¹ Blessed is the man that hath not slipped by a word out of his mouth, and is not pricked with the remorse of sin.	¹ Heil dem Manne, der sich nicht mit seinem Munde verfehlt und der nicht gequält wird vom Kummer über seine Sünden!
² Happy is he that hath had no sadness of his mind, and who is not fallen from his hope.	² Heil dem, den sein Bewußtsein (oder Gewissen) nicht verurteilt und der seiner Hoffnung nicht verlustig gegangen ist!
³ Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold?	³ Für einen knauserigen Menschen ist der Reichtum nicht gut, und wozu dient das Geld einem mißgünstigen (= geizigen) Menschen?
⁴ He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting.	⁴ Wer da sammelt und sichs abdarbt, sammelt für andere, und in seinen Gütern werden andere schwelgen (h).
⁵ He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods.	⁵ Wer gegen sich selbst hartherzig ist, gegen wen sollte der gütig sein? Niemals wird ein solcher seines Geldes froh werden.
⁶ There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness:	⁶ Kein Mensch ist bösartiger, als wer sich selbst nichts gönnt, und gerade dies ist der Lohn für seine Schlechtigkeit.
⁷ And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness.	⁷ Tut er wirklich einmal Gutes, so tut er’s aus Vergeßlichkeit (= Versehen), und zuletzt macht er doch seine Schlechtigkeit offenbar.
⁸ The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul.	⁸ Schlecht ist der mißgünstig Blickende, der sein Angesicht wegwendet (h) und andere Seelen nicht beachtet.
⁹ The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up.	⁹ Des Habgierigen Auge ist mit seinem Anteil (= Besitz) nicht zufrieden, und seine böse Ungerechtigkeit trocknet ihm die Seele aus.
¹⁰ An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table.	¹⁰ Ein böses Auge ist neidisch sogar beim Brot und leidet Mangel am eigenen Tisch.
¹¹ My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings.	¹¹ Mein Sohn, tue dir gütlich nach deinem Vermögen und bringe dem Herrn in gebührender Weise Gaben (= Opfer) dar.
¹² Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die.	¹² Bedenke wohl, daß der Tod nicht säumt und daß der Beschluß der Unterwelt dir nicht kundgetan ist.
¹³ Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor.	¹³ Bevor du stirbst, tue deinem Freunde Gutes, und nach deinem Vermögen reiche dar und gib ihm.
¹⁴ Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee.	¹⁴ Laß keinen guten Tag unbenutzt entschwinden und laß deinen Anteil an einem erlaubten Genuß dir nicht verloren gehen;
¹⁵ Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours?	¹⁵ mußt du nicht einem andern den Ertrag deiner mühsamen Arbeit hinterlassen und dein sauer Erworbenes der Verteilung durchs Los?
¹⁶ Give and take, and justify thy soul.	¹⁶ Gib und nimm an und rede dir selbst zu; denn in der Unterwelt kann man keinem Wohlleben nachgehen.
¹⁷ Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food.	¹⁷ Alles Fleisch (= jedes lebende Geschöpf) wird alt wie ein Gewand; denn von Ewigkeit her besteht das Gesetz: »Du mußt sterben«.
¹⁸ All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree.	¹⁸ Wie die sprossenden Blätter am dichtbelaubten Baume – die einen fallen ab, andere wachsen hervor –: ebenso ist’s mit den Geschlechtern von Fleisch und Blut: das eine stirbt, und ein anderes wird geboren.
¹⁹ Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.	¹⁹ Jedes seiner Werke vermodert (= ist vergänglich) und nimmt ein Ende, und was seine Hände schaffen, folgt ihm nach (g).
²⁰ Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it.	²⁰ Heil dem Manne, der über die Weisheit nachsinnt und mit seiner Einsicht überlegt,
²¹ And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein.	²¹ der die Wege zu ihr in seinem Herzen erwägt und über ihre Geheimnisse nachdenkt,
²² Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God.	²² indem er ihr nachgeht wie ein Späher und an den Wegen lauert, auf denen sie geht,
²³ He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways:	²³ der durch ihre Fenster hineinguckt und an ihren Türen horcht,
²⁴ He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door:	²⁴ der ganz nahe bei ihrer Wohnung Rast hält und seinen Zeltpflock in ihre Wände einschlägt,
²⁵ He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever.	²⁵ sein Zelt aufschlägt ihr zur Seite und so Einkehr hält in guter Herberge,
²⁶ He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches:	²⁶ auch sein Nest in ihrem Laubdach baut (g) und unter ihren Zweigen dauernd weilt:
²⁷ He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory.	²⁷ der wird durch sie vor der Sonnenglut beschirmt und herbergt bei ihr in Herrlichkeit (g).
