DOUAI-RHEIMSKING JAMES BIBLE
Blessed is the man that hath not slipped by a word out of his mouth, and is not pricked with the remorse of sin.1 Blessed is the man that hath not slipped with his mouth, and is not pricked with the multitude of sins.
Happy is he that hath had no sadness of his mind, and who is not fallen from his hope.2 Blessed is he whose conscience hath not condemned him, and who is not fallen from his hope in the Lord.
Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold?3 Riches are not comely for a niggard: and what should an envious man do with money?
He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting.4 He that gathereth by defrauding his own soul gathereth for others, that shall spend his goods riotously.
He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods.5 He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? he shall not take pleasure in his goods.
There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness:6 There is none worse than he that envieth himself; and this is a recompence of his wickedness.
And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness.7 And if he doeth good, he doeth it unwillingly; and at the last he will declare his wickedness.
The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul.8 The envious man hath a wicked eye; he turneth away his face, and despiseth men.
The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up.9 A covetous man's eye is not satisfied with his portion; and the iniquity of the wicked drieth up his soul.
An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table.10 A wicked eye envieth [his] bread, and he is a niggard at his table.
My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings.11 My son, according to thy ability do good to thyself, and give the Lord his due offering.
Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die.12 Remember that death will not be long in coming, and that the covenant of the grave is not shewed unto thee.
Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor.13 Do good unto thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability stretch out thy hand and give to him.
Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee.14 Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good desire overpass thee.
Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours?15 Shalt thou not leave thy travails unto another? and thy labours to be divided by lot?
Give and take, and justify thy soul.16 Give, and take, and sanctify thy soul; for there is no seeking of dainties in the grave.
Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food.17 All flesh waxeth old as a garment: for the covenant from the beginning is, Thou shalt die the death.
All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree.18 As of the green leaves on a thick tree, some fall, and some grow; so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.
Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.19 Every work rotteth and consumeth away, and the worker thereof shall go withal.
Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it.20 Blessed is the man that doth meditate good things in wisdom, and that reasoneth of holy things by his understanding. ing.
And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein.21 He that considereth her ways in his heart shall also have understanding in her secrets.
Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God.22 Go after her as one that traceth, and lie in wait in her ways.
He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways:23 He that prieth in at her windows shall also hearken at her doors.
He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door:24 He that doth lodge near her house shall also fasten a pin in her walls.
He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever.25 He shall pitch his tent nigh unto her, and shall lodge in a lodging where good things are.
He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches:26 He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches.
He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory.27 By her he shall be covered from heat, and in her glory shall he dwell.
