And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.1 Allora, quando Isacco era diventato vecchio e gli occhi gli si erano troppo indeboliti per poter vedere, egli chiamò Esaù suo figlio maggiore e gli disse: «Figlio mio!» Quegli rispose: «Eccomi».
And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:2 Egli riprese: «Vedi che io sono vecchio: ignoro il giorno della mia morte.
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;3 Ebbene, prendi le tue armi, la tua faretra e il tuo arco ed esci nella campagna a prendermi della selvaggina.
And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.4 Poi preparami un piatto gustoso come piace a me e portami da mangiare, perché la mia anima ti benedica prima di morire».
And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.5 Ora Rebecca ascoltava, mentre Isacco parlava a Esaù suo figlio. Andò dunque Esaù in campagna a caccia di selvaggina per suo padre.
And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,6 Intanto Rebecca disse a Giacobbe suo figlio: «Bada, ho sentito tuo padre fare questo discorso a Esaù tuo fratello:
Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.7 “Portami della selvaggina e preparami un piatto gustoso da mangiare, poi ti benedirò davanti a Jahvè prima della mia morte”.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.8 Ebbene, figlio mio, ubbidisci alla mia voce in ciò che ti comando.
Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:9 Va’ subito al gregge e prendimi di là due bei capretti; io poi ne farò un piatto gustoso per tuo padre come piace a lui.
And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.10 Così tu lo porterai a tuo padre da mangiare, perché ti benedica prima della sua morte».
And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:11 Rispose Giacobbe a Rebecca sua madre: «Bada che Esaù mio fratello è un uomo peloso, mentre io sono di pelle liscia.
My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.12 Forse mio padre mi toccherà e io farò la figura di chi si prende gioco di lui e attirerò sopra di me una maledizione invece di una benedizione!»
And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.13 Ma la madre gli disse: «Sia sopra di me la tua maledizione, figlio mio! Tu ubbidisci soltanto e va’ a prendermi quanto ho detto».
And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.14 Allora egli andò a prendere i capretti e li portò alla madre; così sua madre ne fece un piatto gustoso come piaceva al padre.
And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:15 Poi Rebecca prese le migliori vesti di Esaù figlio maggiore, che erano in casa presso di lei, e ne vestì Giacobbe figlio minore,
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:16 mentre con pelli di capretti aveva rivestito le braccia di lui e la parte liscia del suo collo.
And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.17 Poi mise in mano a Giacobbe suo figlio il piatto gustoso e il pane che aveva, preparato.
And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?18 Così egli venne dal padre e disse: «Padre mio». Rispose: «Eccomi, chi sei tu, figlio mio?»
And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.19 Giacobbe rispose al padre: «Io sono Esaù tuo primogenito. Ho fatto come tu mi hai detto. Alzati dunque, siediti e mangia della mia cacciagione, perché poi mi benedica la tua anima».
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.20 Isacco disse al figlio: «Come hai fatto presto a trovarla, figlio mio!» Rispose: «Jahvè me l’ha fatta capitare davanti».
And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.21 Ma disse Isacco a Giacobbe: «Avvicinati e lascia che ti tocchi, figlio mio, per sapere se tu sei proprio Esaù mio figlio o no».
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.22 Giacobbe si avvicinò a Isacco suo padre che lo toccò e disse: «La voce è la voce di Giacobbe, ma le braccia sono le braccia di Esaù».
And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.23 Così non lo riconobbe, perché le braccia di lui erano pelose come le braccia di Esaù suo fratello, e si accinse a benedirlo.
And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.24 Gli disse dunque: «Tu sei proprio Esaù mio figlio?» Rispose: «Lo sono».
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.25 Allora disse: «Porgimi da mangiare della cacciagione di mio figlio, affinché ti benedica la mia anima». Quegli gliene porse ed egli mangiò; gli offrì vino ed egli bevve.
And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.26 Poi Isacco suo padre gli disse: «Vieni qui vicino e baciami, figlio mio!»
