KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.1 Hiram, king of Tyre, sent envoys to David along with masons and carpenters, and cedar wood to build him a house.
And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.2 David now understood that the LORD had truly confirmed him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was greatly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.3 David took other wives in Jerusalem and became the father of more sons and daughters.
Now these are the names of his children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,4 These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
And Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
And Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.7 Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.
And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.8 When the Philistines had heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, they went up in unison to seek him out. But when David heard of this, he marched out against them.
And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.9 Meanwhile the Philistines had come and raided the valley of Rephaim.
And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.10 David inquired of God, "Shall I advance against the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my power?" The LORD answered him, "Advance, for I will deliver them into your power."
So they came up to Baal-perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.11 They advanced, therefore, to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, "God has used me to break through my enemies just as water breaks through a dam." Therefore that place was called Baal-perazim.
And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.12 The Philistines had left their gods there, and David ordered them to be burnt.
And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.13 Once again the Philistines raided the valley,
Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.14 and again David inquired of God. But God answered him: "Do not try to pursue them, but go around them and come upon them from the direction of the mastic trees.
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mastic trees, then go forth to battle, for God has already gone before you to strike the army of the Philistines."
David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.16 David did as God commanded him, and they routed the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.
And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.17 Thus David's fame was spread abroad through every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.
