1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.	1 Ma il re d'Egitto radunò un esercito innumerevole come l'arena che è sulla spiaggia del mare, e molte navi, e cercava di conquistare per inganno il regno di Alessandro, per aggiungerlo al suo regno.
2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.	2 E con parole di pace si avanzò nella Siria: gli aprivano le città e gli andavano incontro, perchè il re Alessandro aveva comandato di uscirgli incontro, essendo suo suocero.
3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.	3 Ma Tolomeo, entrando nelle città, metteva in tutte presidii di soldati.
4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.	4 E quando fu vicino ad Azoto, gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon incendiato, Azoto e i suoi dintorni in rovina, e i cadaveri sparsi, e i tumuli che essi avevan fatti lungo la via per quelli che eran morti in battaglia.
5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.	5 E raccontarono al re che tali cose le aveva fatte Gionata per renderglielo odioso; ma il re tacque.
6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.	6 E Gionata con grande magnificenza andò incontro al re in Ioppe, e si salutarono scambievolmente e vi passarono la notte.
7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.	7 E Gionata andò col re fino al fiume chiamato Eleutero, poi se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.
8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.	8 Ma il re Tolomeo s'impadronì di tutte le città fino a Seleucia marittima, e meditava cattivi disegni contro Alessandro.
9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:	9 E mandò degli ambasciatori a Demetrio, facendogli dire: «Vieni, facciamo un patto fra di noi e ti darò la mia figlia, sposata ad Alessandro, e regnerai sul trono di tuo padre.
10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.	10 Perchè io mi son pentito d'aver data la mia figliola a lui, che ha tentato di uccidermi ».
11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.	11 Così lo infamava, perchè ne voleva il regno.
12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.	12 E gli tolse la figliola e la diede a Demetrio, e si alienò da Alessandro, e le loro inimicizie divennero pubbliche.
13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.	13 E Tolomeo entrò in Antiochia, e pose sul suo capo due diademi: quello dell'Egitto e quello dell'Asia.
14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.	14 Il re Alessandro era allora in Cilicia, perchè gli abitanti di quella regione si erano ribellati.
15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.	15 Ma quando udì tali cose, Alessandro mosse contro di lui per combatterlo, e Tolomeo, messe in campo le sue schiere, gli andò incontro con grandi forze, e lo sconfisse.
16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:	16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia, per mettersi in sicuro, e il re Tolomeo trionfò.
17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.	17 L'arabo Zabdiel troncò il capo ad Alessandro e lo mandò a Tolomeo.
18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.	18 Ma di lì a tre giorni il re Tolomeo morì, e quelli che erano nelle fortezze furono uccisi da quelli che erano negli accampamenti.
19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.	19 E Demetrio prese possesso dèi regno nell'anno centosessantasette.
20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.	20 In quei giorni Gionata adunò quelli che erano nella Giudea, per espugnare la cittadella di Gerusalemme, ed alzò contro di essa molte macchine da guerra.
21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,	21 Ma alcuni, nemici della propria nazione e uomini iniqui, andarono dal re Demetrio a riferirgli che Gionata assediava la cittadella.
22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.	22 A tal notizia (il re) arse di sdegno, e subito andò a Tolemaide, e scrisse a Gionata di cessar l'assedio della cittadella e di andar subito a parlare con lui.
23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;	23 Udito ciò, Gionata ordinò di continuare l'assedio, e, presi seco degli anziani d'Israele e dei sacerdoti, si espose al pericolo.
24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.	24 E, portando seco oro, argento, vesti e molti altri regali, andò a trovare il re a Tolemaide, e trovò grazia davanti a lui.
25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,	25 Alcuni iniqui della sua nazione portarono delle accuse contro di lui;
26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,	26 ma il re lo trattò come avevan fatto i suoi predecessori, e lo ricolmò di onori dinanzi a tutti i suoi amici,
27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.	27 e lo confermò nel sommo pontificato, e in tutti i distintivi d'onore che aveva precedentemente, e lo fece il primo dei suoi amici.
