1 Voici ce qui arriva encore: on avait arrêté sept frères avec leur mère, et le roi voulait les obliger, en les déchirant à coups de fouets et de nerfs de bœuf, à prendre de la viande de porc interdite par la Loi.	1 It came to pass also, that seven brethren with their mother were taken, and compelled by the king against the law to taste swine's flesh, and were tormented with scourges and whips.
2 L’un d’eux prit la parole au nom de tous: “Que demandes-tu et que veux-tu savoir de nous? Nous sommes prêts à mourir plutôt que de désobéir à la Loi de nos pères.”	2 But one of them that spake first said thus, What wouldest thou ask or learn of us? we are ready to die, rather than to transgress the laws of our fathers.
3 Furieux, le roi ordonna de mettre sur le feu des poêles et des chaudrons. Aussitôt qu’elles furent brûlantes,	3 Then the king, being in a rage, commanded pans and caldrons to be made hot:
4 il ordonna de couper la langue à celui qui avait parlé au nom de tous, puis de lui arracher la peau de la tête et de lui couper les extrémités, sous les yeux de ses frères et de sa mère.	4 Which forthwith being heated, he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first, and to cut off the utmost parts of his body, the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on.
5 Lorsqu’il fut complètement mutilé, le roi ordonna de l’approcher du feu et de le brûler à la poêle alors qu’il respirait encore. Pendant que la fumée de la poêle se répandait au loin, ses frères et leur mère s’encourageaient les uns les autres à mourir courageusement; ils disaient:	5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members, he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire, and to be fried in the pan: and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed, they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully, saying thus,
6 “Le Seigneur Dieu regarde, il aura sûrement pitié de nous, selon la parole de Moïse dans le Cantique qu’il a prononcé face à tous. Il y est dit: Il aura pitié de ses serviteurs.”	6 The Lord God looketh upon us, and in truth hath comfort in us, as Moses in his song, which witnessed to their faces, declared, saying, And he shall be comforted in his servants.
7 Lorsque le premier eut passé ainsi à une autre vie, on amena le second pour le supplice, on lui arracha la peau de la tête avec les cheveux et on lui demanda s’il voulait manger du porc plutôt que d’être torturé dans tous les membres de son corps.	7 So when the first was dead after this number, they brought the second to make him a mocking stock: and when they had pulled off the skin of his head with the hair, they asked him, Wilt thou eat, before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body?
8 Il répondit dans la langue de ses pères: “Non!” C’est pourquoi à son tour il subit les mêmes supplices que le premier.	8 But he answered in his own language, and said, No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order, as the former did.
9 Au moment de rendre le dernier soupir, il dit: “Tu n’es qu’un criminel! Tu nous ôtes la vie présente, mais le Roi de l’Univers nous ressuscitera pour une vie éternelle, nous qui mourons par fidélité à ses Lois.”	9 And when he was at the last gasp, he said, Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life, but the King of the world shall raise us up, who have died for his laws, unto everlasting life.
10 Après lui on tortura le troisième; à la demande du bourreau il présenta aussitôt sa langue et tendit sans hésiter ses mains.	10 After him was the third made a mocking stock: and when he was required, he put out his tongue, and that right soon, holding forth his hands manfully.
11 Il eut le courage de déclarer: “Je tiens du Ciel ces mains, mais à cause de ses lois je les sacrifie, et c’est de lui que j’attends qu’il me les rende.”	11 And said courageously, These I had from heaven; and for his laws I despise them; and from him I hope to receive them again.
12 Le roi lui-même et son entourage furent étonnés du courage de ce jeune homme qui comptait pour rien ses souffrances.	12 Insomuch that the king, and they that were with him, marvelled at the young man's courage, for that he nothing regarded the pains.
13 Lorsqu’il fut mort, on fit subir au quatrième les mêmes supplices.	13 Now when this man was dead also, they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner.
