1 As snow in summer, and rain in harvest, so glory is not seemly for a fool.	1 Come neve d’estate e pioggia alla mietitura, così l’onore non conviene allo stolto.
2 As a bird flying to other places, and a sparrow going here or there: so a curse uttered without cause shall come upon a man.	2 Come passero che svolazza, come rondine che volteggia, così una maledizione immotivata non ha effetto.
3 A whip for a horse, and a snaffle for an ass, and a rod for the back of fools.	3 La frusta per il cavallo, la cavezza per l’asino e il bastone per la schiena degli stolti.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou be made like him.	4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, per non divenire anche tu simile a lui.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he imagine himself to be wise.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perché egli non si creda saggio.
6 He that sendeth words by a foolish messenger, is lame of feet and drinketh iniquity.	6 Si taglia i piedi e beve amarezze chi invia messaggi per mezzo di uno stolto.
7 As a lame man hath fair legs in vain: so a parable is unseemly in the mouth of fools.	7 Come pendono le gambe da uno zoppo, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
8 As he that casteth a stone into the heap of Mercury: so is he that giveth honour to a fool.	8 Come chi lega una pietra alla fionda, così chi attribuisce onori a uno stolto.
9 As if a thorn should grow in the hand of a drunkard: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.	9 Come ramo spinoso in mano a un ubriaco, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
10 Judgment determineth causes: and he that putteth a fool to silence, appeaseth anger.	10 È come un arciere che colpisce a caso chi paga lo stolto o stipendia il primo che passa.
11 As a dog that returneth to his vomit, so is the fool that repeateth his folly.	11 Come il cane torna al suo vomito, così lo stolto ripete le sue stoltezze.
12 Hast thou seen a man wise in his own conceit? there shall be more hope of a fool than of him.	12 Hai visto un uomo che è saggio ai suoi occhi? C’è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui.
13 The slothful man saith: There is a lion in the way, and a lioness in the roads.	13 Il pigro dice: «C’è una belva per la strada, un leone si aggira per le piazze».
14 As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.	14 La porta gira sui cardini, così il pigro sul suo letto.
15 The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and it grieveth him to turn it to his mouth.	15 Il pigro immerge la mano nel piatto, ma dura fatica a riportarla alla bocca.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit, than seven men that speak sentences.	16 Il pigro si crede più saggio di sette persone che rispondono con senno.
17 As he that taketh a dog by the ears, so is he that passeth by in anger, and meddleth with another man's quarrel.	17 È simile a chi prende un cane per le orecchie un passante che si intromette nella lite di un altro.
18 As he is guilty that shooteth arrows, and lances unto death :	18 Come un pazzo che scaglia tizzoni e frecce di morte,
19 So is the man that hurteth his friend deceitfully: and when he is taken, saith: I did it in jest.	19 così è colui che inganna il suo prossimo e poi dice: «Ma sì, è stato uno scherzo!».
20 When the wood faileth, the fire shall go out: and when the talebearer is taken away, contentions shall cease.	20 Per mancanza di legna il fuoco si spegne; se non c’è il calunniatore, il litigio si calma.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire, so an angry man stirreth up strife.	21 Mantice per il carbone e legna per il fuoco, tale è l’attaccabrighe per attizzare le liti.
22 The words of a talebearer are as it were simple, but they reach to the innermost parts of the belly.	22 Le parole del calunniatore sono come ghiotti bocconi, che scendono fin nell’intimo.
23 Swelling lips joined with a corrupt heart, are like an earthen vessel adorned with silver dross.	23 Come patina d’argento su un coccio di creta sono le labbra lusinghiere con un cuore maligno.
24 An enemy is known by his lips, when in his heart he entertaineth deceit.	24 Chi odia si maschera con le labbra, ma nel suo intimo cova inganni;
25 When he shall speak low, trust him not: because there are seven mischiefs in his heart.	25 anche se usa espressioni melliflue, non credergli, perché nel cuore egli ha sette obbrobri.
26 He that covereth hatred deceitfully, his malice shall be laid open in the public assembly.	26 Chi odia si nasconde con astuzia, ma la sua malizia apparirà pubblicamente.
27 He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return to him.	27 Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà dentro e chi rotola una pietra, gli ricadrà addosso.
28 A deceitful tongue loveth not truth: and a slippery mouth worketh ruin.	28 Una lingua bugiarda fa molti danni, una bocca adulatrice produce rovina.
