1 Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes upon her head, and uncovered the sackcloth wherewith she was clothed; and about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,	1 Allora Giuditta cadde con la faccia a terra e sparse cenere sul capo e mise allo scoperto il sacco di cui sotto era rivestita e, nell'ora in cui veniva offerto nel tempio di Dio in Gerusalemme l'incenso della sera, Giuditta supplicò a gran voce il Signore:
2 O Lord God of my father Simeon, to whom thou gavest a sword to take vengeance of the strangers, who loosened the girdle of a maid to defile her, and discovered the thigh to her shame, and polluted her virginity to her reproach; for thou saidst, It shall not be so; and yet they did so:	2 "Signore, Dio del padre mio Simeone, tu hai messo nella sua mano la spada della vendetta contro gli stranieri, contro coloro che avevano sciolto a ignominia la cintura d'una vergine, ne avevano denudato i fianchi a vergogna e ne avevano contaminato il grembo a infamia. Tu avevi detto: non si deve fare tal cosa! ma essi l'hanno fatta.
3 Wherefore thou gavest their rulers to be slain, so that they dyed their bed in blood, being deceived, and smotest the servants with their lords, and the lords upon their thrones;	3 Per questo hai consegnato alla morte i loro capi e al sangue quel loro giaciglio, macchiato del loro inganno, ripagato con l'inganno; hai abbattuto i servi con i loro capi e i capi sui loro troni.
4 And hast given their wives for a prey, and their daughters to be captives, and all their spoils to be divided among thy dear children; which were moved with thy zeal, and abhorred the pollution of their blood, and called upon thee for aid: O God, O my God, hear me also a widow.	4 Hai destinato le loro mogli alla preda, le loro figlie alla schiavitù, tutte le loro spoglie alla divisione tra i tuoi figli diletti, perché costoro, accesi del tuo zelo, erano rimasti inorriditi della profanazione del loro sangue e a te avevano gridato chiamandoti in aiuto. Dio, Dio mio, ascolta anche me che sono vedova.
5 For thou hast wrought not only those things, but also the things which fell out before, and which ensued after; thou hast thought upon the things which are now, and which are to come.	5 Tu hai preordinato ciò che precedette quei fatti e i fatti stessi e ciò che seguì. Tu hai disposto le cose presenti e le future e quello che tu hai pensato si è compiuto.
6 Yea, what things thou didst determine were ready at hand, and said, Lo, we are here: for all thy ways are prepared, and thy judgments are in thy foreknowledge.	6 Le cose da te deliberate si sono presentate e hanno detto: Ecco ci siamo; perché tutte le tue vie sono preparate e i tuoi giudizi sono preordinati.
7 For, behold, the Assyrians are multiplied in their power; they are exalted with horse and man; they glory in the strength of their footmen; they trust in shield, and spear, and bow, and sling; and know not that thou art the Lord that breakest the battles: the Lord is thy name.	7 Or ecco gli Assiri hanno aumentato la moltitudine dei loro eserciti, vanno in superbia per i loro cavalli e i cavalieri, si vantano della forza dei loro fanti, poggiano la loro speranza sugli scudi e sulle lance, sugli archi e sulle fionde e ignorano che tu sei il Signore che disperdi le guerre;
8 Throw down their strength in thy power, and bring down their force in thy wrath: for they have purposed to defile thy sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle where thy glorious name resteth and to cast down with sword the horn of thy altar.	8 Signore è il tuo nome. Abbatti la loro forza con la tua potenza e rovescia la loro violenza con la tua ira: fanno conto di profanare il tuo santuario, di contaminare la Dimora ove riposa il tuo nome e la tua gloria, di abbattere con il ferro il corno del tuo altare.
9 Behold their pride, and send thy wrath upon their heads: give into mine hand, which am a widow, the power that I have conceived.	9 Guarda la loro superbia, fa' scendere la tua ira sulle loro teste; infondi a questa vedova la forza di fare quello che ho deciso.
10 Smite by the deceit of my lips the servant with the prince, and the prince with the servant: break down their stateliness by the hand of a woman.	10 Con l'inganno delle mie labbra abbatti il servo con il suo padrone e il padrone con il suo ministro; spezza la loro alterigia per mezzo di una donna.
11 For thy power standeth not in multitude nor thy might in strong men: for thou art a God of the afflicted, an helper of the oppressed, an upholder of the weak, a protector of the forlorn, a saviour of them that are without hope.	11 Perché la tua forza non sta nel numero, né sugli armati si regge il tuo regno: tu sei invece il Dio degli umili, sei il soccorritore dei derelitti, il rifugio dei deboli, il protettore degli sfiduciati, il salvatore dei disperati.
12 I pray thee, I pray thee, O God of my father, and God of the inheritance of Israel, Lord of the heavens and earth, Creator of the waters, king of every creature, hear thou my prayer:	12 Sì, sì, Dio del padre mio e di Israele tua eredità, Signore del cielo e della terra, creatore delle acque, re di tutte le tue creature, ascolta la mia preghiera;
13 And make my speech and deceit to be their wound and stripe, who have purposed cruel things against thy covenant, and thy hallowed house, and against the top of Sion, and against the house of the possession of thy children.	13 fa' che la mia parola e l'inganno diventino piaga e flagello di costoro, che fanno progetti crudeli contro la tua alleanza e il tuo tempio consacrato, contro il monte elevato di Sion e la sede dei tuoi figli.
14 And make every nation and tribe to acknowledge that thou art the God of all power and might, and that there is none other that protecteth the people of Israel but thou.	14 Da' a tutto il tuo popolo e ad ogni tribù la prova che sei tu il Signore, il Dio d'ogni potere e d'ogni forza e non c'è altri fuori di te, che possa proteggere la stirpe d'Israele".
