And some coming down from Judea, taught the brethren: That except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses, you cannot be saved.1 Unos que bajaron de Judea se pusieron a enseñar a los hermanos que, si no se circuncidaban conforme al uso de Moisés, no podían salvarse.
And when Paul and Barnabas had no small contest with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of the other side, should go up to the apostles and priests to Jerusalem about this question.2 Esto provocó un altercado y una violenta discusión con Pablo y Bernabé; y se decidió que Pablo, Bernabé y algunos más de entre ellos subieran a Jerusalén a consultar a los apóstoles y presbíteros sobre esta controversia.
They therefore being brought on their way by the church, passed through Phenice, and Samaria, relating the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren.3 Ellos, pues, enviados por la Iglesia provistos de lo necesario, atravesaron Fenicia y Samaría, contando cómo se convertían los gentiles, con lo que causaron gran alegría a todos los hermanos.
And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and by the apostles and ancients, declaring how great things God had done with them.4 Al llegar a Jerusalén, fueron acogidos por la Iglesia, los apóstoles y los presbíteros; ellos contaron lo que Dios había hecho con ellos.
But there arose some of the sect of the Pharisees that believed, saying: They must be circumcised, and be commanded to observe the law of Moses.5 Pero algunos de la secta de los fariseos, que habían abrazado la fe, se levantaron, diciendo: «Es necesario circuncidarlos y ordenarles que guarden la ley de Moisés».
And the apostles and ancients assembled to consider of this matter.6 Los apóstoles y los presbíteros se reunieron a examinar el asunto.
And when there had been much disputing, Peter, rising up, said to them: Men, brethren, you know, that in former days God made choice among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.7 Después de una larga discusión, se levantó Pedro y les dijo: «Hermanos, vosotros sabéis que, desde los primeros días, Dios me escogió entre vosotros para que los gentiles oyeran de mi boca la palabra del Evangelio, y creyeran.
And God, who knoweth the hearts, gave testimony, giving unto them the Holy Ghost, as well as to us;8 Y Dios, que penetra los corazones, ha dado testimonio a favor de ellos dándoles el Espíritu Santo igual que a nosotros.
And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.9 No hizo distinción entre ellos y nosotros, pues ha purificado sus corazones con la fe.
Now therefore, why tempt you God to put a yoke upon the necks of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?10 ¿Por qué, pues, ahora intentáis tentar a Dios, queriendo poner sobre el cuello de esos discípulos un yugo que ni nosotros ni nuestros padres hemos podido soportar?
But by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we believe to be saved, in like manner as they also.11 No; creemos que lo mismo ellos que nosotros nos salvamos por la gracia del Señor Jesús».
And all the multitude held their peace; and they heard Barnabas and Paul telling what great signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.12 Toda la asamblea hizo silencio para escuchar a Bernabé y Pablo, que les contaron los signos y prodigios que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos entre los gentiles.
And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying: Men, brethren, hear me.13 Cuando terminaron de hablar, Santiago tomó la palabra y dijo: «Escuchadme, hermanos:
Simon hath related how God first visited to take of the Gentiles a people to his name.14 Simón ha contado cómo Dios por primera vez se ha dignado escoger para su nombre un pueblo de entre los gentiles.
And to this agree the words of the prophets, as it is written:15 Con esto concuerdan las palabras de los profetas, como está escrito:
After these things I will return, and will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and the ruins thereof I will rebuild, and I will set it up:16 Después de esto volveré y levantaré de nuevo la choza caída de David; levantaré sus ruinas y la pondré en pie,
That the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all nations upon whom my name is invoked, saith the Lord, who doth these things.17 para que los demás hombres busquen al Señor, y todos los gentiles sobre los que ha sido invocado mi nombre: lo dice el Señor, el que hace
To the Lord was his own work known from the beginning of the world.18 que esto sea conocido desde antiguo.
For which cause I judge that they, who from among the Gentiles are converted to God, are not to be disquieted.19 Por eso, a mi parecer, no hay que molestar a los gentiles que se convierten a Dios;
But that we write unto them, that they refrain themselves from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.20 basta escribirles que se abstengan de la contaminación de los ídolos, de las uniones ilegítimas, de animales estrangulados y de la sangre.
