1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?	2 “Se arriscarmos uma palavra, talvez ficarás aflito, mas quem poderá impedir-me de falar?
3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:	3 A muitos ensinaste, deste força a mãos frágeis.
4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:	4 Tuas palavras levantavam aqueles que caíam, fortificaste os joelhos vacilantes.
5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.	5 Agora que é a tua vez, enfraqueces; quando és atingido, te perturbas.
6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?	6 Não estava a tua confiança na tua piedade, e a tua esperança na integridade de tua conduta?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?	7 Lembra-te: Qual o inocente que pereceu? Ou quando foram destruídos os justos?
8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,	8 Tanto quanto eu saiba, os que praticam a iniquidade e os que semeiam sofrimento também os colhem.
9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.	9 Ao sopro de Deus eles perecem e são aniquilados pelo vento de seu furor.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:	10 Urra o leão e seu rugido é abafado, os dentes dos leõezinhos são quebrados.
11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.	11 A fera morre porque não tinha presa e os filhotes da leoa se dispersam.
12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.	12 Uma palavra chegou a mim furtivamente, e meu ouvido percebeu o murmúrio.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,	13 Na confusão das visões da noite e na hora em que o sono se apodera das pessoas.
14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:	14 Surpreenderam-me o medo e o terror e sacudiram todos os meus ossos.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Um sopro perpassou meu rosto e fez arrepiar o pêlo do meu corpo.
16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:	16 Lá estava um ser – não lhe vi o rosto – como um espectro sob meus olhos.
17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?	17 Ouvi uma frágil voz: ‘Pode o homem ser justo na presença de Deus, pode o mortal ser puro diante do seu Criador?
18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:	18 Ele não confia nem nos seus próprios servos; até mesmo nos seus anjos encontra defeito,
19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?	19 quanto mais nos seus hóspedes em casas de barro, que têm o pó por fundamento! São esmagados como a traça.
20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.	20 Entre a manhã e a tarde são aniquilados; sem que neles se preste atenção, morrem para sempre.
21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.	21 Não foi arrancada a estaca da tenda deles? Morrem sem terem conhecido a sabedoria’.”