14 Sur le point de mourir il dit: “Heureux ceux qui meurent de la main des hommes avec l’espérance qu’ils ont reçue de Dieu, d’être ressuscités par lui; mais pour toi il n’y aura pas de résurrection pour la vie.”	14 So when he was ready to die he said thus, It is good, being put to death by men, to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him: as for thee, thou shalt have no resurrection to life.
15 On amena ensuite le cinquième et on le tortura. Les yeux fixés sur le roi, il dit:	15 Afterward they brought the fifth also, and mangled him.
16 “Quoique mortel, tu as autorité sur les hommes et tu fais ce que tu veux, mais ne crois pas que notre race soit abandonnée par Dieu.	16 Then looked he unto the king, and said, Thou hast power over men, thou art corruptible, thou doest what thou wilt; yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God;
17 Attends, et tu verras sa grande puissance et comment il te tourmentera, toi et ta race.”	17 But abide a while, and behold his great power, how he will torment thee and thy seed.
18 Après lui on amena le sixième. Sur le point de mourir il dit: “Ne te fais aucune illusion, c’est en péchant contre notre Dieu que nous nous sommes attiré ces malheurs, et maintenant nous passons par des épreuves peu communes.	18 After him also they brought the sixth, who being ready to die said, Be not deceived without cause: for we suffer these things for ourselves, having sinned against our God: therefore marvellous things are done unto us.
19 Mais toi qui oses faire la guerre à Dieu, ne pense pas que tu resteras sans châtiment.”	19 But think not thou, that takest in hand to strive against God, that thou shalt escape unpunished.
20 Elle fut vraiment admirable, et elle mérite de rester célèbre, cette mère qui vit mourir ses sept fils en l’espace d’un jour! Elle le supporta sans faiblir à cause de l’espérance qu’elle mettait dans le Seigneur.	20 But the mother was marvellous above all, and worthy of honourable memory: for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day, she bare it with a good courage, because of the hope that she had in the Lord.
21 Elle encourageait chacun d’eux dans la langue de ses pères, et remplie des plus beaux sentiments, elle soutenait par un courage viril sa tendresse de mère.	21 Yea, she exhorted every one of them in her own language, filled with courageous spirits; and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach, she said unto them,
22 Elle leur disait: “Je ne sais comment vous êtes apparus dans mes entrailles: ce n’est pas moi qui vous ai donné l’esprit et la vie, ce n’est pas moi qui ai assemblé les différents membres qui forment votre corps.	22 I cannot tell how ye came into my womb: for I neither gave you breath nor life, neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you;
23 Le Créateur du monde, qui a formé l’homme à sa naissance et qui a conçu l’origine de tous les êtres, vous rendra dans sa miséricorde l’esprit et la vie, puisque maintenant vous vous méprisez vous-mêmes par amour pour ses lois.”	23 But doubtless the Creator of the world, who formed the generation of man, and found out the beginning of all things, will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again, as ye now regard not your own selves for his laws' sake.
24 Antiocus pensa qu’elle était en train de l’insulter et de le maudire. Comme le plus jeune était encore en vie, le roi lui dit, et même il lui promit par serment de le rendre à la fois riche et heureux s’il abandonnait les traditions de ses ancêtres. Il lui promettait d’en faire son ami et de lui confier de hautes fonctions.	24 Now Antiochus, thinking himself despised, and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech, whilst the youngest was yet alive, did not only exhort him by words, but also assured him with oaths, that he would make him both a rich and a happy man, if he would turn from the laws of his fathers; and that also he would take him for his friend, and trust him with affairs.
25 Comme le garçon n’y prêtait aucune attention, le roi fit approcher la mère et lui parla avec insistance pour qu’elle conseille à son fils de sauver sa vie.	25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him, the king called his mother, and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life.
26 Comme il insistait tellement, elle accepta de persuader son fils.	26 And when he had exhorted her with many words, she promised him that she would counsel her son.
