1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Simone apprese che Trifone aveva radunato un grande esercito per andare nella terra di Giuda per devastarla.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 Vedendo che il popolo era impaurito e spaventato, salì a Gerusalemme e radunò il popolo;
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 quindi li esortò e disse loro: "Voi conoscete quanto io, i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo fatto per le leggi e per il luogo santo, le guerre e le angustie che abbiamo visto.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 E' per questo che i miei fratelli sono tutti periti per la causa d'Israele e io sono restato solo.
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Ora non sia mai che io voglia risparmiare la mia vita in qualsiasi momento di tribolazione! Non sono, infatti, migliore dei miei fratelli.
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 Piuttosto vendicherò la mia nazione, il luogo santo, le vostre mogli e i vostri figli, perché tutte le genti, a causa del loro odio, si sono coalizzate per sterminarci".
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 All'udire queste parole, lo spirito del popolo si riaccese
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 e risposero a gran voce dicendo: "Tu sei il nostro capo, al posto di Giuda e di Gionata, tuo fratello.
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 Combatti la nostra battaglia e tutte le cose che dirai noi faremo".
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Allora egli radunò tutti gli uomini atti a combattere e si affrettò a terminare le mura di Gerusalemme, fortificandola all'intorno.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 Poi inviò Gionata, figlio di Assalonne, a Giaffa con un numeroso esercito e questi ne cacciò via gli abitanti e vi si stabilì.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 Trifone si mosse da Tolemaide con un grande esercito per andare nella terra di Giuda, portando con sé Gionata sotto buona guardia.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simone allora andò ad accamparsi in Adida, di fronte alla pianura.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Quando Trifone seppe che Simone aveva preso il posto di Gionata suo fratello e che stava per dargli battaglia, gli inviò messaggeri per dirgli:
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 "E' a causa del danaro che tuo fratello Gionata doveva al tesoro reale per gl'incarichi da lui avuti che noi lo tratteniamo.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Ora perciò mandaci cento talenti e due dei suoi figli in ostaggio, sicché una volta rimesso in libertà egli non si separi da noi; e noi lo lasceremo".
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simone capì che parlavano con inganno e tuttavia mandò a prendere il danaro e i fanciulli per non suscitare una grande ostilità tra il popolo,
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 il quale avrebbe detto: "E' per il fatto che egli non gli ha inviato il danaro e i fanciulli che Gionata è perito".
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Perciò gli mandò i fanciulli e i cento talenti. Ma quello, avendo mentito, non lasciò libero Gionata.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Dopo ciò Trifone riprese la sua marcia per invadere la regione e per devastarla, aggirandola per la via di Adora; ma Simone con il suo esercito gli si opponeva dovunque egli andasse.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Frattanto quelli dell'Acra inviarono messi a Trifone per sollecitarlo ad andare in loro aiuto per la via del deserto e ad inviare loro viveri.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 Trifone fece preparare tutta la sua cavalleria per andare, ma in quella stessa notte cadde molta neve ed egli per la neve non poté andare. Perciò levò il campo e se ne andò nel Gàlaad,
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 e come giunse nei pressi di Bascama uccise Gionata, il quale fu sepolto là.
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 Trifone quindi si mosse di lì e fece ritorno alla sua terra.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Simone poi mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello e lo seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 Tutto Israele allora lo pianse con grande pianto e fecero lutto su di lui per molti giorni.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 Simone poi fece una costruzione sul sepolcro di suo padre e dei suoi fratelli e l'innalzò alla vista con pietre levigate, sia sulla parte posteriore sia su quella anteriore.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 Vi drizzò sette piramidi, l'una di fronte all'altra, per suo padre, per sua madre e per i suoi quattro fratelli;
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 le fece decorare con grandi colonne all'intorno e sulle colonne fece scolpire armi a ricordo perpetuo, e a fianco delle armi alcune navi scolpite, in modo che si potesse vedere da tutti coloro che navigano nel mare.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Questo è il sepolcro che egli fece fare in Modin fino a questo giorno.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Trifone si comportava con inganno verso il giovanissimo re Antioco e lo uccise.
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 Regnò al suo posto, cinse il diadema dell'Asia e fu una grande calamità per il paese.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Intanto Simone ricostruì le fortezze di Giuda, le munì di alte torri, di grandi mura, di porte e di sbarre e rifornì tali fortezze di viveri.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Inoltre scelse alcuni uomini e li inviò dal re Demetrio affinché concedesse l'immunità al paese, poiché tutte le azioni di Trifone non erano che rapine.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 Il re Demetrio gl'inviò una risposta conforme alle sue richieste e gli scrisse una lettera di questo tenore:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 "Il re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote e amico dei re, agli anziani e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Abbiamo gradito la corona d'oro e la palma che ci avete inviato, siamo pronti a fare una pace durevole con voi e a scrivere ai funzionari di concedervi le immunità.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Quanto abbiamo stabilito nei vostri riguardi resta stabilito e anche le fortezze che voi avete edificato restino a voi.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Condoniamo gli errori e le mancanze commesse fino al giorno d'oggi e così pure la corona che ci dovete. Se qualche altro tributo gravasse su Gerusalemme, non sia più da riscuotere.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 Se poi vi sono tra voi uomini atti a essere arruolati per la nostra guardia, si arruolino, e vi sia pace tra noi".
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 L'anno 170 fu tolto il giogo delle genti da Israele
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 e il popolo incominciò a scrivere nei documenti e nei contratti: "Anno primo di Simone, sommo sacerdote insigne, stratega e capo dei Giudei".
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 In quei giorni Simone si accampò sotto Ghezer e la circondò con le sue truppe; costruì una torre mobile, l'accostò alla città e, abbattuta una torre, se ne impadronì.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Quelli che erano nella torre mobile fecero irruzione nella città e vi fu in essa una grande agitazione.
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 Gli abitanti della città allora salirono con le mogli e con i figli sulle mura e, stracciatesi le vesti, incominciarono a gridare con grande voce supplicando Simone di dar loro la destra.
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 Dicevano: "Non trattarci secondo le nostre malvagità, ma secondo la tua misericordia".
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simone si accordò con loro e non li combatté più. Tuttavia li cacciò dalla città e ne purificò le case, nelle quali vi erano idoli, ed entrò in essa tra canti di inni e di benedizioni.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Bandì da essa ogni impurità e vi stabilì uomini osservanti della legge; la fortificò e vi edificò una casa per sé.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Ora quelli dell'Acra a Gerusalemme erano impediti di uscire e di andare nella regione per comprare e per vendere; soffrivano molto la fame e molti di loro erano già periti per la fame.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Perciò supplicarono Simone di accettare la loro destra in segno di pace ed egli la concesse; ma li scacciò di lì e purificò l'Acra dalle contaminazioni.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 Vi entrarono il 23 del secondo mese dell'anno 171, tra canti di lode e rami di palme, con cetre, cembali e arpe, inni e canti, poiché un grande nemico era stato sradicato da Israele.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Simone stabilì di celebrare ogni anno tale giorno con letizia. Fortificò il monte del tempio accanto all'Acra, e vi andò ad abitare insieme ai suoi.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Simone vide allora che suo figlio Giovanni era ormai un uomo e lo pose a capo di tutte le truppe. Costui pose la sua residenza a Ghezer.
