KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.1 The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.2 She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.3 Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:4 while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.
But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.5 But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?6 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.7 If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.8 Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?9 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.10 'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;11 Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.12 When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.13 Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.14 Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.15 'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.16 Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.17 Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.18 Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.19 Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.20 Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.
And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.
And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.22 As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.23 Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.24 Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'
And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.