27 Elle se pencha donc vers lui et, trompant le cruel tyran, elle parla ainsi à son fils dans la langue de ses pères: “Mon fils, aie pitié de moi! Je t’ai porté neuf mois dans mon sein, je t’ai allaité durant trois ans, je t’ai nourri et élevé jusqu’à l’âge où tu es: en toutes choses j’ai pris soin de toi.	27 But she bowing herself toward him, laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my son, have pity upon me that bare thee nine months in my womb, and gave thee such three years, and nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and endured the troubles of education.
28 Je t’en supplie, mon enfant, regarde le ciel et la terre, vois tout ce qu’ils contiennent, et sache que c’est Dieu qui les a faits de rien: c’est ainsi qu’est apparue la race humaine.	28 I beseech thee, my son, look upon the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.
29 Ne redoute pas ce bourreau, mais montre-toi digne de tes frères, accepte la mort pour que je te retrouve avec tes frères au temps de la miséricorde.”	29 Fear not this tormentor, but, being worthy of thy brethren, take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren.
30 Elle parlait encore quand le jeune homme dit: “Qu’attendez-vous? Je n’obéis pas aux ordres du roi, j’obéis aux prescriptions de la Loi donnée par Moïse à nos pères.	30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words, the young man said, Whom wait ye for? I will not obey the king's commandment: but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses.
31 Mais toi qui as amené tant de malheurs sur les Hébreux, tu n’échapperas pas aux mains de Dieu!	31 And thou, that hast been the author of all mischief against the Hebrews, shalt not escape the hands of God.
32 Nous, nous souffrons à cause de nos péchés,	32 For we suffer because of our sins.
33 Notre Seigneur, qui est vivant, nous a montré un moment sa colère pour nous corriger et nous éduquer, mais il se réconciliera avec ses serviteurs.	33 And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastening and correction, yet shall he be at one again with his servants.
34 Toi par contre, impie et le plus impur de tous les hommes, ne te gonfle pas d’orgueil, laisse là tes rêves et cesse de lever la main contre les serviteurs de Dieu,	34 But thou, O godless man, and of all other most wicked, be not lifted up without a cause, nor puffed up with uncertain hopes, lifting up thy hand against the servants of God:
35 car tu n’as pas encore échappé au jugement du Dieu tout-puissant qui veille sur toute chose.	35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgment of Almighty God, who seeth all things.
36 Nos frères ont souffert une épreuve passagère en échange d’une vie qui ne finit pas, ils sont déjà couverts par l’Alliance de Dieu. Toi au contraire, par la justice de Dieu, tu porteras le châtiment de ton orgueil.	36 For our brethren, who now have suffered a short pain, are dead under God's covenant of everlasting life: but thou, through the judgment of God, shalt receive just punishment for thy pride.
37 Comme mes frères, je livre mon corps et ma vie pour les lois de mes pères. Je supplie Dieu d’avoir bientôt pitié de notre race et de t’amener par les tourments et la souffrance à reconnaître qu’il est le seul Dieu.	37 But I, as my brethren, offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers, beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation; and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess, that he alone is God;
38 Que la colère du Tout-Puissant, justement déchaînée contre toute notre race, s’arrête enfin sur moi et sur mes frères.”	38 And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty, which is justly brought upon our nation, may cease.
39 Le roi fut profondément blessé par ces paroles de défi. Devenu furieux, il tortura celui-ci plus cruellement que les autres.	39 Than the king' being in a rage, handed him worse than all the rest, and took it grievously that he was mocked.
40 C’est ainsi que ce jeune homme mourut, dans la droiture et la totale confiance dans le Seigneur.	40 So this man died undefiled, and put his whole trust in the Lord.
41 Enfin la mère mourut, la dernière, après ses fils.	41 Last of all after the sons the mother died.
42 Mais en voilà assez sur la question des repas rituels et sur des supplices qui passèrent toute mesure.	42 Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts, and the extreme tortures.
