Sirach 18

1 He that liveth for ever created all things together. God only shall be justified, and he remaineth an invincible king for ever.	1 Aquele que vive eternamente, criou todas as coisas, sem excepção. Só o Senhor será reconhecido justo. Ele é o rei invencível que subsiste para sempre.
2 Who is able to declare his works?	2 Quem é capaz de contar as suas obras?
3 For who shall search out his glorious acts?	3 Quem poderá penetrar as suas maravilhas?
4 And who shall shew forth the power of his majesty? or who shall be able to declare his mercy?	4 Quem poderá descrever o poder (soberano) da sua grandeza? Quem empreenderá enumerar as suas misericórdias?
5 Nothing may be taken away, nor added, neither is it possible to find out the glorious works of God:	5 Nada se pode diminuir ou acrescentar, nem é possível compreender as maravilhas de Deus.
6 When a man hath done, then shall he begin: and when he leaveth off, he shall be at a loss.	6 Quando o homem tiver acabado, então estará no começo, e, quando cessar (a pesquisa), ficará perplexo.
7 What is man, and what is his grace? and what is his good, or what is his evil?	7 Que é o homem, e para que presta? E que bem ou que mal pode ele fazer?
8 The number of the days of men at the most are a hundred years: as a drop of water of the sea are they esteemed: and as a pebble of the sand, so are a few years compared to eternity.	8 A duração dos dias do homem, quando muito, é de cem anos, mas, qual gota de água do mar, ou grão de areia, assim são estes poucos anos comparados com o dia da eternidade.
9 Therefore God is patient in them, and poureth forth his mercy upon them.	9 Por isso é que o Senhor é paciente com os homens, e derrama sobre eles a sua misericórdia.
10 He hath seen the presumption of their heart that it is wicked, and hath known their end that it is evil.	10 Ele vê que a presunção do seu coração é má, e reconhece que o seu fim é deplorável.
11 Therefore bath he filled up his mercy in their favour, and hath shewn them the way of justice.	11 Por isso é que os trata com a plenitude da sua doçura, e mostra-lhes o caminho da equidade.
12 The compassion of man is toward his neighbour: but the mercy of God is upon all flesh.	12 A misericórdia do homem tem por objecto o seu próximo, porém a misericórdia de Deus estende-se a todo o ser vivo.
13 He hath mercy, and teacheth, and correcteth, as a shepherd doth his hock.	13 Cheio de compaixão, ensina e disciplina (os homens), como um pastor faz ao seu rebanho.
14 He hath mercy on him that receiveth the discipline of mercy, and that maketh haste in his judgments.	14 Compadece-se daquele que recebe a doutrina da sua misericórdia, e do que se apressa a cumprir os seus mandamentos.
15 My son, in thy good deeds, make no complaint, and when thou givest any thing, add not grief by an evil word.	15 Filho, não mistures a repreensão com o benefício, nem juntes às tuas dádivas a tristeza duma palavra má.
16 Shall not the dew assuage the heat? so also the good word is better than the gift.	16 Porventura o orvalho não mitiga o calor ardente? Assim vale mais a palavra (doce) do que a dádiva.
17 Lo, is not a word better than a gift? but both are with a justified man.	17 Porventura a palavra (doce) não vale mais que o próprio dom? Mas uma e outra coisa se encontra no homem justo.
18 A fool will upbraid bitterly: and a gift of one ill taught consumeth the eyes.	18 O insensato impropera àsperamente; o dom do invejoso consome os olhos.
19 Before judgment prepare thee justice, and learn before thou speak.	19 Antes de Julgar (os outros) procura ser justo, e aprende, antes de falar.
20 Before sickness take a medicine, and before judgment examine thyself, and thou shalt find mercy in the sight of God.	20 Antes da enfermidade emprega cuidados (para a evitar), interroga-te a ti mesmo antes do juízo, e encontrarás misericórdia diante de Deus.
21 Humble thyself before thou art sick, and in the time of sickness shew thy conversation.	21 Humilha-te antes da doença, e mostra o teu proceder no tempo da enfermidade.
22 Let nothing hinder thee from praying always, and be not afraid to be justified even to death: for the reward of God continueth for ever.	22 Nada te embarace de orar sempre, e não te envergonhes de praticar boas obras até à morte, porque a recompensa de Deus dura para sempre.
23 Before prayer prepare thy soul: and be not as a man that tempteth God.	23 Prepara a tua alma antes da oração, e não sejas como um homem que tenta a Deus.
24 Remember the wrath that shall be at the last day, and the time of repaying when he shall turn away his face.	24 Lembra-te da ira do último dia, e do tempo em que Deus castigará, desviando o seu rosto.
25 Remember poverty is the time of abundance, and the necessities of poverty in the day of riches.	25 Lembra-te da pobreza no tempo da abundância, e das necessidades da indigência no dia das riquezas.
26 From the morning until the evening the time shall be changed, and all these are swift in the eyes of God.	26 Desde manhã até à tarde se muda o tempo, e tudo isto se faz num momento aos olhos de Deus.
27 A wise man will fear in every thing, and in the days of sine will beware of sloth.	27 o homem sábio andará com temor em tudo, e nos dias do pecado se guardará da preguiça,
28 Every man of understanding knoweth wisdom, and will give praise to him that findeth her.	28 Todo o homem hábil conhece a sabedoria, e dá louvor ao que a encontrou.
29 They that were of good understanding in words, have also done wisely themselves: and have understood truth and justice, and have poured forth proverbs and judgments.	29 Os homens sensatos nas palavras, obram também com sabedoria, compreendem a verdade e a justiça, e espalham como chuva provérbios e sentenças.
30 Go not after thy lusts, but turn away from thy own will.	30 Não te deixes ir atrás das tuas más tendências e refreia os teus apetites.
31 If thou give to thy soul her desires, she will make thee a joy to thy enemies.	31 Se condescenderes com a tua alma no que deseja, ela fará de ti a alegria dos teus inimigos.
32 Take no pleasure in riotous assemblies, be they ever so small: for their concertation is continual.	32 Não te comprazas em ir às assembleias, mesmo as mais pequenas, porque nelas comete-se incessantemente o mal.
33 Make not thyself poor by borrowing to contribute to feasts when thou hast nothing in thy purse : for thou shalt be an enemy to thy own life.	33 Não te empobreças, pedindo dinheiro emprestado para rivalizares (com os outros em despesas), não tendo tu nada no bolso; isto equivaleria a seres inimigo da tua própria vida.