For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him in the synagogues, where he is read every sabbath.21 Porque desde tiempos antiguos Moisés tiene en cada ciudad quienes lo predican, ya que es leído cada sábado en las sinagogas».
Then it pleased the apostles and ancients, with the whole church, to choose men of their own company, and to send to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas, who was surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren.22 Entonces los apóstoles y los presbíteros con toda la Iglesia acordaron elegir a algunos de ellos para mandarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé. Eligieron a Judas llamado Barsabás y a Silas, miembros eminentes entre los hermanos,
Writing by their hands: The apostles and ancients, brethren, to the brethren of the Gentiles that are at Antioch, and in Syria and Cilicia, greeting.23 y enviaron por medio de ellos esta carta: «Los apóstoles y los presbíteros hermanos saludan a los hermanos de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia provenientes de la gentilidad.
Forasmuch as we have heard, that some going out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment:24 Habiéndonos enterado de que algunos de aquí, sin encargo nuestro, os han alborotado con sus palabras, desconcertando vuestros ánimos,
It hath seemed good to us, being assembled together, to choose out men, and to send them unto you, with our well beloved Barnabas and Paul:25 hemos decidido, por unanimidad, elegir a algunos y enviároslos con nuestros queridos Bernabé y Pablo,
Men that have given their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.26 hombres que han entregado su vida al nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves also will, by word of mouth, tell you the same things.27 Os mandamos, pues, a Silas y a Judas, que os referirán de palabra lo que sigue:
For it hath seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us, to lay no further burden upon you than these necessary things:28 Hemos decidido, el Espíritu Santo y nosotros, no imponeros más cargas que las indispensables:
That you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which things keeping yourselves, you shall do well. Fare ye well.29 que os abstengáis de carne sacrificada a los ídolos, de sangre, de animales estrangulados y de uniones ilegítimas. Haréis bien en apartaros de todo esto. Saludos».
They therefore being dismissed, went down to Antioch; and gathering together the multitude, delivered the epistle.30 Los despidieron, y ellos bajaron a Antioquía, donde reunieron a la comunidad y entregaron la carta.
Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.31 Al leerla, se alegraron mucho por aquellas palabras alentadoras.
But Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, with many words comforted the brethren, and confirmed them.32 Judas y Silas, que eran también profetas, hablaron largamente, exhortando y confirmando a los hermanos.
And after they had spent some time there, they were let go with peace by the brethren, unto them that had sent them.33 Pasado algún tiempo, fueron despedidos en paz por los hermanos para volver a los que los habían enviado.
But it seemed good unto Silas to remain there; and Judas alone departed to Jerusalem.34 [«Pero a Silas le pareció mejor permanecer allí».]
And Paul and Barnabas continued at Antioch, teaching and preaching, with many others, the word of the Lord.35 Por su parte, Pablo y Bernabé permanecieron en Antioquía, enseñando y anunciando, junto con otros muchos, la Buena Nueva, la palabra del Señor.
And after some days, Paul said to Barnabas: Let us return and visit our brethren in all the cities wherein we have preached the word of the Lord, to see how they do.36 Unos días más tarde, dijo Pablo a Bernabé: «Vayamos de nuevo y visitemos a los hermanos en todas las ciudades en que hemos predicado la palabra de Dios para ver cómo están».
And Barnabas would have taken with them John also, that was surnamed Mark;37 Bernabé quería llevar con ellos a Juan, llamado Marcos,
But Paul desired that he (as having departed from them out of Pamphylia, and not gone with them to the work) might not be received.38 pero Pablo opinaba que no debían tomar consigo al que se había separado de ellos en Panfilia y no les había acompañado en la obra.
And there arose a dissension, so that they departed one from another; and Barnabas indeed taking Mark, sailed to Cyprus.39 Se produjo una gran tensión, hasta el punto de que se separaron el uno del otro: Bernabé, tomando a Marcos, se embarcó para Chipre;
But Paul choosing Silas, departed, being delivered by the brethren to the grace of God.40 por su parte, Pablo, eligiendo como compañero a Silas, y encomendado por los hermanos a la gracia del Señor, partió
And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches, commanding them to keep the precepts of the apostles and the ancients.41 y fue recorriendo Siria y Cilicia, confirmando a las iglesias.
