1 Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes upon her head, and uncovered the sackcloth wherewith she was clothed; and about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,	1 Partiti quelli, entrò Giuditta nel suo oratorio, e vestita di cilicio sparse di cenere la sua testa, e prostratasi dinanzi al Signore, a lui alzava sue voci dicendo:
2 O Lord God of my father Simeon, to whom thou gavest a sword to take vengeance of the strangers, who loosened the girdle of a maid to defile her, and discovered the thigh to her shame, and polluted her virginity to her reproach; for thou saidst, It shall not be so; and yet they did so:	2 Signore Dio del padre mio Simeon, il quale gli mettesti in mano la spada per punire quegli stranieri, i quali per infame passione violaromo, e maltrattano una vergine facendole vergogna:
3 Wherefore thou gavest their rulers to be slain, so that they dyed their bed in blood, being deceived, and smotest the servants with their lords, and the lords upon their thrones;	3 Onde le loro donne divenner preda, e le figliuole loro divennero ancelle, e tutte le loro sostanze furono acquisto de servi tuoi, che arsero di zelo dell'onor tuo; dà (ti prego) aiuto a me vedova, o Signore Dio mio.
4 And hast given their wives for a prey, and their daughters to be captives, and all their spoils to be divided among thy dear children; which were moved with thy zeal, and abhorred the pollution of their blood, and called upon thee for aid: O God, O my God, hear me also a widow.	4 Perchè da te quelle cose furon fatte in antico, e altre ne ideasti dopo di quelle; e quello fu che tu volesti.
5 For thou hast wrought not only those things, but also the things which fell out before, and which ensued after; thou hast thought upon the things which are now, and which are to come.	5 Imperocchè tutte a te sono aperte le vie,e i tuoi giudizj gli hai fondati nella tua providenza.
6 Yea, what things thou didst determine were ready at hand, and said, Lo, we are here: for all thy ways are prepared, and thy judgments are in thy foreknowledge.	6 Volgi adesso lo sguardo sopra gli alloggiamenti degli Assiri, come una volta ti degnasti di volgerlo sopra gli alloggiamenti degli Egiziani, allorchè armati correvano dietro a tuoi servi confidati nei loro cocchi, e ne lor cavalieri, e nella moltitudine de combattenti.
7 For, behold, the Assyrians are multiplied in their power; they are exalted with horse and man; they glory in the strength of their footmen; they trust in shield, and spear, and bow, and sling; and know not that thou art the Lord that breakest the battles: the Lord is thy name.	7 Ma tu gettasti lo sguardo sopra i loro allogiamenti, e furono involti nelle tenebre.
8 Throw down their strength in thy power, and bring down their force in thy wrath: for they have purposed to defile thy sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle where thy glorious name resteth and to cast down with sword the horn of thy altar.	8 L'abisso arrestò i loro passi, e le acque li ricopersero.
9 Behold their pride, and send thy wrath upon their heads: give into mine hand, which am a widow, the power that I have conceived.	9 Lo stesso sia di costoro, o Signore, i quali confidano nella lor moltitudine, e de' loro cocchi, e delle lance, e degli scudi, e delle frecce, e delle aste si gloriano.
10 Smite by the deceit of my lips the servant with the prince, and the prince with the servant: break down their stateliness by the hand of a woman.	10 Ed essi non hanno, come Dio nostro se tu, il quale fin ab antico struggi gli eserciti, e ti nomi il Signore.
11 For thy power standeth not in multitude nor thy might in strong men: for thou art a God of the afflicted, an helper of the oppressed, an upholder of the weak, a protector of the forlorn, a saviour of them that are without hope.	11 Alza il tuo braccio, come già altre volte, e colla tua virtù conquidi la loro possanza vada a terra ai colpi dell'ira tua il poter di costoro; i quali si promettono di violare il tuo Santuario, di contaminare il tabernacolo, che porta il tuo nome, e di recidere colla spada il corno del tuo altare.
12 I pray thee, I pray thee, O God of my father, and God of the inheritance of Israel, Lord of the heavens and earth, Creator of the waters, king of every creature, hear thou my prayer:	12 Fa, Signore, che la sua propria spada serva a troncare la sua superbia:
13 And make my speech and deceit to be their wound and stripe, who have purposed cruel things against thy covenant, and thy hallowed house, and against the top of Sion, and against the house of the possession of thy children.	13 I suoi occhi sieno il laccio, al quale egli sia preso da me, e tu lo percuoterai colle affettuose parole della mia bocca.
14 And make every nation and tribe to acknowledge that thou art the God of all power and might, and that there is none other that protecteth the people of Israel but thou.	14 Dà al mio spirito fermezza per disprezzarlo, e virtù per abbatterlo.
	15 Imperocchè monumento al tuo nome sarà, che lo abbia steso al suolo la mano di una donna.
	16 Imperocchè non sta il tuo potere nelle molte schiere, nè ti ti compiaci nelle forze dei cavalieri: e ab antico dispiacquero a te i superbi, ma gradisti mai sempre l'orazione degli umili, e de mansueti.
	17 Dio de'cieli, creatore delle acque, e Signore di tutte le creature, esaudisci me miserabile, che a te ricorro, e tutto spero dalla tua misericordia.
	18 Ricordati, Signore, della tua alleanza, metti in bocca a me le parole, e fortifica il mio cuore in questa impresa, affinchè la tua casa resti sempre santificata al tuo culto.
	19 E le genti tutte conoscano, come Dio se tu, e altro non havvenne fuori di te.
