1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.	1 Giacobbe si stabilì nella terra dove suo padre aveva soggiornato.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.	2 Questa è la storia della discendenza di Giacobbe. Giuseppe, all'età di diciassette anni, pascolava il gregge con i suoi fratelli. Siccome era giovinetto, stava con i figli di Bila e i figli di Zilpa, mogli di suo padre. Giuseppe riportò al loro padre la mala fama che circolava sul loro conto.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.	3 Israele amava Giuseppe più che tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio della sua vecchiaia, e gli fece una tunica con le maniche lunghe.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.	4 Ma i suoi fratelli videro che il loro padre amava lui più che tutti i suoi figli, e presero a odiarlo e non potevano parlargli amichevolmente.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.	5 Or Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai fratelli, ond'essi lo odiarono ancor di più.
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:	6 Disse dunque a loro: "Ascoltate questo sogno che ho fatto.
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.	7 Ecco, noi stavamo legando dei covoni in mezzo alla campagna, quand'ecco il mio covone si rizzò e restò diritto, e i vostri covoni stettero tutt'attorno e si prostrarono davanti al mio covone".
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.	8 Gli dissero i suoi fratelli: "Dovrai tu per caso regnare su di noi o dominare?". E continuarono a odiarlo più che mai, a causa dei suoi sogni e delle sue parole.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.	9 Poi fece un altro sogno ancora, lo raccontò ai suoi fratelli, e disse: "Ecco, ho fatto ancora un sogno, sentite: il sole, la luna e undici stelle si prostravano davanti a me".
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?	10 Lo narrò a suo padre e ai suoi fratelli, e suo padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: "Che sogno è questo che hai sognato! Dovremo, forse, io e tua madre e i tuoi fratelli venir a prostrarci fino a terra davanti a te?".
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.	11 I suoi fratelli furono dunque invidiosi di lui, ma suo padre conservò in mente la cosa.
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.	12 Una volta i suoi fratelli andarono a pascolare il gregge di loro padre a Sichem.
13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.	13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: "I tuoi fratelli non stanno forse alla pastura a Sichem? Vieni, ti devo mandare da loro!". Gli rispose: "Eccomi!".
14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.	14 Gli disse: "Va', per favore, a vedere se i tuoi fratelli stanno bene e se va bene il gregge, e poi torna a riferirmi la cosa". Così lo fece partire dalla valle di Ebron, ed egli arrivò a Sichem.
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?	15 Mentr'egli andava errando per la campagna, lo trovò un uomo che gli domandò: "Che cosa cerchi?".
16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.	16 Rispose: "Cerco i miei fratelli. Indicami, per favore, dove siano a pascolare".
17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.	17 Quell'uomo disse: "Hanno tolto le tende di qui, perché ho sentito dire: "Andiamo a Dotan!". Allora Giuseppe andò sulle tracce dei suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotan.
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.	18 Essi lo videro da lontano e, prima che fosse arrivato vicino a loro, macchinarono contro di lui per farlo morire.
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.	19 Si dissero l'un l'altro: "Ecco che arriva l'interprete dei sogni!
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.	20 E adesso, su, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in qualche cisterna! Poi diremo: "Una bestia feroce l'ha divorato!". Così vedremo che ne sarà dei suoi sogni!".
21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.	21 Ma Ruben ascoltò e lo volle liberare dalle loro mani; perciò disse: "Non togliamogli la vita!".
22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.	22 Poi aggiunse: "Non versate del sangue, gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, ma non colpitelo di vostra mano", per liberarlo dalle loro mani e ricondurlo a suo padre.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;	23 Quando Giuseppe fu arrivato presso i suoi fratelli, essi lo spogliarono della sua tunica, quella tunica dalle maniche lunghe ch'egli aveva indosso;
24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.	24 poi lo afferrarono e lo gettarono nella cisterna: era una cisterna vuota, senz'acqua dentro.
25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.	25 Poi si sedettero per mangiar pane; quand'ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro una carovana di Ismaeliti proveniente da Galaad, e i loro cammelli erano carichi di gomma, di balsamo e di resina, che andavano a scaricare in Egitto.
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?	26 Allora Giuda disse ai suoi fratelli: "Che vantaggio c'è che noi uccidiamo nostro fratello e ne nascondiamo il sangue?
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.	27 Su, vendiamolo agli Ismaeliti, e non sia la nostra mano a colpirlo, perché è nostro fratello e carne nostra". I suoi fratelli lo ascoltarono.
28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.	28 Frattanto vennero a passare alcuni mercanti Madianiti. Allora essi tirarono su ed estrassero Giuseppe dalla cisterna e per venti sicli d'argento lo vendettero agl'Ismaeliti. Così fecero pervenire Giuseppe in Egitto.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.	29 Quando Ruben ritornò alla cisterna, non trovò più Giuseppe nella cisterna! Allora egli si stracciò le vesti,
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?	30 ritornò dai suoi fratelli e disse: "Il ragazzo non c'è più, e io, dove andrò io?".
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;	31 Presero allora la tunica di Giuseppe, scannarono un capro e intinsero la tunica nel sangue.
32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.	32 Poi mandarono la tunica dalle maniche lunghe facendola pervenire al loro padre con queste parole: "L'abbiamo trovata; vedi tu se sia la tunica di tuo figlio o no".
33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.	33 Egli la riconobbe e disse: "La tunica di mio figlio! Una mala bestia l'ha divorato... Giuseppe è stato sbranato!".
34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.	34 Giacobbe si stracciò le vesti, si pose un cilicio attorno alle reni e fece lutto sul suo figliolo per molti giorni.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.	35 Allora tutti i suoi figli e le sue figlie vennero a consolarlo, ma egli ricusò d'essere consolato e disse: "No, io voglio scendere in lutto dal figlio mio nella tomba". E il padre suo lo pianse.
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.	36 Intanto i Madianiti lo vendettero in Egitto a Potifar, eunuco del faraone, capo dei cuochi.
