1 Méditation d’Asaf. Écoute, ô mon peuple, cet enseignement, prends au sérieux ces paroles de ma bouche.	1 Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 Je te parle: c’est un poème, je reprendrai les énigmes du passé.	2 I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning.
3 Ce qu’on nous a transmis, et ce que nous savons, ce que nos pères nous ont raconté,	3 How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 il ne faut pas que nos fils l’ignorent. Nous redirons à la génération qui monte les exploits du Seigneur, sa puissance, les merveilles qu’il a faites.	4 They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done.
5 Il enracina en Jacob ses déclarations, à Israël il donna une loi. Puis il ordonna à nos pères de le faire connaître à leurs enfants,	5 And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:
6 pour que leurs successeurs en aient la connaissance, tous ces fils qui allaient naître. Ils devaient se charger d’en instruire leurs fils	6 that another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.
7 pour que ceux-ci mettent en Dieu leur espoir, qu’ils n’oublient pas les exploits de leur Dieu mais qu’ils observent ses lois;	7 That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments.
8 qu’ils n’aillent pas imiter leurs pères, cette génération rebelle et révoltée, incapable de fixer sa décision, dont l’esprit n’était pas fidèle à Dieu.	8 That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse end exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
9 Voyez Éphraïm et ses tireurs à l’arc: ils ont pris la fuite au jour du combat.	9 The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.
10 C’est qu’ils ne respectaient pas l’alliance de Dieu, ils avaient refusé de suivre sa loi.	10 They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk.
11 Ils avaient oublié ses exploits, ses merveilles déjà faites sous leurs yeux.	11 And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.
12 Quelles merveilles ne fit-il pas devant leurs pères, au pays d’Égypte, aux champs de Tanis?	12 Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.
13 Il ouvrit la mer et les fit passer entre deux barrières d’eau.	13 He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.
14 Il les guida de jour par une nuée, et chaque nuit, par une lueur de feu.	14 And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light of
15 Il fendit les roches dans le désert afin qu’ils aient, pour boire, toute l’eau du monde.	15 He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.
16 Il fit jaillir des ruisseaux de la roche, des eaux qui s’écoulaient comme les eaux d’un fleuve.	16 He brought forth water out of the rock: and made streams run down as rivers.
17 Mais ils recommencèrent à pécher contre lui: aux terres arides ils ont défié le Très-Haut.	17 And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.
18 Ils voulurent le mettre à l’épreuve, ils lui demandèrent à manger pour survivre,	18 And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires.
19 avec des paroles insultantes pour Dieu. Ils disaient: “Dieu en est-il capable, va-t-il nous dresser la table au désert?	19 And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Il a frappé la roche et l’eau a coulé, des torrents se sont échappés; sera-t-il capable aussi de donner du pain, de servir de la viande à son peuple?”	20 Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?
21 Le Seigneur avait entendu, il s’emporta; un feu flamba contre Jacob, une fois de plus la colère frappa Israël.	21 Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.
22 C’est qu’ils n’avaient pas cru en Dieu, ils n’avaient pas compté sur lui pour les sauver.	22 Because they believed not in God: and trusted not in his salvation.
23 Mais il donna un ordre aux nuées d’en haut, il ouvrit les portillons du firmament.	23 And he had commanded the clouds from above, and had opened the doors of heaven.
24 Il leur fit pleuvoir le manger: c’était la manne, le blé céleste.	24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them the bread of heaven.
25 Et l’homme a mangé le pain des Forts quand Dieu donnait à la pause autant qu’on en voulait.	25 Man ate the bread of angels: he sent them provisions in abundance.
26 Il fit souffler dans les cieux le vent d’est, il déchaîna sa force avec le vent du sud	26 He removed the south wind from heaven: and by his power brought in the southwest wind.
27 et fit pleuvoir sur eux, non la poussière mais la viande, des volailles sans nombre comme sables des mers,	27 And he rained upon them flesh as dust: and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.
28 qui tombaient dans leur camp tout autour de leurs tentes.	28 And they fell in the midst of their camp, round about their pavilions.
29 Ils mangèrent plus que leur compte: c’était tout leur désir et Dieu l’avait comblé.	29 So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire:
30 Le désir était encore là, dans leur cœur, et la nourriture encore dans leur bouche,	30 they were not defrauded of that which they craved. As yet their meat was in their mouth:
31 quand la colère de Dieu se retourna contre eux. Il fit périr les plus solides d’entre eux, il massacra l’élite de la jeunesse d’Israël.	31 and the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones amongst them, and brought down the chosen men of Israel.
32 Après tout cela ils péchèrent encore, ils ne croyaient toujours pas à ses miracles.	32 In all these things they sinned still: and they believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Aussi Dieu, d’un souffle, éteignait leurs jours, leurs années s’achevaient dans l’épouvante.	33 And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years in haste.
34 Quand Dieu les massacrait, ils le cherchaient, ils revenaient, ils étaient tout à lui.	34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.
35 Ils se rappelaient que Dieu est leur rocher, que le Très-Haut est leur rédempteur.	35 And they remembered that God was their helper: and the most high God their redeemer.
36 Mais tout restait en paroles, leur langue ne pouvait que mentir	36 And they loved him with their mouth: and with their tongue they lied unto him:
37 car leur cœur ne se donnait pas à fond: ils n’avaient pas foi en son alliance.	37 But their heart was not right with him: nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.
