1 And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own.	1 Ma il re d'Egitto rauno' un esercito in numerabile come l'arena, che è alla spiaggia del mare, e gran numero di navi; e cercava di conquistar per inganno il regno di Alessandro, e aggiungerlo al suo regno.
2 Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.	2 E con buone parole si introdusse nella Siria, e gli erano aperte le città, e gli andavano incontro; perocchè il re Alessandro avea comandato, che lo ricevessero con onore, perché era suo suocero.
3 Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.	3 Ma Tolomeo entrando nelle città metteva in tutte presidio di soldati.
4 And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.	4 E quand'ei fu vicino ad Azoto gli fu mostrato il tempio di Dagon incendiato, non men che Azoto e le altre rovine e gli sparsi cadaveri e i tumuli fatti da essi lungo la strada per quelli che eran morti in battaglia.
5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.	5 E dissero al re, che tali cose erano state opera di Gionata per renderglielo odioso: e il re si tacque.
6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.	6 E Gionata andò incontro al re a Joppe con magnificenza; e si salutarono scambievolmente, e passaron ivi la notte.
7 Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.	7 E Gionata andò col re sino al fiume chiamato Eleuthero; e se ne tornò a Geruselemme.
8 King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.	8 Ma il re Tolomeo si impadronì di tutte le città fino a Seleucia, che è al mare; e macchinava tradimenti contro Alessandro.
9 Whereupon he sent ambasadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom:	9 E mandò suoi ambasciadori a Demetrio facendogli dire: Vieni, accordiamoci insieme, e io ti darò la mia figliuola sposata da Alessandro, e tu tornerai sul trono del padre tuo.
10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.	10 Perocchè io son pentito di avergli dato la mia figliuola, mentre ha tentato di uccidermi.
11 Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.	11 Così egli lo svituperava, perché volea avere il suo regno.
12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.	12 E gli tolse la sua figliuola, e la diede a Demetrio, e si alienò da Alessandro, e si rendi manifesto il suo cattivo animo.
13 Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.	13 E Tolomeo entrò in Antiochia, e si messe in testa due diademi, dell'Egitto e dell'Asia.
14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.	14 Or il re Alessandro era allora nella Cilicia, perché la gente di que' paesi si ribellava.
15 But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.	15 E Alessandro, udite tali cose, si mosse contro di lui coll'esercito: e Tolomeo si messe in campo colle sue schiere, e gli andò incontro con grandi forze, e la sconfisse.
16 So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:	16 E fuggi Alessandro nell'Arabia permettersi in sicuro. E il re Tolomeo crebbe in possanza.
17 For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.	17 E Zabdiel Arabo troncò il capo ad Alessandro, e mandollo a Tolomeo.
18 King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.	18 E di lì a tre giorni morì il re Tolomeo, e quelli che erano nelle cittadelle furono sterminati da quei che erano nel campo.
19 By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.	19 E Demetrio prese il possesso del regno l'anno cento sessanta sette.
20 At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.	20 In quel tempo Gionata adunò le milizie della Giudea per espugnare la cittadella di Gerusalemme; e alzarono le macchine attorno ad essa.
21 Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,	21 Ma andarono alcuni, nemici della propria nazione, uomini perversi a riferire al re Demetrio, che Gionata aveva assediata la cittadella.
22 Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.	22 E questa nuovo lo irritò forte, e subito andò a Tolemaida, e scrisse a Gionata di levar l'assedio della cittadella, e di andar subito a parlare con lui.
23 Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;	23 Udito ciò Gionata ordinò, che si seguitasse l'assedio; e presi seco de' seniori e de' sacerdoti d'Israele, si espose al pericolo.
24 And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.	24 E portò seco dell'oro e dell'argento e delle vesti e molti altri regali, e andò a trovare il re a Tolemaida, e si ingrazionì con lui.