28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.	28 E Gionata chiese al re l'immunità per la Giudea, per lo tre Toparchie, e per la Samaria e per tutto il suo territorio, promettendogli trecento talenti.
29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:	29 Il re acconsenti, e riguardo a tutte queste cose scrisse a Gionata una lettera in questi termini:
30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	30 « il re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.
31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.	31 Vi mandiamo, per farvela conoscere, la copia della lettera che noi abbiamo scritta a Lastene, padre nostro, riguardo a voi.
32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:	32 Il re Demetrio a Lastene, suo padre, salute.
33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.	33 Abbiamo risoluto di fare del bene alla nazione dei Giudei, nostri amici, e che osservano ciò che è giusto riguardo a noi, per la benevolenza che hanno verso di noi.
34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.	34 Confermiamo adunque ad essi tutto il territorio della Giudea, e le tre città, (Afcrema), Lida e Ramata, che sono state aggiunte alla Giudea dalla Samaria, con tutto il loro territorio; in favore di tutti quelli che vanno a sacrificare a Gerusalemme rimettiamo ciò che prima il re esigeva e per i frutti della terra delle piante;
35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.	35 e fin da ora condoniamo loro ciò che a noi è dovuto delle decime, dei tributi, e le saline, e le corone che eran portate a noi.
36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.	36 Tutto ciò loro concediamo, e tutto irrevocabilmente da questo momento per sempre.
37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.	37 Or dunque procurate di fare un esemplare di queste cose, e sia dato a Gionata, affinchè sia depositato sul monte Sion, in luogo distinto ».
38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.	38 Or il re Demetrio, visto che la terra era tranquilla davanti a lui, e che nessuno gli resisteva, congedò tutto il suo esercito, rimandando ciascuno a casa sua, eccettuate le truppe straniere che aveva assoldate dalle isole delle nazioni: per questo si inimicò tutte le milizie dei suoi padri.
39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,	39 Or vi era un certo Trifone, che era prima del partito d'Alessandro, il quale, vedendo che tutto l'esercito mormorava contro Demetrio, andò a trovare l'arabo Emalcuel, il quale educava Antioco figlio di Alessandro.
40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.	40 E lo pressò a consegnarlo a lui, per farlo regnare in luogo di suo padre, e gli raccontò tutto quello che aveva fatto Demetrio e come era odiato da tutto l'esercito. E stette lì molto tempo.
41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.	41 Or Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di far ritirare quelli che erano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme e negli altri presidii, perchè facevano la guerra a Israele.
42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.	42 E Demetrio mandò a dire a Gionata: « Io non farò soltanto questo per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di splendidi onori te e la tua nazione, quando ne avrò l'occasione.
43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.	43 Ma ora farai bene a mandare in mio aiuto degli uomini, perchè il mio esercito se n'è andato tutto ».
44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.	44 E Gionata gli mandò ad Antiochia tremila uomini valorosi, che andarono dal re, il quale ebbe gran piacere del loro arrivo.
45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.	45 E gli abitanti di quella città si adunarono, in numero di centoventi mila uomini, e volevano uccidere il re.
46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.	46 Il re si rifugiò nella reggia, e gli abitanti della città, occupate le strade, cominciarono a combattere.
47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.	47 Allora il re chiamò in suo aiuto i Giudei, i quali si radunarono tutti insieme intorno a lui, e poi si sparsero tutti per la città,
48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.	48 e vi uccisero in quel giorno cento mila uomini, e vi appiccarono il fuoco, e presero molte spoglie in quel giorno, e liberarono il re.
49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,	49 E quelli della città, vedendo come i Giudei erano padroni assoluti della città, si persero di coraggio, e supplichevoli gridarono al re, dicendo:
50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.	50 « Porgici la destra, e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città! ».
