1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.	1 Le roi d’Égypte rassembla une armée aussi nombreuse que le sable qui est au bord des mers; il rassembla aussi beaucoup de bateaux, car il voulait s’emparer du royaume d’Alexandre par ruse, pour l’ajouter à son propre royaume.
2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.	2 Il se mit en chemin pour la Syrie avec de très bons prétextes; les gens lui ouvraient les portes de leurs villes et venaient l’accueillir, parce que le roi Alexandre avait donné l’ordre de bien accueillir son beau-père.
3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.	3 Mais aussitôt entré dans les villes, Ptolémée y installait ses propres soldats.
4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.	4 Lorsqu’il approcha d’Azotos, on lui montra le temple de Dagon qui avait été incendié. Azotos et ses environs étaient ravagés, les corps gisaient sur le sol ainsi que les restes de ceux que Jonathan avait brûlés pendant la guerre; ils en avaient fait des tas sur le chemin que suivait le roi.
5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.	5 Ils racontèrent au roi ce qu’avait fait Jonathan pour que celui-ci le condamne, mais le roi se taisait.
6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.	6 Jonathan vint donc à la rencontre du roi à Joppé avec un beau cortège, ils échangèrent leurs saluts et dormirent en ce lieu.
7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.	7 Jonathan accompagna le roi jusqu’au fleuve nommé Éleutère, puis il rentra à Jérusalem.
8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.	8 De son côté, le roi Ptolémée se rendit maître des villes de la côte jusqu’à Séleucie-sur-Mer, avec de mauvaises intentions vis-à-vis d’Alexandre.
9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:	9 Il envoya donc des ambassadeurs au roi Démétrius. Il lui faisait dire: “Viens, faisons ensemble une alliance: je te donnerai la fille que j’avais précédemment donnée à Alexandre, et tu régneras sur le royaume de ton père.
10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.	10 Je regrette en effet de lui avoir donné ma fille, car il a cherché à me tuer.”
11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.	11 Il lui faisait ces reproches, mais il cherchait simplement à s’emparer de son royaume.
12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.	12 Quand il eut repris sa fille, qu’il donna à Démétrius, il changea d’attitude vis-à-vis d’Alexandre; désormais il était clair qu’ils étaient devenus ennemis.
13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.	13 Ptolémée entra à Antioche et il se couronna roi d’Asie: il régnait désormais à la fois sur l’Égypte et sur l’Asie.
14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.	14 Le roi Alexandre se trouvait alors en Cilicie, car les gens de cette région s’étaient révoltés.
15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.	15 Apprenant tout cela, Alexandre s’avança pour livrer bataille à Ptolémée; de son côté Ptolémée se mit en route et marcha à sa rencontre avec une puissante armée qui le mit en fuite.
16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:	16 Alexandre courut se réfugier en Arabie pendant que le roi Ptolémée triomphait.
17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.	17 Sur ce l’Arabe Zabdiel trancha la tête d’Alexandre et l’envoya à Ptolémée.
18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.	18 Mais voilà que le roi Ptolémée mourut le surlendemain et les Égyptiens qui occupaient les villes fortifiées furent massacrés par leurs habitants.
19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.	19 Démétrius devint donc roi en l’an 167.
20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.	20 En ces jours-là, Jonathan réunit les gens de Judée pour attaquer la Citadelle de Jérusalem, il fit dresser contre elle de nombreuses machines de guerre.
21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,	21 Alors un certain nombre de renégats, qui haïssaient leur nation, allèrent trouver le roi pour l’avertir que Jonathan assiégeait la Citadelle.
22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.	22 Le roi aussitôt fut très en colère. À peine fut-il au courant qu’il se mit en route et vint à Ptolémaïs. Il écrivit à Jonathan de cesser le siège et de venir au plus tôt le trouver à Ptolémaïs pour parler avec lui.
23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;	23 Après avoir reçu cette lettre, Jonathan ordonna tout d’abord de poursuivre le siège. Puis il choisit quelques compagnons, des anciens d’Israël et des prêtres, et il n’eut pas peur d’affronter personnellement le danger.