25 And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,	25 E alcuni perversi uomini di sua nazione lo accusavano.
26 Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,	26 Ma il re lo trattò come avean fatto i suoi predecessori, e l'onorava dinanzi a tutti i suoi amici,
27 And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.	27 E lo confermò nel sommo Pontificato e in tutti gli onori, che aveo per l'avanti, e lo fece il primo de' suoi amici.
28 Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.	28 E Gionata chiese al re, che concedesse l'immunità alla Giudea, e alle tre Toparchie e a Samaria e a tutto il suo territorio, promettendogli trecento talenti.
29 So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:	29 E il re acconsentì, e ne fece spedire a Gionata il privilegio in questi termini:
30 King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	30 Il re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione de' Giudei, salute.
31 We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.	31 Vi mandiamo per vostra notizia la copia della lettera scritta da noi a Lasthene padre nostro riguardo a voi:
32 King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:	32 Il re Demetrio a Lasthene suo padre, salute.
33 We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.	33 Ci siamo determinati a beneficare la nazione dei Giudei, che son nostri amici, e osservano quel che è giusto riguardo a noi, a motivo della benevolenza, che hanno verso di noi.
34 Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.	34 Ordinianm adunque, che tutta la Giudea e le tre città, Lida e Ramatha aggiunte alla Giudea dalla provincia di Samaria e tutti i loro territori, sieno destinati per tutti i sacerdoti di Gerusalemme in cambio di quello, che ne esigeva il re ogni anno pei frutti della terra e delle piante.
35 And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.	35 E condoniam loro fin d'adesso le decime e gli altri tributi spettanti a noi, e i laghi salati e le corone, che si davano a noi,
36 And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.	36 Tutte queste cose concediam loro, e tutto irrevocabilmente diam in appresso per sempre.
37 Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.	37 Ora pertanto fate trar copia di questo privilegio, la quale si dia a Gionata, affinchè sia collocata sul monte santo in luogo distinto.
38 After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.	38 Ma veggendo Demetrio, che tutta la terra era tranquilla, e lo rispettava, senza che egli avesse competitore, rimandò alle case loro tutto il suo esercito, eccettuati i soldati stranieri assoldati dalle isole delle nazioni; per la qual cosa si guadagnò l'odio delle milizie tutte de' padri suoi.
39 Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,	39 Or eravi un certo Trifone del partito di Alessandro; e questi vedendo che tutto l'esercito mormorava contro Demetrio, andò a trovare Emalchuel Arabo, il quale educava Antioco figliuolo di Alessandro:
40 And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.	40 E gli stava attorno, perché lo rimettesse a lui per farlo re in luogo del padre suo: e gli raccontava tutto quello che avea fatto Demetrio, e com'egli era odiato da tutto l'esercito: e si fermò colà assai tempo.
41 In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.	41 Or Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio, che facesse andar via quelli che erano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme e ne gli altri presidj perché facevan del male a Israele.
42 So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.	42 E Demetrio fece dire a Gionata: Io non solamente farò questo per te e per la tua nazione, ma ingrandirò te, e la tua nazione, quando sarà tempo.
43 Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.	43 Ma adesso mi farai piacere a mandar gente in mio aiuto, perché tutto il mio esercito mi ha lasciato.
44 Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.	44 E Gionata gli mandò ad Antiochia tremila uomini valorosi, e giunti che furono, il re ebbe gran contento della loro venuta.
45 Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.	45 Ma si adunarono cento venti mila uomini di quella città, che volevano uccidere il re.
46 Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.	46 E il re si rifugio nella reggia: e quelli della città si fecer padroni delle strade, e cominciarono a combattere.
47 Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.	47 E il re chiamò in suo aiuto i Giudei, i quali si radunarono tutti presso a lui, e si avanzaron tutti per varie parti della città.
48 Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.	48 E ucciser quel giorno cento mila uomini della città, e vi messero il fuoco, e fecero gran bottino in quel giorno, e liberarono il re.
49 So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,	49 E quelli della città vedendo come i Giudei erano padroni assoluti della città, si sbigottirono, e chiesero misericordia al re, dicendo:
50 Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.	50 Porgi a noi la tua destra, e finiscano i Giudei di malltattar noi e la città.
