1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.	1 Giacobbe adunque abitò nella terra di Canaan, dove suo padre era stato pellegrino.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.	2 E questa è la posterità di lui. Giuseppe all'età di sedici anni, ancor giovinetto, pasceva coi suoi fratelli il gregge, e stava coi figli di Baia e di Zelfa mogli del padre suo, presso il quale accusò i fratelli di un pessi o delitto.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.	3 Or Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti gli altri suoi figlioli, avendolo avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica a vari colori.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.	4 Ma i suoi fratelli l'odiavano, vedendo che egli era amato dal padre più di tutti gli altri figli, e non gli potevan parlare amichevolmente.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.	5 Avvenne poi che Giuseppe riferì ai suoi fratelli un sogno da lui avuto, il che fu causa di maggior odio.
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:	6 Egli disse loro: « Udite il sogno che ho fatto.
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.	7 Mi pareva che si legasse i covoni nel campo, e che il mio covone, quasi alzandosi, stesse ritto, e che i vostri covoni, stando all'intorno, adorassero il mio covone ».
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.	8 Allora i fratelli gli dissero: « Che forse tu sarai nostro re e noi dovremo stare a te soggetti? » Così questi sogni e questi discorsi accrebbero l'invidia e l'odio.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.	9 Egli ebbe ancora un altro sogno, e, raccontandolo ai fratelli, disse: « Mi sembrava, in sogno, che il sole, la luna e undici stelle mi adorassero ».
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?	10 Avendolo raccontato al padre e ai fratelli, suo padre lo sgridò, dicendo: « Che vuol dire questo sogno che hai avuto? Forse che io, tua madre, e i tuoi fratelli, prostrati per terra ti dovremo adorare? ».
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.	11 Mentre per questo i fratelli gli portavano invidia, il padre considerava dentro di sè la cosa.
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.	12 Or mentre i suoi fratelli stavano a pascere i greggi del padre in Sichem,
13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.	13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: « I tuoi fratelli pascolano le pecore in Sichem: vieni, chè ti manderò da loro ». Ed avendo egli risposto:
14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.	14 « Eccomi », Giacobbe gli disse: «Va a vedere se tutto va bene relativamente ai tuoi fratelli e al bestiame, e portami le notizie di quanto si fa ». Mandato dalla valle di Ebron, Giuseppe arrivò a Sichem.
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?	15 Mentre andava errando per i campi, incontrò un uomo il quale gli domandò che cercasse.
16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.	16 Egli rispose: « Cerco i miei fratelli, insegnami dove siano a pascere i greggi ».
17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.	17 Quell'uomo gli rispose: «Sono partiti di qui, e li ho sentiti dire: Andiamo a Dotain ». Allora Giuseppe andò a cercare i suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotain.
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.	18 Essi lo scorsero da lontano, e avanti che s'avvicinasse, disegnarono di ucciderlo,
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.	19 e dicevansi l'uno all'altro: « Ecco, viene il sognatore!
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.	20 Su via, ammazziamolo e gettiamolo in una vecchia cisterna, e poi diremo: Una fiera crudele lo ha divorato; e allora si vedrà a che gli giovino i suoi sogni».
21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.	21 Ma Ruben, udito questo, si sforzava di liberarlo dalle loro mani, e diceva:
22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.	22 « Non lo ammazzate, non versate il suo sangue; ma gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, e serbate pure le vostre mani ». E diceva questo perchè voleva liberarlo dalle loro mani e restituirlo a suo padre.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;	23 Appena dunque Giuseppe giunse dai suoi fratelli, questi lo spogliarono della tunica talare a vari colori,
24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.	24 e lo gettarono nella vecchia cisterna che era senz'acqua.
25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.	25 Postisi poi a sedere per prendere cibo, videro dei viaggiatori Ismaeliti che venivano da Galaad coi cammelli carichi di aromi, di resina e di mirra per l'Egitto.
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?	26 e Allora Giuda disse ai suoi fratelli: « Che guadagneremo a uccidere il nostro fratello e a celarne il sangue?
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.	27 È meglio venderlo agli Ismaeliti, e non imbrattare le nostre mani, perchè egli è nostro fratello e nostra carne ». I suoi fratelli gli diedero ascolto,
28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.	28 e mentre passavano quei mercanti Madianiti, lo trassero dalla cisterna e lo vendettero per venti pezzi d'argento a quegli Ismaeliti, i quali lo condussero in Egitto.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.	29 Or quando Ruben, tornato alla cisterna, non ci trovò più Giuseppe,
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?	30 stracciatesi le vesti, andò a trovare i suoi fratelli e disse: « Il ragazzo non si vede, ed io dove me ne andrò? »
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;	31 Ma quelli, presa la tunica di Giuseppe, la intrisero nel sangue di un capretto da loro ucciso,
32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.	32 e mandarono a portarla al padre e a dirgli: « Abbiamo trovata questa tunica: guarda se è o no quella del tuo figliolo ».
33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.	33 E il padre, avendola riconosciuta, disse: « È la tunica del mio figliolo! Una fiera crudele lo ha mangiato; una bestia ha divorato Giuseppe! »
34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.	34 E stracciatesi le vesti, si copri di cilizio e pianse per molto tempo il suo figlio.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.	35 Tutti i figli si radunarono intorno al padre per lenirne il dolore; ma egli rifiutò d'essere consolato e disse: «Scenderò piangendo dal mio figliolo nel soggiorno dei morti ». E mentre egli perseverava nel pianto,
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.	36 i Madianiti vendettero in Egitto Giuseppe a Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, capitano delle milizie.
