DOUAI-RHEIMS	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:
2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?	2 "Oseremo rivolgerti la parola? Tu sei depresso! Eppure chi potrebbe trattenere il discorso?
3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:	3 Vedi, tu facevi la lezione a molti e ridavi vigore a mani inerti.
4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:	4 Le tue parole sostenevano i vacillanti e rinfrancavano le ginocchia che si piegavano.
5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.	5 Ma ora che tocca a te, sei depresso; ora che il colpo ti raggiunge, ne sei sconvolto.
6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?	6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia, e l'integrità della tua condotta, la tua speranza?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?	7 Rammenta, dunque: quale innocente è mai perito? E dove si son visti i giusti sterminati?
8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,	8 Per quanto ho costatato, coloro che coltivano malizia e seminano miseria, mietono tali cose.
9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.	9 Periscono a un soffio di Dio e sono annientati a un alito della sua ira.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:	10 Il ruggito del leone, le urla della belva e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.
11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.	11 Muore il leone per mancanza di preda, e i piccoli della leonessa devono disperdersi.
12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.	12 Ora mi fu detta furtivamente una parola, e il mio orecchio ne carpì il mormorìo,
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,	13 tra i fantasmi di visioni notturne, quando il letargo cade sugli uomini.
14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:	14 Un terrore mi prese e uno spavento che fece tremare tutte le mie ossa.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e mi si rizzarono i peli della carne.
16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:	16 Uno stava in piedi, non ne distinguevo l'aspetto, solo una figura apparve ai miei occhi; poi udii una voce sommessa:
17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?	17 "Può l'uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio, o un mortale essere puro davanti al suo creatore?
18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:	18 Vedi, egli non si fida nemmeno dei suoi servi, e nei suoi messaggeri riscontra difetti;
19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?	19 quanto più in coloro che abitano case di fango, i cui fondamenti si trovano nella polvere e sono corrosi dal tarlo!
20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.	20 Dall'alba alla sera sono ridotti in polvere, senza che nessuno lo avverta, periscono per sempre.
21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.	21 Non sono forse già strappate le corde della loro tenda e muoiono senza sapere come?".