24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.	24 Il emporta avec lui de l’argent, de l’or, des vêtements et beaucoup d’autres cadeaux, il se rendit auprès du roi à Ptolémaïs et gagna sa faveur.
25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,	25 Quelques renégats de son peuple l’accusèrent de toutes sortes de choses,
26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,	26 mais le roi se comporta avec lui comme ses prédécesseurs, il lui fit honneur en présence de tous ses Amis.
27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.	27 Il le confirma dans la charge de grand prêtre, dans toutes les autres distinctions qu’il avait reçues et le fit mettre au nombre des premiers amis du roi.
28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.	28 Jonathan demanda au roi de dispenser d’impôts la Judée et les trois districts de Samarie; il lui promit en retour 300 talents d’argent.
29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:	29 Le roi accepta et fit rédiger une lettre en ces termes:
30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	30 “Le roi Démétrius salue son frère Jonathan et la nation des Juifs.
31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.	31 Vous trouverez ici la copie de la lettre que nous avons écrite à votre sujet à notre parent Lastène. Prenez-en connaissance:
32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:	32 “Le roi Démétrius salue Lastène, son père!
33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.	33 Nous voulons faire du bien à la nation des Juifs, vu leurs bons sentiments envers nous. Ils sont nos amis et se sont comportés avec droiture envers nous.
34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.	34 Nous confirmons leur autorité sur la Judée et les trois districts d’Aféréma, de Lydda et de Ramataïm; ils ont été retirées à la Samarie et annexés à la Judée avec tous leurs environs au profit de tous ceux qui sacrifient à Jérusalem. En échange nous recevrons les taxes royales que le roi percevait autrefois chaque année sur les produits de la terre et les fruits des arbres.
35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.	35 Mais nous les dispensons complètement des dîmes et des impôts qui nous reviennent sur les marais salants ainsi que les autres taxes royales.
36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.	36 On ne remettra plus jamais en question ces privilèges.
37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.	37 Veillez donc à en faire une copie qui sera donnée à Jonathan et placée sur la Montagne Sainte en un lieu bien visible.”
38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.	38 Le roi Démétrius vit que le pays était en paix et qu’il n’avait plus à redouter aucune opposition; il renvoya toutes ses troupes et chacun rentra chez soi à l’exception des troupes étrangères qu’il avait recrutées dans des îles lointaines. Il s’attira ainsi la haine de toutes les troupes dont il avait hérité.
39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,	39 Voyant que toute l’armée murmurait contre Démétrius, Tryphon, qui avait pris autrefois le parti d’Alexandre, alla trouver Imalkoué, l’Arabe qui élevait Antiocus, le jeune fils d’Alexandre.
40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.	40 Il l’amena à lui livrer l’enfant pour le faire régner à la place de son père; il lui raconta tout ce que Démétrius avait fait, la haine de ses troupes contre lui et il resta là de longs jours.
41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.	41 Au même moment Jonathan envoyait demander au roi Démétrius de faire sortir les troupes de la Citadelle de Jérusalem et des autres forteresses, car elles étaient toujours en guerre avec Israël.
42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.	42 Démétrius lui envoya cette réponse: “Je ne me contenterai pas de faire cela pour toi et pour ta nation, je veux te combler d’honneurs ainsi que ta nation dès que j’en aurai l’occasion.
43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.	43 Pour le moment tu ferais bien d’envoyer des troupes à mon aide, car toutes mes armées m’ont abandonné.”
44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.	44 Jonathan lui envoya à Antioche 3 000 hommes d’élite et le roi fut tout heureux de les voir arriver.
45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.	45 Près de 120 000 habitants se rassemblèrent au centre de la ville avec l’intention de tuer le roi.
46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.	46 Le roi s’était réfugié dans le palais. Les habitants occupèrent les rues de la ville et commencèrent l’attaque.
47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.	47 Alors le roi appela à son secours les Juifs. Ils se regroupèrent tous autour de lui, puis ils se répandirent à travers la ville; ils massacrèrent ce jour-là près de 100 000 hommes.
48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.	48 Ils incendièrent la ville et ramassèrent ce jour-là un butin considérable: ils avaient délivré le roi.