51 With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.	51 E gettaron le armi, e fecer la pace: e i Giudei acquistaron molta gloria nel concetto del re e di tutto il suo regno, e diventarono famosi nel suo regno, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme ricchi di spoglie.
52 So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.	52 E Demetrio fu in sicuro possesso del regno, e tutto il paese in pace lo rispettava.
53 Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.	53 E mancò a tutto quello che avea promessa, e si alienò da Gionata, e non lo trattò come richiedevano i benefizj, che avea da lui ricevuti; ma lo inquietava grandemente.
54 After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.	54 Dopo tali cose tornò Trifone con Antioco ancor fanciullo, il quale si fece re, e si cinse il diadema.
55 Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.	55 E andarono a trovarlo tutti i soldati mandati via da Demetrio; i quali venner alle mani con Demetrio, il quale voltò le spalle, e fuggì.
56 Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.	56 E Trifone prese gli elefanti, ed occupò Antiochia:
57 At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends.	57 E il giovanelto Antioco scrisse a Gionata in questi termini: Io ti confermo nel sacerdozio, e ti fo signore delle quattro città, e ti do luogo tragli amici del re.
58 Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.	58 E mandogli de' vasi di oro per suo servizio, e diegli potestà di bere nell'oro, e di portare la porpora, e di avere la fibbia d'oro:
59 His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.	59 E creò il suo fratello Simone governatore da' confini di Tiro sino a quelli di Egitto.
60 Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.	60 E Gionata si mosse, e andava attorno per le città, che sono di là dal fiume: e tutto l'esercito della Siria venne in suo soccorso: e arrivò ad Ascalon, e gli uscirono incontro quelli della città con onore.
61 From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.	61 E di li andò a Gaza: e quei di Gaza chiusero le porte, ed egli l'assediò e saccheggiò, e diede alle fiamme i luoghi intorno alla città.
62 Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.	62 Ma que' di Gaza si raccomandarono a lui, ed egli porse loro la destra, e prese in ostaggio i loro figliuoli, e mandogli a Gerusalemme, e andò attorno pel paese sino a Damasco.
63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,	63 Ma Gionata intese come i capitani di Demetrio con grosso esercito avean fatto ribellare Cades, che e' nella Galilea, affine di ritrarlo dagli affari del regno:
64 He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.	64 Ed egli si mosse contro di essi; ma lasciò nella provincia Simone suo fratello.
65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:	65 E Simone si avvicinò a Bethsura e l'assediò lungamente, e teneva rinchiusi quei cittadini.
66 But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.	66 E gli domandaron la pace, ed egli la concesse loro; e mandatili via di lì, prese possesso della città, e vi pose presidio.
67 As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.	67 Ma Gionata col suo esercito si avvicinò alle acque di Genesar, e prima del far del dì giunsero nella campagna di Asor:
68 And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.	68 E si vide davanti il campo degli stranieri, i quali gli avean tesa un'imboscata sulla montagna: ed egli andò di fronte per combatterli.
69 So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled;	69 E quelli, che erano nell'imboscata venner fuori dai loro posti, e attaccaron la zuffa.
70 Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.	70 Allora quei di Gionata si dieder tutti a fuggire, né alcun rimase di essi, se non Mathathia figliuolo di Absalom e Giuda figliuolo di Calphi capo dell'esercito.
71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.	71 E Gionata si straccia le vesti, e si gettò della terra sul capo, e fece orazione.
72 Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.	72 Indi tornò Gionata sopra i nemici, e gli sbaragliò e li mise in fuga.
73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.	73 E la gente di lui, che fuggiva, veduto questo, tornarono a lui, e inseguirono tutti insieme il nemico sino a Cades, dove questi avea gli alloggiamenti, e arrivarono sin colà.
74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.	74 E degli stranieri perirono in quel giorno tre mila, e Gionata tornò a Gerusalemme.
