pour ravager leur territoire et porter lamain sur leur sanctuaire.
32 At which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages,	32 Alors Simon se leva et combattit pour sa nation. Il dépensa beaucoup de ses propresrichesses, fournit des armes aux hommes vaillants de sa nation et leur donna une solde;
33 And fortified the cities of Judea, together with Bethsura, that lieth upon the borders of Judea, where the armour of the enemies had been before; but he set a garrison of Jews there:	33 il fortifia les villes de Judée ainsi que Bethsour, sur les limites de la Judée, où se trouvaientauparavant les armes des ennemis, et il y mit une garnison de guerriers juifs.
34 Moreover he fortified Joppa, which lieth upon the sea, and Gazera, that bordereth upon Azotus, where the enemies had dwelt before: but he placed Jews there, and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof.)	34 Il fortifia Joppé sur la mer et Gazara sur les limites d'Azôtos, habitée naguère par desennemis, où il plaça des colons juifs et entreposa tout ce qui convenait à leur entretien.
35 The people therefore sang the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people.	35 Le peuple vit la fidélité de Simon et la gloire qu'il se proposait de donner à sa nation; ils leconstituèrent leur higoumène et leur grand prêtre à cause de tous les services qu'il avait rendus, à cause de lajustice et de la fidélité qu'il garda envers sa nation et parce qu'il avait travaillé de toutes manières à l'élévation deson peuple.
36 For in his time things prospered in his hands, so that the heathen were taken out of their country, and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had made themselves a tower, out of which they issued, and polluted all about the sanctuary, and did much hurt in the holy place:	36 En ces jours, il lui fut donné d'extirper de son pays les nations et ceux qui étaient dans laCité de David à Jérusalem, dont ils s'étaient fait une citadelle d'où ils opéraient des sorties, souillant les alentoursdu sanctuaire et portant une atteinte grave à sa sainteté.
37 But he placed Jews therein. and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem.	37 Il y établit des guerriers juifs et la fortifia pour la sécurité du pays et de la ville, et ilexhaussa les murailles de Jérusalem.
38 King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things,	38 Le roi Démétrius lui confirma en conséquence la souveraine sacrificature,
39 And made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour.	39 il l'éleva au rang des amis et l'entoura d'un éclat considérable.
40 For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably;	40 Le roi en effet avait appris que les Romains appelaient les Juifs amis, alliés et frères, qu'ilsavaient reçu avec honneur les ambassadeurs de Simon,
41 Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet;	41 et que les Juifs et les prêtres avaient jugé bon que Simon fût higoumène et grand prêtrepour toujours jusqu'à ce que paraisse un prophète accrédité;
42 Moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary;	42 et aussi qu'il fût leur stratège et prît soin de désigner les responsables de la fabrique dusanctuaire, de l'administration du pays, des armements et des places fortes;
43 Beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold:	43 (qu'il prît soin du sanctuaire, qu'il fût obéi de tous, que tous les actes dans le pays fussentrédigés en son nom, qu'il fût revêtu de la pourpre et portât des ornements d'or.
44 Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold;	44 Il ne sera permis à personne du peuple et d'entre les prêtres de rejeter un de ces points, nide contredire les ordres qu'il donnera, ni de tenir un conciliabule dans le pays à son insu, ni de revêtir la pourpreou de porter l'agrafe d'or.
45 And whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished.	45 Quiconque agira contrairement à ces décisions ou en rejettera un point, sera passible d'unepeine.
46 Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said.	46 Le peuple trouva bon d'accorder à Simon le droit d'agir suivant ces dispositions.
47 Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all.	47 Simon accepta et il consentit à exercer le souverain sacerdoce, à être stratège et ethnarquedes Juifs et des prêtres, à être à la tête de tous.
48 So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place;	48 Ils décrétèrent que cet écrit serait gravé sur des tables de bronze qui devraient être placéesdans l'enceinte du sanctuaire en un lieu apparent,
49 Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them.	49 et que des copies en seraient déposées dans le Trésor pour être à la disposition de Simon etde ses fils."