51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.	51 E, gettate le armi, fecero la pace; e i Giudei acquistarono molta gloria davanti al re e davanti a tutti quelli che erano nel suo regno, e divennero famosi nel regno, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme ricchi di spoglie.
52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.	52 Ma quando Demetrio fu nel sicuro possesso del suo regno, e la terra stette tranquilla davanti a lui,
53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.	53 mancò a tutto quello che aveva promesso, si alienò da Gionata, e non lo trattò secondo i benefizi da lui ricevuti, ma assai lo vessava.
54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.	54 Dopo tali cose tornò Trifone, e con lui era Antioco, ancor fanciullo, il quale fu proclamato re e cinse il diadema.
55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.	55 E si radunarono intorno a lui tutti i soldati mandati via da Demetrio, i quali combatterono contro Demetrio, che fuggì e fu disfatto.
56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.	56 Allora Trifone, prese le bestie, occupò Antiochia.
57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.	57 E il giovane Antioco scrisse a Gionata in questi termini: « Ti confermo nel sacerdozio, ti stabilisco sopra le quattro città, e ti dò il posto tra gli amici del re ».
58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.	58 E gli mandò dei vasi d'oro pel servizio (da tavola) e l'autorizzò a bere in (coppe) d'oro, a vestir di porpora, a portar la fibbia d'oro.
59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.	59 E il suo fratello Simone lo creò governatore dei confini di Tiro fino a quelli dell'Egitto.
60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.	60 E Gionata si mosse e si mise a percorrere le città al di là del fiume; intorno a lui si radunò tutto l'esercito della Siria, per aiutarlo; ed egli giunse ad Ascalona, e quelli della città gli uscirono incontro ad onorarlo.
61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.	61 E di lì passò a Gaza. Avendogli quelli di Gaza chiuse le porte, egli l'assediò, diede alle fiamme i suoi dintorni e li saccheggiò.
62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.	62 Allora quelli di Gaza si raccomandarono a Gionata, ed egli diede loro la destra, e, presi come ostaggi i loro figlioli, li mandò a Gerusalemme, e scorse per la regione fino a Damasco.
63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,	63 E Gionata intese come i capitani di Demetrio s'erano raccolti in Cades, che è nella Galilea, con numeroso esercito, volendo allontanarlo dagli affari del regno.
64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.	64 Ed egli si mosse contro di essi, lasciando nella provincia Simone suo fratello.
65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:	65 Simone andò ad attaccare Betsura, e siccome li tenne assediati e rinchiusi per molto tempo,
66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.	66 gli chiesero di avere la destra, ed egli la concesse, e, cacciatili via, prese possesso della città e vi pose un presidio.
67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.	67 Intanto Gionata e il suo esercito erano arrivati alle acque di Genezar, e avanti l'alba (del giorno dopo) giunsero nella campagna di Asor.
68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.	68 Ed ecco si videro davanti gli accampamenti degli stranieri, i quali avevan loro tesa un'imboscata. Mentre (Gionata) andava loro incontro,
69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;	69 quelle erano nell'imboscata, vennero fuori loro nascondigli, e attaccarono la battaglia.
70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.	70 Allora quelli che erano con Gionata si diedero tutti alla fuga: non restò nessuno, ad eccezione di Matatia, figlio di Absalom, e di Giuda, figlio di Calfi, capo dell'esercito.
71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.	71 Allora Gionata si stracciò vesti, si gettò della terra sul capo, e pregò.
72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.	72 Poi tornò contro di essi a combatterli, e li mise in fuga, dopo averli attaccati.
73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.	73 E la sua gente che fuggiva, veduto questo, tornarono a lui, e inseguirono tutti insieme con lui il nemico fino a Cades, dove aveva il campo: arrivaron fin là.
74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.	74 E degli stranieri in quel giorno ne perirono tre mila, e Gionata tornò in Gerusalemme.