38 Lui était toujours tendresse et compassion, il pardonnait la faute plutôt que de les perdre. Que de fois n’a-t-il pas fait taire sa colère au lieu de réveiller toute sa fureur!	38 But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: and will not destroy them. And many a time did he turn away his anger: and did not kindle all his wrath.
39 Ils ne sont que chair, se disait-il, quand le souffle s’échappe, il ne revient pas.	39 And he remembered that they are flesh: a wind that goeth and returneth not.
40 Comme ils l’ont défié au désert, comme ils ont su l’énerver dans la steppe!	40 How often did they provoke him in the desert: and move him to wrath in the place without water?
41 Une fois de plus ils mettaient Dieu à l’épreuve, ils exaspéraient le Saint d’Israël.	41 And they turned back and tempted God: and grieved the holy one of Israel.
42 Ils ne pensaient plus à son intervention au jour qu’il les sauva de l’adversaire,	42 They remembered not his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:
43 quand il fit en Égypte des signes, des miracles en terre de Tanis.	43 How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
44 Il avait changé les eaux du fleuve en sang, l’eau des ruisseaux n’était plus bonne à boire.	44 And he turned their rivers into blood, and their showers that they might, not drink.
45 Puis c’étaient des moustiques pour les dévorer, et des grenouilles qui faisaient des ravages.	45 He sent amongst them divers sores of flies, which devoured them: and frogs which destroyed them.
46 Il avait livré leurs récoltes au criquet, la sauterelle avait mangé tout leur travail.	46 And he gave up their fruits to the blast, and their labours to the locust.
47 Les grêlons massacraient la vigne, le givre avait tué le sycomore.	47 And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.
48 Il avait livré à la grêle leur bétail, la foudre tombait sur leurs bêtes.	48 And he gave up their cattle to the hail, and their stock to the fire.
49 Il déchaîna sur eux l’ardeur de sa colère, et ce fut l’emportement, la fureur, la détresse, un bel envoi d’anges de malheur.	49 And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.
50 Comme il donnait libre cours à sa colère, il ne leur épargna pas même la mort: il les livra à la peste.	50 He made a way for a path to his anger: he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.
51 Il frappa tout premier-né en Égypte, les premiers engendrés dans les tentes de Kam.	51 And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.
52 Alors il fit partir son peuple, ses brebis, il guida son troupeau au désert.	52 And he took away his own people as sheep: and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 Il les fit aller sûrs et sans crainte tandis que la mer passait sur leurs ennemis.	53 And he brought them out in hope, and they feared not: band the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Il les fit entrer dans ses frontières saintes, les montagnes que lui-même a conquises.	54 And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: the mountain which his right hand had purchased. And he cast out the Gentiles before them: and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.
55 Il chassa devant eux les nations, pour installer dans leurs tentes les tribus d’Israël et répartir au cordeau cet héritage.	55 And he made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.
56 Mais eux, ils défiaient le Dieu Très-Haut, ils le mettaient à l’épreuve: ils ne tenaient pas compte de ses paroles.	56 Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: and they kept not his testimonies.
57 Ils déviaient comme leurs pères, ils trahissaient, ils se retournaient comme l’arc qui tire à faux.	57 And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.
58 Leurs sanctuaires l’ont irrité, leurs idoles l’ont rendu jaloux.	58 They provoked him to anger on their hills: and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.
59 Dieu les entendait, il s’est emporté, il a rejeté pour de bon Israël.	59 God heard, and despised them, and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.
60 Il abandonna sa demeure de Silo, sa tente qu’il avait plantée chez les hommes.	60 And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.
61 Il voulut que sa Gloire aille en captivité, que son diadème tombe aux mains de l’ennemi.	61 And he delivered their strength into captivity: and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.
62 Il en voulait tellement aux siens qu’il livra son peuple à l’épée.	62 And he shut up his people under the sword: and he despised his inheritance.
63 Les garçons périrent dans les flammes et les filles restèrent sans se marier.	63 Fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not lamented.
64 Ses prêtres tombèrent sous l’épée et leurs veuves ne se lamentèrent pas.	64 Their priests fell by the sword: and their widows did not mourn.
65 Mais le Seigneur, comme un dormeur, se réveilla, comme un homme solide qui a cuvé son vin.	65 And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.
66 Il frappa l’adversaire par derrière, il le laissa humilié pour toujours.	66 And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: he put them to an everlasting reproach.
67 Puis il a écarté la famille de Joseph, il n’a pas choisi la tribu d’Éphraïm.	67 And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 Son choix est allé à la tribu de Juda, à ce mont Sion qu’il aimait.	68 But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved.
69 Il a bâti son sanctuaire, pareil aux montagnes, et comme le monde, stable à jamais.	69 And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever.
70 Il a choisi David, son serviteur, qu’il trouva à l’enclos des moutons	70 And he chose his servant David, and took him from the hocks of sheep: he brought him from following the ewes great with young,
71 alors qu’il soignait les brebis mères. Il lui a fait paître Jacob, son peuple, Israël, son héritage.	71 To feed Jacob his servant, and Israel his inheritance.
72 Il s’est fait leur pasteur, son cœur était sans faille, et d’une main sage, il les guidait.	72 And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: and conducted them by the skilfulness of his hands.