49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,	49 Quand les habitants virent les Juifs maîtres de la ville, ils perdirent toute assurance et se tournèrent vers le roi avec des cris suppliants:
50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.	50 “Tends-nous la main et que les Juifs cessent de lutter contre nous et contre la ville!”
51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.	51 Ils jetèrent leurs armes et firent la paix; ce fut une grande gloire pour les Juifs aux yeux du roi et aux yeux de tous les habitants de son royaume. Ils retournèrent ainsi à Jérusalem porteurs d’un riche butin;
52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.	52 le trône royal de Démétrius fut affermi et le pays fut en paix sous son autorité.
53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.	53 Mais alors il manqua à toutes ses promesses. Il changea d’attitude envers Jonathan, il oublia les services qu’il lui avait rendus et l’humilia de mille façons.
54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.	54 Tryphon revint alors, ramenant avec lui Antiocus qui était encore un jeune enfant; il le proclama roi et lui remit la couronne.
55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.	55 Toutes les troupes que Démétrius avait renvoyées se rassemblèrent autour de lui, elles combattirent Démétrius qui prit la fuite et fut écrasé.
56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.	56 Tryphon s’empara des éléphants et occupa Antioche.
57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.	57 Alors le jeune Antiocus écrivit cette lettre à Jonathan: “Je te confirme dans la charge de grand prêtre, je t’établis sur les quatre provinces et je te compte au nombre des Amis du roi.”
58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.	58 En même temps il lui envoya des vases d’or, un service de table avec l’autorisation de boire dans une coupe d’or, de s’habiller de pourpre et de porter une agrafe d’or.
59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.	59 Il établit son frère Simon comme général depuis l’Échelle de Tyr jusqu’aux frontières de l’Égypte.
60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.	60 Jonathan partit alors et se mit à parcourir le pays et les villes au-delà du Fleuve. Toutes les troupes de Syrie se rassemblèrent autour de lui pour combattre derrière lui. Il arriva à Ascalon où les habitants le reçurent magnifiquement.
61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.	61 De là il se rendit à Gaza, mais Gaza lui ferma ses portes; il l’assiégea et livra ses environs au feu et au pillage.
62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.	62 Alors les habitants de Gaza supplièrent Jonathan qui leur accorda la paix; il prit cependant les fils de leurs chefs en otages et les envoya à Jérusalem. C’est ainsi qu’il parcourut toute la région jusqu’à Damas.
63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,	63 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient à Qédesh de Galilée avec une nombreuse armée, bien décidés à l’écarter de sa charge.
64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.	64 Il marcha donc à leur rencontre après avoir confié le pays à son frère Simon.
65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:	65 Simon s’avança vers Beth-Sour, il y mit le siège et y enferma les habitants.
66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.	66 Ils lui demandèrent alors la paix qu’il leur accorda, mais il les fit sortir de la ville et, après en avoir pris possession, il y plaça une garnison.
67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.	67 Jonathan et son armée campèrent près des eaux de Gennésar et au matin ils arrivèrent dans la plaine d’Asor.
68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.	68 L’armée des étrangers s’avançait au-devant de lui dans la plaine, mais elle avait envoyé des troupes dans les montagnes pour prendre à revers Jonathan; pendant ce temps les autres marchaient droit sur les Juifs.
69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;	69 Lorsque les hommes de l’embuscade sortirent de leur cachette et engagèrent le combat,
70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.	70 tous ceux qui entouraient Jonathan prirent la fuite, sauf ses deux généraux, Mattathias fils d’Absalom, et Judas fils de Chalfi.
71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.	71 Alors Jonathan déchira ses vêtements, il répandit de la poussière sur sa tête et pria.
72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.	72 Il repartit ensuite au combat, les fit reculer et les mit en fuite.
73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.	73 À cette vue, ses hommes qui s’étaient enfuis revinrent près de lui, et ensemble ils poursuivirent l’ennemi jusqu’à Qédesh, où se trouvait son camp; eux-mêmes établirent leur camp en ce lieu.
74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.	74 L’armée des étrangers perdit 3 000 hommes ce jour-là; quant à Jonathan, il revint à Jérusalem.
