1 All these things have I considered in my heart, that I might carefully understand them: there are just men and wise men, and their works are in the hand of God: and yet man knoweth not whether he be worthy of love, or hatred:	1 J'ai agité toutes ces choses dans mon cœur, pour en chercher avec soin l'intelligence (tacher de les comprendre). Il y a des justes et des sages, et leursœuvres sont dans la main de Dieu, et néanmoins l'homme ne sait s'il est digne d'amour ou de haine.
2 But all things are kept uncertain for the time to come, because all things equally happen to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him that offereth victims, and to him that despiseth sacrifices. As the good is, so also is the sinner: as the perjured, so he also that sweareth truth.	2 Mais tout est réservé pour l'avenir et demeure incertain, parce que tout arrive également au juste et à l'impie, au bon et au méchant, au pur et à l'impur, à celui qui immole des victimes et à celui qui méprise les sacrifices. L'innocent (Le bon) est traité comme le pécheur, et le parjure comme celui qui jure dans la vérité.
3 This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.	3 C'est là ce qu'il y a de pire (plus fâcheux) parmi tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil ; les mêmes choses arrivent à tous. Aussi les cœurs des fils des hommes sont-ils remplis de malice et de mépris pendant leur vie, et après cela ils sont conduits au séjour des morts (aux enfers).
4 There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Il n'y a personne qui vive toujours, ni qui ait cette espérance. Un chien vivant vaut mieux qu'un lion mort.
5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.	5 Les vivants, en effet, savent qu'ils mourront ; mais les morts ne connaissent plus rien, et il n'y a plus pour eux de récompense, car leur mémoire est livrée à l'oubli.
6 Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished, neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.	6 Et l'amour, et la haine, et l'envie ont péri avec eux, et ils n'ont plus de part à ce siècle, ni à tout ce (dans l'œuvre) qui se fait sous le soleil.
7 Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God.	7 Va donc, et mange ton pain avec joie, et bois ton vin avec allégresse, car tes œuvres sont agréables à Dieu.
8 At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil depart from thy head.	8 Qu'en tout temps tes vêtements soient blancs, et que l'huile ne manque point sur (cesse pas de parfumer) ta tête.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy unsteady life, which are given to thee under the sun, all the time of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherewith thou labourest under the sun.	9 Jouis (complètement) de la vie avec la femme (l'épouse) que tu aimes, pendant tous les jours de ta vie passagère, qui t'ont été donnés sous le soleil pendant tout le temps de ta vanité ; car c'est là ta part dans la vie et dans le travail que tu fais sous le soleil.
10 Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly: for neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening.	10 Tout ce que ta main peut faire, fais-le promptement, car il n'y a niœuvre, ni raison, ni sagesse, ni science dans le séjour des morts (aux enfers) où tu te précipites.
11 I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skilful: but time and chance in all.	11 J'ai tourné mes pensées ailleurs, et j'ai vu que, sous le soleil, la course n'est point aux agiles (pour les prompts), ni la guerre aux (pour les) vaillants, ni le pain aux (pour les) sages, ni les richesses aux (pour les) habiles (savants), ni la faveur aux (pour les) meilleurs artisans (ouvriers habiles) ; mais que tout dépend du temps et des circonstances (du hasard).
12 Man knoweth not his own end: but as fishes are taken with the hook, and as birds are caught with the snare, so men are taken in the evil time, when it shall suddenly come upon them.	12 L'homme ignore quelle sera sa fin : mais, (et) comme les poissons sont pris à l'hameçon, et comme les oiseaux sont pris au filet, ainsi les hommes sont saisis au temps du malheur (par un temps mauvais), lorsque tout d'un coup il fond sur eux.
13 This wisdom also I have seen under the sun, and it seemed to me to be very great:	13 J'ai vu aussi sous le soleil une action qui m'a paru d'une très grande sagesse :
14 A little city, and few men in it: there came against it a great king, and invested it, and built bulwarks round about it, and the siege was perfect.	14 Il y avait une petite ville, et peu d'hommes dans ses murs ; un grand roi vint contre elle, et l'investit, et dressa des forts tout autour, et l'assiégea de tous côtés.
15 Now there was found in it a man poor and wise, and he delivered the city by his wisdom, and no man afterward remembered that poor man.	15 Or il s'y trouvait un homme pauvre et sage, qui délivra la ville par sa sagesse, et ensuite personne ne s'est souvenu de cet homme pauvre.
16 And I said that wisdom is better than strength: how then is the wisdom of the poor man slighted, and his words not heard?	16 Et j'ai dit que la sagesse vaut mieux que la force. Comment donc la sagesse du pauvre a-t-elle été méprisée, et comment ses paroles n'ont-elles pas été écoutées ?
17 The words of the wise are heard in silence, more than the cry of a prince among fools.	17 Les paroles des sages s'entendent dans le calme (silence), plus que les cris du prince parmi les insensés.
18 Better is wisdom, than weapons of war: and he that shall offend in one, shall lose many good things.	18 La sagesse vaut mieux que les armes de guerre, et celui qui pèche en une seul(e) chose (point) perdra de grands biens.
