1 Great labour is created for all men, and a heavy yoke is upon the children of Adam, from the day of their coming out of their mother's womb, until the day of their burial into the mother of all.	1 Una sorte penosa è disposta per ogni uomo, un giogo pesante grava sui figli di Adamo, dal giorno della loro nascita dal grembo materno al giorno del loro ritorno alla madre comune.
2 Their thoughts, and fears of the heart, their imagination of things to come, and the day of their end:	2 Materia alle loro riflessioni e ansietà per il loro cuore offrono il pensiero di ciò che li attende e il giorno della fine.
3 From him that sitteth on a glorious throne, unto him that is humbled in earth and ashes:	3 Da chi siede su un trono glorioso fino al misero che giace sulla terra e sulla cenere;
4 From him that weareth purple, and beareth the crown, even to him that is covered with rough linen: wrath, envy, trouble, unquietness, and the fear of death, continual anger, and strife,	4 da chi indossa porpora e corona fino a chi è ricoperto di panno grossolano, non c'è che sdegno, invidia, spavento, agitazione, paura della morte, contese e liti.
5 And in the time of rest upon his bed, the sleep of the night changeth his knowledge.	5 Durante il riposo nel letto il sogno notturno turba le sue cognizioni.
6 A little and as nothing is his rest, and afterward in sleep, as in the day of keeping watch.	6 Per un poco, un istante, riposa; quindi nel sonno, come in un giorno di guardia, è sconvolto dai fantasmi del suo cuore, come chi è scampato da una battaglia.
7 He is troubled in the vision of his heart, as if he had escaped in the day of battle. In the time of his safety he rose up, and wondereth that there is no fear:	7 Mentre sta per mettersi in salvo si sveglia, meravigliandosi dell'irreale timore.
8 Such things happen to all flesh, from man even to beast, and upon sinners are sevenfold mere.	8 È sorte di ogni essere vivente, dall'uomo alla bestia, ma per i peccatori sette volte tanto:
9 Moreover, death, and bloodshed, strife, and sword, oppressions, famine, and affliction, and scourges:	9 morte, sangue, contese, spada, disgrazie, fame, calamità, flagelli.
10 All these things are created for the wicked, and for their sakes came the flood.	10 Questi mali sono stati creati per i malvagi, per loro causa si ebbe anche il diluvio.
11 All things that are of the earth, shall return to the earth again, and all waters shall return to the sea.	11 Quanto è dalla terra alla terra ritorna; quanto è dalle acque rifluisce nel mare.
12 All bribery, and injustice shall blotted out, and fidelity shall stand for ever.	12 Ogni regalo per corrompere e l'ingiustizia spariranno, mentre la lealtà resterà sempre.
13 The riches of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, and shall pass sway a noise like a great thunder in rain.	13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si seccheranno come un torrente, come un grande tuono rimbomba via durante la pioggia.
14 While he openeth his hands he shall rejoice: but transgressors shall pine away in the end.	14 Come l'ingiusto aprendo le mani si rallegrerà, così i trasgressori cadranno in rovina.
15 The offspring of the ungodly shall not bring forth many branches, and make a noise as unclean roots upon the top of a rock.	15 La stirpe degli empi non aumenterà i suoi rami, le radici impure saranno sopra una pietra dura.
16 The weed growing over every water, and at the bank of the river, shall be pulled up before all grass.	16 Il giunco su ogni corso d'acqua e sugli argini di un fiume sarà tagliato prima di ogni altra erba.
17 Grace is like a paradise in blessings, and mercy remaineth for ever.	17 La bontà è come un giardino di benedizioni, la misericordia dura sempre.
18 The life of a labourer that is content with what he hath, shall be sweet, and in it thou shalt find a treasure.	18 La vita di chi basta a se stesso e del lavoratore sarà dolce, ma più ancora lo sarà per chi trova un tesoro.
19 Children, and the building of a city shall establish a name, but a blameless wife shall be counted above them both.	19 I figli e la fondazione di una città assicurano un nome, ma più ancora sarà stimata una donna senza macchia.
20 Wine and music rejoice the heart, but the love of wisdom is above them both.	20 Vino e musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più ancora lo rallegra l'amore della sapienza.
21 The flute and the psaltery make a sweet melody, but a pleasant tongue is above them both.	21 Il flauto e l'arpa rendono piacevole il canto, ma più ancora di essi una voce soave.
22 Thy eye desireth favour and beauty, but more than these green sown fields.	22 L'occhio desidera grazia e bellezza, ma più ancora di esse il verde dei campi.
23 A friend and companion meeting together in season, but above them both is a wife with her husband.	23 Il compagno e l'amico si incontrano a tempo opportuno, ma più ancora di essi moglie e marito.
24 Brethren are a help in the time of trouble, but mercy shall deliver more than they.	24 I fratelli e un aiuto servono nell'afflizione, ma più ancora salverà la carità.
25 Gold and silver make the feet stand sure: but wise counsel is above them both.	25 Oro e argento rendono sicuro il piede, ma ancora di più si apprezza un consiglio.
26 Riches and strength lift up the heart: but above these is the fear of the Lord.	26 Ricchezze e potenza sollevano il cuore, ma più ancora di esse il timore del Signore. Con il timore del Signore non manca nulla; con esso non c'è bisogno di cercare aiuto.
27 There is no want in the fear of the Lord, and it needeth not to seek for help.	27 Il timore del Signore è come un giardino di benedizioni; la sua protezione vale più di qualsiasi altra gloria.
28 The fear of the Lord is like a paradise of blessing, and they have covered it above all glory.	28 Figlio, non vivere da mendicante. È meglio morire che mendicare.
29 My son, in thy lifetime be not indigent: for it is better to die than to want.	29 Un uomo che guarda alla tavola altrui ha una vita che non si può chiamar tale. Si contaminerà con cibi stranieri; l'uomo sapiente ed educato se ne guarderà.
30 The life of him that looketh toward another man's table is not to be counted a life: for he feedeth his soul with another man's meat.	30 Nella bocca sarà dolce il mendicare per un impudente, ma nel suo ventre brucerà come fuoco.
31 But a man, well instructed and taught, will look to himself.
32 Begging will be sweet in the mouth of the unwise, but in his belly there shall burn a fire.
