Give ear to me, you that follow that which is just, and you that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence you are hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you are dug out.1 Escuchadme, los que vais tras la justicia, | los que buscáis al Señor: | Mirad la roca de donde os tallaron, | la cantera de donde os extrajeron.
Look unto Abraham your father, and to Sara that bore you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and multiplied him.2 Mirad a Abrahán, vuestro padre; | a Sara, que os dio a luz: | cuando os llamé, era uno, | pero lo bendije y lo multipliqué.
The Lord therefore will comfort Sion, and will comfort all the ruins thereof: and he will make her desert as a place of pleasure, and her wilderness as the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of praise.3 El Señor consuela a Sión, | consuela todas sus ruinas: | convertirá su desierto en un edén, | su yermo en jardín del Señor; | allí habrá gozo y alegría, | acción de gracias al son de instrumentos.
Hearken unto me, O my people, and give ear to me, O my tribes: for a law shall go forth from me, and my judgment shall rest to be a light of the nations.4 Escuchadme, naciones; pueblos, prestadme oído, | pues de mí saldrá la ley | y estableceré mi derecho | para luz de los pueblos.
My just one is near at hand, my saviour is gone forth, and my arms shall judge the people: the islands shall look for me, and shall patiently wait for my arm.5 Mi triunfo está cercano, | llega mi salvación, | mi brazo regirá a los pueblos: | las islas lejanas esperan en mí, | ponen su esperanza en mi poder.
Lift up your eyes to heaven, and look down to the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish like smoke, and the earth shall be worn away like a garment, and the inhabitants thereof shall perish in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my justice shall not fail.6 Levantad vuestros ojos al cielo, | mirad abajo, hacia la tierra: | el cielo se desvanece como el humo, | la tierra se consume como un vestido, | sus habitantes mueren como langostas, | pero mi salvación dura por siempre, | mi justicia no tendrá fin.
Hearken to me, you that know what is just, my people who have my law in your heart: fear ye not the reproach of men, and be not afraid of their blasphemies.7 Escuchadme, los que conocéis lo que es recto, | el pueblo que conserva mi ley en su corazón: | no temáis la afrenta de los hombres, | no desmayéis por sus ultrajes:
For the worm shall eat them up as a garment: and the moth shall consume them as wool: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my justice from generation to generation,8 pues la polilla los roerá como un vestido, | como los gusanos roen la lana; | pero mi justicia dura por siempre, | mi salvación de edad en edad.
Arise, arise, put on strength, O thou arm of the Lord, arise as in the days of old, in the ancient generations.
Hast not thou dried up the sea, the water of the mighty deep, who madest the depth of the sea a way, that the delivered might pass over?10 ¿No eres tú quien secó el mar, | las aguas del gran océano, | el que hizo un camino en la profundidad del mar | para que pasaran los redimidos?
And now they that are redeemed by the Lord, shall return, and shall come into Sion singing praises, and joy everlasting shall be upon their heads, they shall obtain joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning shall flee away.11 Volverán los rescatados del Señor, | entrarán en Sión con cánticos de júbilo, | alegría perpetua a la cabeza, | siguiéndolos, gozo y alegría; | pena y aflicción se alejarán.
I, I myself will comfort you: who art thou, that thou shouldst be afraid of a mortal man, and of the son of man, who shall wither away like grass?12 Yo, yo soy quien os consuela. | ¿Por qué temes a un mortal que perece, | a un hombre que pasa como la hierba,
And thou hast forgotten the Lord thy maker, who stretched out the heavens, and founded the earth: and thee hast been afraid continually all the day at the presence of his fury who afflicted thee, and had prepared himself to destroy thee: where is now the fury of the oppressor?13 te olvidas del Señor que te ha hecho, | que despliega los cielos | y pone el fundamento de la tierra? | ¿Por qué tiemblas sin tregua cada día | ante el furor del opresor dispuesto a destruirte? | ¿Qué se hizo del furor del opresor?
He shall quickly come that is going to open unto you, and he shall not kill unto utter destruction, neither shall his bread fail.14 Se apresuran a liberar al cautivo: | no morirá en la fosa, no le faltará el pan.
But I am the Lord thy God, who trouble the sea, and the waves thereof swell: the Lord of hosts is my name.15 Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios, | que agita el mar y braman sus olas. | Mi nombre es Señor todopoderoso.
I have put my words in thy mouth, and have protected thee in the shadow of my hand, that thou mightest plant the heavens, and found the earth: and mightest say to Sion: Thou art my people.16 Yo he puesto mis palabras en tu boca, | te cubrí con la sombra de mi mano: | extiendo los cielos, pongo el fundamento de la tierra | y digo a Sión: tú eres mi pueblo.
Arise, arise, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath; thou hast drunk even to the bottom of the cup of dead sleep, and thou hast drunk even to the dregs.17 ¡Despierta, despierta, | ponte en pie, Jerusalén!, | que bebiste de la mano del Señor | la copa de su ira, | apuraste hasta las heces el cáliz de vértigo.
There is none that can uphold her among all the children that she hath brought forth: and there is none that taketh her by the hand among all the children that she hath brought up.18 No hay nadie que la sustente | entre los hijos que dio a luz, | nadie que la lleve de la mano | entre los hijos que crió.
There are two things that have happened to thee: who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword, who shall comfort thee?19 Te han sucedido estos dos males, | ¿quién te compadece? | Saqueo y ruina, hambre y espada, | ¿quién te consuela?
Thy children are cast forth, they have slept at the head of all the ways, as the wild ox that is snared: full of the indignation of the Lord, of the rebuke of thy God.20 Desfallecen y yacen tus hijos | en los rincones de todas las calles, | como antílope en la red, | llenos de la ira del Señor, | de la amenaza de tu Dios.
Therefore hear this, thou poor little one, and thou that art drunk but no with wine.21 Por eso, escucha, desdichada; | borracha, y no de vino.
Thus saith thy Sovereign the Lord and thy God, who will fight for his people: Behold I have taken out of thy hand the cup of dead sleep, the dregs of the cup of my indignation, thou shalt not drink it again any more.22 Esto dice el Señor, tu Dios, | que defiende la causa de su pueblo: | «Yo quito de tu mano la copa del vértigo, | no volverás a beber el cáliz de mi ira.
And I will put it in the hand of them that have oppressed thee, and have said to thy soul: Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as a way to them that went over.23 Lo pondré en la mano de tus verdugos, | de los que te decían: | “Dóblate, que pasemos por encima”; | y tú presentaste la espalda como suelo, | como calzada para los transeúntes».
