1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Simão foi informado de que Trifon havia organizado um poderoso exército para vir à Judéia e devastá-la.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 Vendo o povo amedrontado e espavorido, subiu a Jerusalém, convocou a população
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 e dirigiu-lhe a palavra nestes termos: Vós mesmos sabeis bem o que eu, meus irmãos e a casa de meu pai temos feito pelas leis e pelo santuário, as guerras e as dificuldades que temos conhecido.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Foi assim que meus irmãos foram mortos pela causa de Israel e que fiquei eu só.
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Deus me guarde agora de poupar minha vida, quando o inimigo nos oprime, porque não sou melhor que meus irmãos!
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 Por isso tirarei vingança de meu povo, do santuário, de vossas mulheres e filhos, uma vez que todas as nações, por seu ódio, estão coligadas para nos destruir.
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 A estas palavras, os ânimos inflamaram-se
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 e todos responderam, gritando: Tu és nosso chefe em lugar de Judas e de Jônatas, teu irmão;
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 combate por nós e nós faremos tudo o que disseres.
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Então Simão reuniu todos os que podiam lutar, apressou-se em terminar os muros de Jerusalém e fortificou o recinto.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 Enviou Jônatas, filho de Absalão, com consideráveis tropas a Jope. Jônatas expulsou seus habitantes e instalou-se em seu lugar.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 Todavia, Trifon saiu de Ptolemaida com um numeroso exército e se dirigiu à Judéia. Trouxe consigo Jônatas, prisioneiro.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simão acampou em Adida, defronte à planície.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Informado de que Simão havia ocupado o lugar de seu irmão Jônatas e se aprontava para combatê-lo, Trifon enviou-lhe mensageiros, para dizer-lhe:
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 Guardamos teu irmão por causa do dinheiro que ele deve ao tesouro real em vista das funções que exercia.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Envia, pois, agora, cem talentos e, para que, uma vez livre, não abandone nossa causa, manda também dois de seus filhos como reféns, e nós o deixaremos ir.
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simão percebeu que essas palavras eram falazes, mas mandou buscar o dinheiro e os filhos, com receio de cair na hostilidade do povo, que poderia dizer:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 Foi porque eu não mandei o dinheiro e os filhos, que o mataram.
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Remeteu, pois, o dinheiro e os filhos, mas Trifon quebrou a palavra e não libertou Jônatas.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Depois, pôs-se ele a caminho para entrar na Judéia e devastá-la, fazendo um rodeio pelo caminho que conduz a Adora, mas Simão se apresentava diante dele por toda parte aonde ele ia.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Por seu lado, os ocupantes da cidadela enviaram a Trifon mensageiro pedindo-lhe que se apressasse a ir ter com eles pelo deserto e lhes fornecesse víveres.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 Trifon aprontou sua cavalaria para partir naquela mesma noite, mas havia ali muita neve e ele não pôde encetar o caminho. Partiu, todavia, e foi à região de Galaad.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Quando chegou perto de Bascama matou Jônatas e o sepultou;
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 em seguida, retrocedeu e voltou à sua terra.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Simão mandou recolher os restos de seu irmão Jônatas e os sepultou em Modin, cidade de seus pais.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 E todo o Israel chorou abundantemente e conservou o luto durante muitos dias.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 Sobre o túmulo de seu pai e de seus irmãos, Simão edificou um monumento grandioso com pedras polidas, na frente e por trás.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 Ergueu ali sete pirâmides uma diante da outra, para seu pai, sua mãe e seus quatro irmãos.
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 Colocou nelas ornamentos e cercou-as com altas colunas, sobre as quais, para eterna lembrança, colocou muitas armas e, junto a estas, navios esculpidos, que podiam ser vistos por todos os que se achavam no mar.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Tal foi a sepultura que ele construiu em Modin e que existe ainda hoje.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Trifon, que servia o jovem rei Antíoco, com duplicidade, mandou assassiná-lo,
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 reinou em seu lugar e usurpou o diadema da Ásia. Ele causou muito mal ao país.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Simão reergueu as praças fortes da Judéia, muniu-as com torres elevadas, com grandes muros, portas, ferrolhos, e as abarrotou de víveres.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Escolheu mensageiros e enviou-os ao rei Demétrio, pedindo-lhe que restabelecesse o país porque Trifon o havia submetido inteiramente à pilhagem.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 O rei Demétrio mandou-lhe sua resposta e escreveu-lhe nestes termos:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 O rei Demétrio a Simão, sumo sacerdote e amigo dos reis, aos anciãos e ao povo judeu, saúde!
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Recebemos a coroa de ouro e a palma que nos enviastes e estamos dispostos a concluir convosco uma paz sólida, bem como a escrever aos funcionários que vos dispensem dos impostos.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Tudo o que foi decidido em vosso favor está confirmado, e as fortalezas que construístes são vossas.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Nós vos perdoamos todos os erros e as faltas cometidas até o dia de hoje. Renunciamos à coroa que nos devíeis e, se existem ainda em Jerusalém outras dívidas a pagar, não se paguem mais.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 Finalmente, se existem entre vós alguns que sejam aptos a se alistarem em nossa guarda, que eles o sejam e que a paz reine entre nós.
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 Foi no ano cento e setenta que o jugo dos gentios foi afastado de Israel,
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 e que o povo começou a datar os atos e os contratos do primeiro ano de Simão, sumo sacerdote, chefe do exército e governador dos judeus.
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 Nessa época, Simão veio acampar diante de Gazara, a qual cercou. Construiu uma máquina, levou-a contra a cidade, atacou uma torre e apoderou-se dela.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Da máquina os soldados lançaram-se na cidade, causando ali uma grande confusão,
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 de modo que os habitantes, com suas mulheres e seus filhos, apareceram sobre os muros, rasgaram suas vestes e pediram com altos brados a Simão que os poupasse.
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 Não nos trates conforme nossas maldades, diziam eles, mas segundo a tua misericórdia.
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simão perdoou-os e não prosseguiu o combate. Não obstante expulsou-os da cidade e mandou purificar todas as habitações onde se achavam os ídolos; em seguida, fez sua entrada ao som de hinos e de cânticos de louvor.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Fez desaparecer dali toda impureza e trouxe de volta os habitantes fiéis à lei; fortificou-a e construiu para si mesmo uma morada.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Os ocupantes da cidadela de Jerusalém que não podiam sair para ir à cidade comprar e vender, achavam-se numa grande miséria e um bom número deles morreu de fome.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Suplicaram a Simão para que ele lhes estendesse a mão. Ele lhes deu a mão, mas os expulsou de lá e purificou a cidadela de todas as suas contaminações.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 E entrou nela no dia vinte e três do segundo mês, no ano cento e setenta e um, com cânticos e palmas, harpas, címbalos, liras, hinos e louvores, porque um grande inimigo de Israel tinha sido aniquilado.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Ordenou também que esse dia fosse celebrado a cada ano com regozijo.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Fortificou a montanha do templo do lado da cidadela e habitou ali com os seus.
	54 Em seguida, verificando que seu filho João se havia tornado um homem, confiou-lhe o comando de todas as tropas e este residiu em Gazara.
