1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.	1 Il re dell'Egitto radunò truppe, numerose come la rena che è sulla riva del mare, e navi in quantità, volendo impadronirsi con astuzia del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al suo proprio regno.
2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.	2 Si mosse alla volta della Siria con parole di pace e gli abitanti delle città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché il re Alessandro, essendo suo suocero, aveva ordinato di andargli incontro.
3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.	3 Tolomeo, però, una volta entrato nelle città, lasciava in ognuna le sue truppe per custodirle.
4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.	4 Quando giunse ad Asdòd, gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon incendiato, Asdòd stessa e i suoi sobborghi distrutti, i cadaveri abbandonati e i resti di quelli che Gionata aveva fatto bruciare in guerra: di questi, infatti, ne avevano fatto dei mucchi lungo il suo percorso.
5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.	5 Gli raccontarono pure quanto aveva fatto Gionata, pensando che egli lo avrebbe biasimato, ma il re tacque.
6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.	6 Gionata, con grande pompa, andò ad incontrare il re a Giaffa; si salutarono l'un l'altro e passarono la notte là.
7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.	7 Gionata poi andò con il re fino al fiume chiamato Elèutero e quindi se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.
8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.	8 Il re Tolomeo divenne così padrone delle città del litorale fino a Seleucia marittima, mentre meditava cattivi progetti ai danni di Alessandro.
9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:	9 Egli poi inviò degli ambasciatori al re Demetrio e gli fece dire: "Vieni, facciamo alleanza tra noi. Ti darò mia figlia che Alessandro ha in moglie e regnerai nel regno di tuo padre.
10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.	10 Io, infatti, mi sono pentito di avergli dato mia figlia, poiché egli tentò di uccidermi".
11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.	11 In realtà egli lo biasimava perché bramava impossessarsi del suo regno.
12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.	12 Quindi, toltagli sua figlia, la diede a Demetrio. In questo modo si separò da Alessandro e la loro inimicizia si fece manifesta.
13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.	13 Tolomeo poi entrò in Antiochia e vi cinse il diadema dell'Asia: pose sulla sua testa due diademi, quello dell'Egitto e quello dell'Asia.
14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.	14 Il re Alessandro in quei giorni era in Cilicia, perché gli abitanti di quelle zone gli si erano ribellati.
15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.	15 Quando Alessandro fu informato di ciò, marciò contro di lui in guerra; ma Tolomeo, uscito fuori, gli mosse contro con grande potenza e lo mise in fuga.
16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:	16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi riparo; il re Tolomeo invece fu glorificato.
17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.	17 L'arabo Zabdiel mozzò la testa di Alessandro e l'inviò a Tolomeo.
18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.	18 Ma tre giorni dopo anche il re Tolomeo morì e i suoi uomini che erano nelle fortezze furono uccisi dagli altri che erano nelle fortezze stesse.
19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.	19 Così Demetrio incominciò a regnare nell'anno 16 7.
20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.	20 In quei giorni Gionata radunò gli uomini della Giudea per attaccare l'Acra che era in Gerusalemme, e fece fare molte macchine militari per usarle contro di essa.
21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,	21 Allora alcuni uomini iniqui, che odiavano la propria gente, andarono dal re e gli riferirono che Gionata assediava l'Acra.
22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.	22 Udito ciò, il re si adirò e, avutane conferma, levò subito il campo e si recò a Tolemaide e scrisse a Gionata di togliere l'assedio e di andargli incontro al più presto a Tolemaide per conferire con lui.
23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;	23 Udito ciò, Gionata comandò di continuare l'assedio; poi, scelti alcuni anziani d'Israele e sacerdoti, affrontò il pericolo.
24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.	24 Preso argento, oro, vestiti e molti altri doni, si recò dal re a Tolemaide e trovò grazia presso di lui.
25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,	25 Alcuni empi della sua nazione tentarono di intervenire contro di lui,
26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,	26 ma il re lo trattò come lo avevano trattato i suoi predecessori e lo esaltò davanti a tutti i suoi amici.
27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.	27 Gli confermò il sommo sacerdozio e tutte le altre dignità che aveva per l'innanzi e volle che fosse annoverato tra i primi amici.
28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.	28 Gionata chiese al re di rendere la Giudea esente dalle imposte, al pari delle tre toparchie e della Samaria, promettendogli trecento talenti.
29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:	29 Il re accondiscese e scrisse a Gionata, intorno a tutte queste cose, lettere così concepite:
30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	30 "Re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!
31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.	31 Una copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene, nostro parente, a vostro riguardo, la scriviamo anche per voi affinché ne prendiate conoscenza.
32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:	32 Il re Demetrio al padre Làstene, salute!
33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.	33 Alla nazione dei Giudei, che sono nostri amici e osservano ciò che è giusto verso di noi, abbiamo giudicato opportuno far loro del bene in ragione dei buoni sentimenti che hanno per noi.
34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.	34 Pertanto confermiamo loro il possesso dei territori della Giudea e dei tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim. Essi, con le loro dipendenze, dalla Samaria furono annessi alla Giudea a favore di tutti quelli che offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso delle imposte regali che il re prendeva da essi per l'innanzi ogni anno, sui prodotti della terra e sui frutti degli alberi.
35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.	35 Quanto agli altri diritti che abbiamo sulle decime e sui tributi che ci si devono, sulle saline e le corone che ci erano dovute, da questo momento vi rinunziamo completamente.
36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.	36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà revocata a partire da questo momento e per sempre.
37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.	37 Abbiate dunque cura di fare una copia della presente e di consegnarla a Gionata affinché sia collocata sul monte santo in luogo ben visibile".
