| 1 Josué convoqua les Rubénites, les Gadites et la demi-tribu de Manassé | 1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, |
| 2 et leur dit: "Vous avez observé tout ce que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a ordonné, et vous avezécouté ma voix chaque fois que je vous ai donné un ordre. | 2 and said to them, "You have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you; |
| 3 Vous n'avez pas abandonné vos frères, depuis longtemps jusqu'aujourd'hui, gardant l'observance ducommandement de Yahvé votre Dieu. | 3 you have not forsaken your brethren these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the LORD your God. |
| 4 Maintenant Yahvé votre Dieu a procuré à vos frères le repos qu'il leur avait promis. Retournez doncà vos tentes, au pays où vous vous êtes fixés et que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a donné au-delà duJourdain. | 4 And now the LORD your God has given rest to your brethren, as he promised them; therefore turn and go to your home in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan. |
| 5 Seulement, prenez bien soin de mettre en pratique le commandement et la Loi que Moïse, serviteurde Yahvé, vous a prescrits: d'aimer Yahvé votre Dieu, de suivre toujours ses voies, d'observer sescommandements, de vous attacher à lui et de le servir de tout votre coeur et de toute votre âme." | 5 Take good care to observe the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul." |
| 6 Josué les bénit et les renvoya; et ils s'en allèrent à leurs tentes. | 6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their homes. |
| 7 Moïse avait donné à une moitié de la tribu de Manassé un territoire en Bashân; à la seconde moitié,Josué en donna un autre au milieu de ses frères, sur la rive occidentale du Jourdain. Comme il les renvoyait àleurs tentes, Josué les bénit | 7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan; but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brethren in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, |
| 8 et leur dit: "Vous retournerez à vos tentes avec de grandes richesses, du bétail à foison, de l'argent,de l'or, du bronze, du fer et des vêtements en très grande quantité; partagez avec vos frères les dépouilles de vosennemis." | 8 he said to them, "Go back to your homes with much wealth, and with very many cattle, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren." |
| 9 Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad s'en retournèrent avec la demi-tribu de Manassé et quittèrent lesIsraélites à Silo, dans le pays de Canaan, pour s'en aller au pays de Galaad où ils s'étaient fixés, suivant l'ordre deYahvé transmis par Moïse. | 9 So the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the LORD through Moses. |
| 10 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés aux cercles de pierres du Jourdain, qui sont au pays de Canaan, les fils deRuben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé bâtirent là un autel sur le bord du Jourdain, un autel de grandeapparence. | 10 And when they came to the region about the Jordan, that lies in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of great size. |
| 11 Le fait parvint aux oreilles des Israélites. Voici, disait-on, que les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et lademi-tribu de Manassé ont construit cet autel, du côté du pays de Canaan, vers les cercles de pierres du Jourdain,sur la rive des Israélites. | 11 And the people of Israel heard say, "Behold, the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel." |
| 12 A cette nouvelle toute la communauté des Israélites se réunit à Silo pour marcher contre eux et leurfaire la guerre. | 12 And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh, to make war against them. |
| 13 Les Israélites envoyèrent auprès des fils de Ruben, des fils de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé,au pays de Galaad, le prêtre Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar, | 13 Then the people of Israel sent to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, |
| 14 et avec lui dix notables, un notable par famille pour chaque tribu d'Israël, chacun d'eux étant chef desa famille parmi les clans d'Israël. | 14 and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. |
| 15 Parvenus chez les fils de Ruben, chez les fils de Gad et dans la demi-tribu de Manassé au pays deGalaad, ils leur dirent: | 15 And they came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them, |
| 16 "Ainsi parle toute la communauté de Yahvé: Que signifie cette infidélité que vous avez commiseenvers le Dieu d'Israël, vous détournant aujourd'hui de Yahvé et vous bâtissant un autel, ce qui est aujourd'huiune rébellion contre Yahvé? | 16 "Thus says the whole congregation of the LORD, 'What is this treachery which you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the LORD, by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the LORD? |
| 17 "N'était-ce donc pas assez pour nous du crime de Péor, dont nous n'avons pas encore réussi à nouspurifier jusqu'à présent, en dépit du fléau qui a sévi contre toute la communauté de Yahvé? | 17 Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the LORD, |
| 18 Or vous vous détournez aujourd'hui de Yahvé, et puisqu'aujourd'hui vous vous révoltez contreYahvé, demain sa colère va s'enflammer contre toute la communauté d'Israël. | 18 that you must turn away this day from following the LORD? And if you rebel against the LORD today he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel tomorrow. |
