1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Simon apprit que Tryphon avait réuni une grande armée pour envahir le pays de Juda et le dévaster.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 Comme il voyait que le peuple avait peur, que c’était la panique, il monta à Jérusalem et réunit le peuple.
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 Il l’encouragea par ces mots: “Vous savez tout ce que mes frères, moi-même et toute la maison de mon père, nous avons fait pour nos lois et notre religion. Vous savez les combats et les épreuves que nous avons connus.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Tous mes frères y ont laissé la vie pour Israël et je reste seul;
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 mais que Dieu me garde de me mettre à l’abri en un temps d’épreuves, car ma vie ne vaut pas plus que celle de mes frères.
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 Puisque toutes les nations qui nous haïssent se sont réunies pour nous détruire, je ferai justice à mon peuple, au Temple, à nos femmes et à nos enfants.”
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 En entendant ces paroles, l’esprit du peuple se réveilla;
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 ils répondirent par de grandes acclamations: “Tu seras notre chef à la place de Judas et de ton frère Jonathan!
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 Mène-nous au combat et nous ferons tout ce que tu nous diras!”
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Alors Simon rassembla tous les hommes de guerre. Rapidement il termina les remparts de Jérusalem et fortifia tout le tour de la ville.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 Puis il envoya à Joppé Jonathan fils d’Absalom avec une puissante armée; celui-ci en chassa tous les habitants et s’installa dans la ville.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 Tryphon quitta Ptolémaïs avec une puissante armée pour envahir le pays de Juda; il emmenait avec lui Jonathan prisonnier.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simon, de son côté, installa son camp à Adida, en face de la plaine.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Lorsque Tryphon apprit que Simon avait pris le commandement à la place de son frère Jonathan et qu’il était prêt à le combattre, il lui envoya des messagers:
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 “Nous retenons ton frère Jonathan prisonnier, dirent-ils, à cause de l’argent qu’il doit au trésor royal comme haut-fonctionnaire.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Envoie donc 100 talents d’argent et deux de ses fils comme otages pour que, une fois libre, il ne nous échappe pas; alors nous lui rendrons la liberté.”
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simon voyait bien que leurs paroles n’étaient pas sincères; il envoya cependant l’argent et les deux jeunes enfants pour ne pas attirer sur lui la colère du peuple, car on aurait pu dire ensuite:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 “C’est parce qu’il n’a pas envoyé l’argent et les enfants que Jonathan est mort.”
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Il envoya donc les enfants et les 100 talents d’argent, mais Tryphon ne tint pas sa promesse et il ne relâcha pas Jonathan.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Tryphon s’avança alors pour envahir le pays et le ravager; il fit un détour, prenant le chemin d’Adora, mais Simon et son armée lui faisaient obstacle partout où il allait.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Les hommes de la Citadelle envoyèrent des messagers à Tryphon pour le supplier de venir rapidement par le désert et de leur apporter des vivres.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 Tryphon disposa toute sa cavalerie pour y aller, mais cette nuit-là il y eut une forte chute de neige et la neige l’empêcha d’y aller. Il leva le camp et repartit pour Galaad.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Avant d’arriver à Baskama, il fit tuer Jonathan qui fut enterré en cet endroit.
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 Puis Tryphon s’en retourna pour regagner son pays.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Simon envoya prendre les ossements de son frère Jonathan et les ensevelit à Modine dans la ville de ses pères.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 Tout Israël fit sur lui un grand deuil et on le pleura durant de nombreux jours.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 Simon fit construire un monument sur la tombe de son père et de ses frères; il était fait de pierres polies par devant et par derrière, et suffisamment haut pour être vu de loin.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 Il fit dresser sept pyramides qui se faisaient face, pour son père, sa mère et ses quatre frères,
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 afin de garder à jamais leur souvenir. Il fit garnir ces pyramides d’un cercle de hautes colonnes surmontées d’armures, et à côté des armures il fit sculpter des navires que pourraient apprécier tous ceux qui naviguent sur la mer.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Tel est jusqu’à ce jour le monument que Simon fit construire à Modine.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Tryphon menait un double jeu avec le jeune roi Antiocus: il le tua
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 et régna à sa place. Il prit la couronne des rois d’Asie et fit beaucoup de tort au pays.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Simon reconstruisit les forteresses de Judée, il les garnit de hautes tours, de remparts élevés, de portes et de verrous, et il y mit de la nourriture en réserve.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Par ailleurs, Simon choisit des hommes qu’il envoya au roi Démétrius pour qu’il accorde des remises d’impôts au pays, car Tryphon ne faisait que brigandage sur brigandage.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 Le roi Démétrius répondit à sa demande par cette lettre:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 “Le roi Démétrius salue Simon, grand prêtre et ami des rois, les anciens et la nation des Juifs!
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Nous avons reçu la couronne d’or et la palme que vous nous avez envoyées, nous sommes prêts à faire avec vous une paix totale et à écrire aux percepteurs royaux pour qu’ils vous fassent différentes remises.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Tous nos engagements envers vous sont fermes, les forteresses que vous avez construites sont à vous.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Nous voulons oublier tous les manquements et les offenses commises jusqu’à ce jour ainsi que la taxe royale que vous nous deviez, et si par hasard on percevait quelque autre impôt à Jérusalem, qu’il ne soit plus perçu.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 S’il y a parmi vous des gens disposés à s’engager dans notre garde personnelle, qu’il s’y engage et que la paix règne entre nous.”
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 C’est ainsi que le joug des nations qui pesait sur Israël fut enlevé en l’an 170.
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 Le peuple d’Israël commença à dater ainsi ses actes et ses contrats: “En la première année de Simon, grand prêtre éminent, général et gouverneur des Juifs.”
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 En ce temps-là Simon marcha sur Gaza et la fit assiéger par ses troupes; il construisit des tours roulantes et les plaça pour attaquer la ville; à partir d’une de ces tours, il fit une brèche et s’en rendit maître.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Ceux qui étaient dans la tour roulante sautèrent dans la ville et y jetèrent la panique:
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 les habitants, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, montèrent sur les remparts, les vêtements déchirés et poussant de grands cris, demandant à Simon de leur accorder la paix.
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 Ils lui disaient: “Ne nous traite pas selon notre méchanceté mais selon ta miséricorde!”
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simon eut pitié d’eux: il arrêta le combat, mais il chassa les habitants de la ville, il purifia les maisons dans lesquelles se trouvaient des idoles et fit une entrée solennelle au chant des hymnes, des cantiques et des psaumes d’action de grâce.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Après avoir enlevé de la ville toutes les impuretés, il y plaça des hommes fidèles à la Loi, puis il la fortifia et s’y construisit une maison.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Pendant ce temps, les hommes qui occupaient la Citadelle de Jérusalem ne pouvaient plus ni sortir, ni circuler dans le pays, ni acheter, ni vendre; ils souffraient de la famine et nombreux étaient ceux qui mouraient de faim.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Ils supplièrent Simon de faire la paix avec eux. Il la leur accorda, mais il les chassa de là et purifia la Citadelle de toute impureté.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 Il y fit une entrée solennelle le vingt-troisième jour du second mois, en l’an 171, avec palmes et chants de louange, au son des cithares, des cymbales, des harpes, des hymnes et des cantiques, car un grand ennemi d’Israël était abattu.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Il ordonna de célébrer ce jour de joie chaque année.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Il fortifia la Montagne du Temple située à côté de la Citadelle et il y résida avec ses hommes.
	54 Voyant que son fils Jean était maintenant un homme, Simon lui confia le commandement de toutes les troupes et lui donna Gazer comme résidence.