38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.	38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era calmo davanti a lui e che nessuno gli si opponeva, licenziò tutte le sue truppe, ognuno al proprio paese, ad eccezione delle truppe straniere, che egli aveva reclutato dalle isole delle nazioni. Allora tutte le truppe che erano state con i suoi padri incominciarono ad osteggiarlo.
39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,	39 Trifone ch'era stato per l'innanzi dalla parte di Alessandro, vedendo che tutte le truppe mormoravano contro Demetrio, si recò presso l'arabo Imalcue, che allevava Antioco, il giovane figlio di Alessandro,
40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.	40 e lo circuiva affinché glielo consegnasse per farlo regnare al posto di suo padre. Gli parlò pure delle cose che Demetrio aveva ordinato e dell'inimicizia che i suoi soldati nutrivano per lui; e rimase lì per molti giorni.
41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.	41 Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di rimuovere da Gerusalemme gli uomini che erano nell'Acra e gli altri che erano nelle fortezze, perché facevano guerra a Israele.
42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.	42 Demetrio però mandò a dire a Gionata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di onori te e la tua nazione, appena mi si presenti la buona occasione.
43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.	43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, poiché tutte le truppe mi si sono allontanate".
44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.	44 Gionata gli inviò in Antiochia tremila uomini molto valorosi e, quando questi giunsero presso il re, il re si rallegrò per il loro arrivo.
45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.	45 Gli abitanti della città si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila e volevano eliminare il re.
46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.	46 Il re però si rifugiò nel palazzo, mentre gli abitanti della città invadevano le vie della città e incominciavano a combattere.
47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.	47 Il re allora chiamò in soccorso i Giudei e questi si radunarono presso di lui tutti insieme; poi si dispersero per la città e ne uccisero, in quel giorno, circa centomila.
48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.	48 Diedero fuoco alla città, raccolsero molte spoglie in quel giorno e salvarono il re.
49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,	49 Ora gli abitanti della città, quando videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacimento, si persero d'animo e incominciarono ad elevare suppliche al re dicendo:
50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.	50 "Dacci la destra e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città!".
51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.	51 Deposero le armi e fecero la pace. Così i Giudei si coprirono di gloria davanti al re e a tutti i cittadini del suo regno e ritornarono a Gerusalemme con molte spoglie.
52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.	52 In questo modo il re Demetrio poté sedersi sul trono del suo regno e il paese rimase tranquillo sotto di lui.
53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.	53 Egli poi, però, rinnegò tutto ciò che aveva promesso, si mostrò ostile a Gionata e non ricambiò i favori che questi gli aveva reso; anzi incominciò a vessarlo duramente.
54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.	54 Dopo queste cose, Trifone ritornò con Antioco, ancora molto giovane. Incominciò a regnare e cinse il diadema.
55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.	55 Si radunarono attorno a lui tutte le truppe che Demetrio aveva congedato e combatterono contro costui, il quale fu messo in fuga e travolto,
56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.	56 mentre Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.
57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.	57 Il giovanetto Antioco scrisse a Gionata dicendogli: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti pongo a capo dei quattro distretti e ti annovero tra gli amici del re".
58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.	58 Gl'inviò vasellame d'oro e un servizio da tavola, gli diede facoltà di bere in vasi d'oro, d'indossare la porpora e di portare una fibbia d'oro.
59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.	59 Inoltre costituì suo fratello Simone stratega dalla Scala di Tiro sino ai confini dell'Egitto.
60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.	60 Gionata cominciò a percorrere la regione d'oltre il fiume e le varie città, e tutto l'esercito di Siria si unì a lui per combattere insieme. Andò ad Ascalòna e gli abitanti della città lo ricevettero con onore.
61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.	61 Di qui andò a Gaza; ma quelli di Gaza gli chiusero le porte. Allora egli l'assediò, incendiò i suoi sobborghi e li saccheggiò.
62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.	62 Quelli di Gaza allora supplicarono Gionata ed egli diede loro la destra in segno di pace; prese tuttavia come ostaggi i figli dei loro capi e li spedì a Gerusalemme. Quindi attraversò la regione fino a Damasco.
63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,	63 Ma poi, avendo saputo che i generali di Demetrio si trovavano a Cades in Galilea con un grande esercito e che volevano fargli abbandonare l'impresa,
64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.	64 marciò contro di loro, lasciando suo fratello Simone nella regione.
65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:	65 Simone venne ad accamparsi sotto Bet-Zur e per molti giorni combatté contro di essa tenendola assediata.
66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.	66 Lo supplicarono di accettare la loro destra ed egli acconsentì. Tuttavia li espulse di lì, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.
67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.	67 Gionata e il suo esercito, invece, andarono ad accamparsi presso le acque di Genesaret e di buon mattino giunsero nella pianura di Casòr.
68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.	68 Ed ecco che l'esercito degli stranieri stava loro davanti nella pianura, mentre altri organizzavano un'imboscata contro di lui sui monti. Quelli avanzarono frontalmente,
69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;	69 quando gl'imboscati, usciti dai loro luoghi, attaccarono battaglia.
70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.	70 Gli uomini di Gionata fuggirono, nessuno di loro rimase, all'infuori di Mattatia, figlio di Assalonne, e Giuda, figlio di Calfi, capi dell'esercito.
71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.	71 Gionata si stracciò le vesti, si cosparse il capo di polvere e pregò.
72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.	72 Quindi si voltò contro i nemici combattendo, li mise in rotta e fuggirono.
73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.	73 Visto ciò, quelli che erano fuggiti tornarono da lui e con lui li inseguirono fino al loro accampamento a Cades. Quivi si accamparono.
74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.	74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila uomini. Quindi Gionata fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.