| 19 "Le pays où vous vous êtes fixés est-il impur? Passez dans le pays où s'est fixé Yahvé, là où s'estinstallée sa demeure, et fixez-vous parmi nous. Mais ne vous révoltez pas contre Yahvé et ne nous entraînez pasdans votre rébellion en vous bâtissant un autel rival de l'autel de Yahvé notre Dieu. | 19 But now, if your land is unclean, pass over into the LORD's land where the LORD's tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us; only do not rebel against the LORD, or make us as rebels by building yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God. |
| 20 Lorsque Akân, fils de Zérah, fut infidèle dans l'affaire de l'anathème, la Colère n'atteignit-elle pas lacommunauté d'Israël entière, quoiqu'il ne fût qu'un seul individu? Ne dut-il pas mourir pour son crime?" | 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.'" |
| 21 Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé, prenant la parole, répondirent auxchefs des clans d'Israël: | 21 Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel, |
| 22 "Le Dieu des dieux, Yahvé, le Dieu des dieux, Yahvé le sait bien, et Israël doit le savoir: s'il y a eude notre part rébellion ou infidélité à l'égard de Yahvé, qu'il refuse de nous sauver aujourd'hui, | 22 "The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith toward the LORD, spare us not today |
| 23 et si nous avons bâti un autel pour nous détourner de Yahvé et pour y offrir l'holocauste etl'oblation, ou pour y faire des sacrifices de communion, que Yahvé en demande compte! | 23 for building an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or cereal offerings or peace offerings on it, may the LORD himself take vengeance. |
| 24 En vérité, c'est par un souci motivé que nous avons agi ainsi: Demain, vos fils pourraient dire auxnôtres: Qu'y a-t-il de commun entre vous et Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël? | 24 Nay, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? |
| 25 Yahvé n'a-t-il pas mis entre nous et vous, fils de Ruben et fils de Gad, une frontière qui est leJourdain? Vous n'avez aucune part sur Yahvé. Ainsi vos fils seraient cause que les nôtres cesseraient de craindreYahvé. | 25 For the LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites; you have no portion in the LORD.' So your children might make our children cease to worship the LORD. |
| 26 "Aussi nous sommes-nous dit: Bâtissons-nous cet autel destiné non à des holocaustes ni à d'autressacrifices, | 26 Therefore we said, 'Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, |
| 27 mais à servir de témoin entre nous et vous et entre nos descendants après nous, attestant qu'oncélèbre le culte de Yahvé avec nos holocaustes, nos victimes et nos sacrifices de communion en sa présence. Vosfils ne pourront donc pas dire demain aux nôtres: Vous n'avez aucune part sur Yahvé! | 27 but to be a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, that we do perform the service of the LORD in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings; lest your children say to our children in time to come, "You have no portion in the LORD."' |
| 28 Et nous nous sommes dit: S'il leur arrivait toutefois de dire cela soit à nous-mêmes, soit demain ànos descendants, nous répondrions: Regardez la bâtisse de l'autel de Yahvé que nos pères ont fait, non en vued'holocaustes ou d'autres sacrifices, mais comme un témoin entre nous et vous. | 28 And we thought, If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, 'Behold the copy of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.' |
| 29 Loin de nous de nous révolter contre Yahvé et de nous détourner aujourd'hui de derrière Yahvé enbâtissant, pour y offrir holocaustes, oblations ou sacrifices, un autel rival de l'autel de Yahvé notre Dieu, érigédevant sa demeure." | 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn away this day from following the LORD by building an altar for burnt offering, cereal offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the LORD our God that stands before his tabernacle!" |
| 30 Quand le prêtre Pinhas, les notables de la communauté et les chefs des clans d'Israël quil'accompagnaient eurent entendu les paroles prononcées par les fils de Gad, les fils de Ruben et les fils deManassé, ils les approuvèrent. | 30 When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the Reubenites and the Gadites and the Manassites spoke, it pleased them well. |
| 31 Alors le prêtre Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar, dit aux fils de Ruben, aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Manassé:"Nous savons aujourd'hui que Yahvé est au milieu de nous, puisque vous n'avez pas commis une telle infidélité àson égard; dès lors, vous avez préservé les Israélites du châtiment de Yahvé." | 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the Manassites, "Today we know that the LORD is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this treachery against the LORD; now you have saved the people of Israel from the hand of the LORD." |
| 32 Le prêtre Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar, et les notables, ayant quitté les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad,revinrent du pays de Galaad dans le pays de Canaan, auprès des Israélites auxquels ils rapportèrent la réponse. | 32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. |
| 33 La chose plut aux Israélites; les Israélites rendirent grâces à Dieu et ne parlèrent plus de montercontre eux pour leur faire la guerre et ravager le pays habité par les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad. | 33 And the report pleased the people of Israel; and the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them, to destroy the land where the Reubenites and the Gadites were settled. |
| 34 Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad appelèrent l'autel..., "car, disaient-ils, il sera un témoin entrenous que c'est Yahvé qui est Dieu." | 34 The Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Witness; "For," said they, "it is a witness between us that the LORD is God." |