And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:27 Gli si avvicinò e lo baciò. Egli allora aspirò l’odore delle vesti di lui, lo benedisse e disse: «Ecco, l’odore di mio figlio è come l’odore di una campagna che Jahvè ha benedetto.
Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:28 Dio ti doni rugiada del cielo e pingui regioni della terra e abbondanza di frumento e di mosto.
Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.29 Ti servano i popoli e si prostrino innanzi a te le genti. Sii padrone dei tuoi fratelli e si prostrino innanzi a te i figli di tua madre. Sia maledetto chi ti maledice e sia benedetto chi ti benedice!»
And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.30 Ora, quando Isacco ebbe finito di benedire Giacobbe e Giacobbe si era appena allontanato da Isacco suo padre, ecco Esaù suo fratello arrivare dalla caccia.
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.31 Anche lui preparò un piatto gustoso, poi lo portò al padre e gli disse: «Si alzi mio padre e mangi della cacciagione di suo figlio, perché poi mi benedica la tua anima».
And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.32 Gli disse Isacco suo padre: «Chi sei tu?» Rispose: «Io sono Esaù, il tuo figlio primogenito».
And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.33 Allora Isacco fu scosso da un tremito violento e disse: «Chi ha preso della cacciagione e me l’ha portata? E io ho mangiato tranquillamente e poi l’ho benedetto, e resterà benedetto!»
And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.34 Quando Esaù sentì le parole del padre, scoppiò in un grido di grande dolore e molto amaro. Poi disse al padre: «Benedici anche me, padre mio!»
And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.35 Rispose: «È venuto tuo fratello con inganno e ha carpito la tua benedizione».
And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?36 Riprese Esaù: «Non è a ragione che si chiama Giacobbe? Mi ha soppiantato già due volte; si è già preso la mia primogenitura ed ecco, ora ha carpito la mia benedizione!» Poi soggiunge: «Non hai in serbo qualche benedizione per me?»
And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?37 Isacco rispose e disse a Esaù: «Ecco, io l’ho costituito tuo signore e gli ho dato come servitori tutti i suoi fratelli; l’ho sostenuto con frumento e mosto; e per te che cosa mai potrò fare, figlio mio?»
And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.38 Esaù disse al padre: «Hai una sola benedizione, padre mio? Benedici anche me, padre mio!» Ma Isacco taceva ed Esaù alzò la voce e pianse.
And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;39 Allora Isacco suo padre prese la parola e gli disse: «Ecco, lungi dalle pingui regioni della terra sarà la tua sede, lungi dalla rugiada del cielo superiore.
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.40 Vivrai della tua spada e servirai tuo fratello; ma quando ti riscuoterai, tu spezzerai il suo giogo dal collo».
And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.41 Esaù prese allora a osteggiare Giacobbe per la benedizione che suo padre gli aveva dato e disse Esaù nel suo cuore: «Si avvicinano i giorni del lutto per mio padre; allora ucciderò Giacobbe mio fratello».
And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.42 Ma furono riferite a Rebecca le parole di Esaù figlio maggiore ed essa mandò a chiamare Giacobbe figlio minore e gli disse: «Bada che Esaù tuo fratello vuole vendicarsi di te uccidendoti.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;43 Ebbene, figlio mio, ubbidisci alla mia voce: su, fuggi a Kharran da Labano mio fratello.
And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away;44 Rimarrai con lui qualche tempo, finché l'ira di tuo fratello non si sarà calmata,
Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?45 finché non si sarà stornata da te la collera di tuo fratello e non avrà dimenticato quanto gli hai fatto. Allora io manderò a prenderti di là. Perché dovrei venire privata di voi due in un sol giorno?»,
And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?46 Poi Rebecca disse a Isacco: «Mi viene in uggia la vita a causa di queste donne hittite: se Giacobbe sposa qualche donna hittita come queste, qualcuna delle figlie del paese, a che cosa mi serve la vita?»
