KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Simon apprit que Tryphon avait réuni une grande armée pour aller ravager le pays de Juda.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 Voyant que le peuple tremblait d'épouvante, il monta à Jérusalem, rassembla le peuple
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 qu'il exhorta en ces termes: "Vous n'êtes pas sans savoir tout ce que moi, mes frères et lamaison de mon père avons fait pour les lois et le saint lieu, ainsi que les guerres et les tribulations que nousavons vues.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 C'est bien pour cela que tous mes frères ont péri, oui, pour la cause d'Israël, et que moi jesuis resté tout seul.
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Maintenant, loin de moi d'épargner ma vie en aucun temps d'oppression! car je ne suis pasmeilleur que mes frères.
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 Mais plutôt je vengerai ma nation, le lieu saint, vos femmes et vos enfants, parce que toutesles nations se sont coalisées pour nous anéantir, poussées par la haine."
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 A ces paroles, l'esprit du peuple se ralluma;
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 ils répondirent d'une voix forte: "Tu es notre guide à la place de Judas et de Jonathan, tonfrère;
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 prends la direction de notre guerre et tout ce que tu nous diras, nous le ferons."
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Il rassembla tous les hommes aptes au combat, se hâta d'achever les murs de Jérusalem etla fortifia.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 Il envoya à Joppé Jonathan, fils d'Absalom, avec une troupe importante; celui-ci en chassales habitants et s'y établit.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 Tryphon partit de Ptolémaïs avec une nombreuse armée pour entrer dans le pays de Juda,ayant avec lui Jonathan prisonnier.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simon vint alors camper à Adida, en face de la plaine.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Tryphon, ayant appris que Simon avait remplacé son frère Jonathan et qu'il était sur lepoint d'engager la lutte avec lui-même, lui dépêcha des messagers pour lui dire:
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 "C'est au sujet de l'argent que ton frère Jonathan doit au trésor royal, à raison des fonctionsqu'il remplissait, que nous le tenons captif.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Envoie donc maintenant cent talents d'argent et deux de ses fils en otages, de peur qu'unefois relâché il ne se rebelle contre nous; alors nous le laisserons aller."
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simon, bien qu'il connût la fausseté des paroles que lui adressaient les messagers, envoyaprendre l'argent et les enfants, de peur de s'attirer une grande inimitié de la part du peuple qui aurait dit:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 "C'est parce que je n'ai pas envoyé l'argent et les enfants que Jonathan a péri."
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Il envoya donc les enfants et les cent talents, mais Tryphon le trompa en ne renvoyant pasJonathan.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Après cela, Tryphon se mit en marche pour envahir le pays et le ravager; il fit un détourpar le chemin d'Adôra: Simon et son armée lui faisaient obstacle partout où il passait.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Cependant ceux de la Citadelle dépêchaient à Tryphon des messagers le pressant de venirchez eux par le désert et de leur faire parvenir des vivres.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 Tryphon disposa alors toute sa cavalerie pour y aller, mais dans cette nuit-là il tomba uneneige si abondante qu'il ne put s'y rendre. Il partit de là et se rendit en Galaaditide.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Aux approches de Baskama, il tua Jonathan, qui fut enseveli en ce lieu.
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 Tryphon, s'en retournant, regagna son pays.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Simon envoya recueillir les ossements de Jonathan, son frère, et il l'ensevelit à Modîn, villede ses pères.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 Tout Israël mena sur lui un grand deuil et se lamenta durant de longs jours.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 Simon bâtit sur la sépulture de son père et de ses frères un monument de pierres polies tantpar derrière qu'en façade, assez haut pour être vu.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 Il érigea sept pyramides, l'une en face de l'autre, à son père, à sa mère et à ses quatre frères.
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 Il les entoura d'un ouvrage consistant en hautes colonnes surmontées de panoplies, pour unsouvenir éternel, et, à côté des panoplies, de vaisseaux sculptés pour être vus par tous ceux qui naviguent sur lamer.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Tel est le mausolée qu'il fit à Modîn, et qui existe encore aujourd'hui.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Or Tryphon, usant de perfidie avec le jeune roi Antiochus, le mit à mort.
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 Il régna à sa place, ceignit le diadème de l'Asie et fit beaucoup de mal dans le pays.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Quant à Simon, il rebâtit les forteresses de Judée, les entoura de hautes tours et de mursélevés munis de portes et de verrous et, dans ces forteresses, il entreposa des vivres.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 En outre, Simon désigna des hommes qu'il envoya au roi Démétrius pour que celui-ciaccordât rémission à la province, parce que tous les actes de Tryphon n'étaient que rapines.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 Le roi Démétrius envoya une réponse à sa demande dans une lettre libellée comme suit:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 "Le roi Démétrius à Simon, grand prêtre, ami des rois, aux anciens et à la nation des Juifs,salut.
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Nous avons agréé la couronne d'or et la palme que vous nous avez envoyées et noussommes disposés à faire avec vous une paix complète et à écrire aux fonctionnaires de vous accorder desremises.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Tout ce que nous avons statué à votre égard reste stable, et les forteresses que vous avezconstruites sont à vous.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Nous vous remettons les erreurs et les manquements commis jusqu'à ce jour ainsi que lacouronne que vous devez, et si quelque autre droit était perçu à Jérusalem, qu'il ne soit plus exigé.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 Si quelques-uns d'entre vous étaient aptes à s'enrôler dans notre garde du corps, qu'ils sefassent inscrire et que la paix soit faite entre nous."
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 L'an 170 le joug des nations fut ôté d'Israël,
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 et le peuple commença à écrire sur les actes et les contrats: "En la première année sousSimon, grand prêtre éminent, stratège et higoumène des Juifs."
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 En ces jours-là, Simon vint mettre le siège devant Gazara et l'investir avec ses troupes. Ilconstruisit une tour roulante, la fit donner contre la ville, ouvrit une brèche dans l'un des bastions et s'en empara.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Ceux qui étaient dans la tour sautèrent dans la place, ce qui y produisit une agitationconsidérable.
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 Les habitants de la ville avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants montèrent sur le rempart et,déchirant leurs vêtements, ils demandèrent à grands cris à Simon de faire la paix avec eux:
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 "Ne nous traite pas, dirent-ils, selon notre méchanceté, mais selon ta miséricorde."
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simon fit un arrangement avec eux et ne les combattit pas. Seulement, il les chassa de laville, purifia les maisons dans lesquelles il y avait des idoles, et alors il y entra au chant des hymnes et desbénédictions.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Il en bannit toute impureté, y établit des hommes qui pratiquaient la Loi et, l'ayant fortifiée,il s'y bâtit pour lui-même une résidence.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Quant à ceux de la Citadelle à Jérusalem, ils étaient empêchés de sortir et de se rendre à lacampagne, d'acheter et de vendre: ils eurent terriblement faim et nombre d'entre eux furent emportés par lafamine.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Ils demandèrent avec cris à Simon de faire la paix avec eux, ce qu'il leur accorda. Il leschassa de là et purifia la Citadelle de toute souillure.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 Les Juifs y firent leur entrée le 23 du deuxième mois de l'an 171, avec des acclamations etdes palmes, au son des lyres, des cymbales et des harpes, au chant des hymnes et des cantiques, parce qu'ungrand ennemi avait été brisé et jeté hors d'Israël.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Simon ordonna de célébrer chaque année ce jour-là avec jubilation. Il fortifia la montagnedu sanctuaire du côté de la Citadelle et y habita lui et les siens.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Simon vit que Jean, son fils, était vraiment un homme; aussi l'établit-il chef de toutes lesforces; il résidait à Gazara.
