1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.	1 Quant à Jacob, il demeura dans le pays où ses pères avaient séjourné, c’est-à-dire en Canaan.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.	2 Voici maintenant les origines du peuple de Jacob. En ce temps-là Joseph était un adolescent de 17 ans; comme il gardait le petit bétail avec ses frères, les fils de Bila et les fils de Zilpa, les femmes de son père, il pouvait rapporter à son père le mal que l’on disait d’eux.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.	3 Israël préférait Joseph à tous ses autres fils, car il était le fils de sa vieillesse. Il lui avait même fait faire une tunique à manches.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.	4 Ses frères voyaient que leur père le préférait à tous les autres, aussi ils le détestèrent: ils ne pouvaient plus lui parler amicalement.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.	5 Joseph eut un rêve qu’il raconta à ses frères.
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:	6 Il leur dit: “Écoutez le rêve que j’ai eu.
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.	7 Nous étions en train de ramasser les gerbes au milieu des champs, et voici que ma gerbe se dressa debout, toute droite, pendant que vos gerbes tout autour se prosternaient devant la mienne.”
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.	8 Ses frères lui répondirent: “Voudrais-tu par hasard régner sur nous, devenir notre roi et dominer sur nous?” Ils le détestèrent encore plus à cause de ses rêves et de ses interprétations.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.	9 Il eut un autre rêve qu’il raconta encore à ses frères: “J’ai eu un rêve, dit-il: le soleil, la lune et onze étoiles se prosternaient devant moi.”
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?	10 Mais son père le gronda: “Qu’as-tu donc rêvé là! Devrons-nous, moi, ta mère et tes frères, nous prosterner jusqu’à terre devant toi?”
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.	11 Ses frères étaient jaloux de lui, mais son père n’oubliait rien de tout cela.
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.	12 Comme ses frères étaient allés faire paître le troupeau de leur père à Sichem,
13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.	13 Israël dit à Joseph: “Tes frères sont partis vers Sichem pour faire paître le troupeau, il faut que je t’envoie vers eux.” Il répondit: “Me voici!”
14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.	14 Son père lui dit: “Va voir comment se portent tes frères et le troupeau: tu me rapporteras les nouvelles.” Il l’envoya donc de la vallée d’Hébron et Joseph arriva à Sichem.
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?	15 Un homme le rencontra alors qu’il errait dans la campagne et lui demanda: “Que cherches-tu?”
16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.	16 Joseph répondit: “Je cherche mes frères, peux-tu me dire où ils font paître le troupeau?”
17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.	17 L’homme répondit: “Ils sont partis d’ici, et je les ai entendus qui disaient: Allons à Dotan.” Joseph alla donc à la recherche de ses frères et les retrouva à Dotan.
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.	18 Ils l’aperçurent de loin et, avant qu’il n’approche, ils complotèrent contre lui pour le faire mourir.
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.	19 Ils se disaient entre eux: “Voici qu’arrive notre maître en songes!
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.	20 C’est le moment, tuons-le, jetons-le dans une citerne quelconque et nous dirons qu’une bête sauvage l’a dévoré. Nous verrons bien alors à quoi riment ses songes.”
21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.	21 En entendant cela, Ruben voulut le sauver de leurs mains: “Ne le frappons pas à mort,” dit-il.
22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.	22 Ruben ajouta: “Ne répandez pas le sang, jetez-le donc dans cette citerne du désert, mais ne portez pas la main sur lui!” Il disait cela pour le sauver de leurs mains, pour le renvoyer à son père.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;	23 Dès que Joseph arriva auprès de ses frères, ils lui arrachèrent la tunique à manches qu’il portait.
24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.	24 Puis ils le prirent et le jetèrent dans la citerne. La citerne était vide: il n’y avait plus d’eau dedans.
25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.	25 Ils s’étaient assis pour prendre leur repas quand, levant les yeux, ils aperçurent une caravane d’Ismaélites qui arrivait de Galaad. Leurs chameaux étaient chargés de résine et de parfums précieux qu’ils transportaient en Égypte.
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?	26 Alors Juda dit à ses frères: “Que gagnerons-nous à tuer notre frère et à cacher son sang?
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.	27 Vendons-le aux Ismaélites plutôt que de le tuer, car il est notre frère!” Ses frères l’écoutèrent.
28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.	28 Des marchands de Madian passaient par là. Ses frères retirèrent Joseph, le firent remonter de la citerne et le vendirent aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent. Ceux-ci emmenèrent Joseph en Égypte.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.	29 Lorsque Ruben revint à la citerne, Joseph n’y était plus: il en déchira ses vêtements!
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?	30 Puis il revint dire à ses frères: “Le garçon n’est plus là, que vais-je devenir?”
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;	31 Ils prirent alors la tunique de Joseph, égorgèrent un bouc et plongèrent la tunique dans son sang.
32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.	32 Puis ils envoyèrent la tunique à manches et la firent parvenir à leur père en disant: “Voici ce que nous avons trouvé. Regarde! N’est-ce pas la tunique de ton fils?”
33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.	33 Jacob la reconnut: “C’est la tunique de mon fils, dit-il, une bête féroce l’aura dévoré, Joseph a été mis en pièces!”
34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.	34 Jacob déchira ses vêtements, il s’habilla d’un sac et fit le deuil de son fils durant de longs jours.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.	35 Tous ses fils et toutes ses filles venaient pour le consoler, mais il refusait de se consoler, car il disait: “Je garderai le deuil jusqu’à ce que j’aille rejoindre mon fils au séjour des morts.” Et son père le pleura.
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.	36 Quant aux Madianites, ils vendirent Joseph en Égypte à Putifar, un fonctionnaire chef des gardes dans le palais du Pharaon.
