1 Quand il vit que les choses tournaient à son avantage, Jonathan choisit des hommes qu’il envoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l’amitié avec les Romains.	1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.
2 Il envoya des lettres semblables à Sparte et dans d’autres villes.	2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.
3 Ses envoyés se rendirent donc à Rome, ils entrèrent au Sénat et dirent: “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, et la nation des Juifs, nous ont envoyés pour renouveler l’amitié et l’alliance que vous avez établies avec eux précédemment.”	3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."
4 Le Sénat leur donna des lettres de recommandation pour que, dans chaque pays, on les achemine en paix jusqu’au pays de Juda.	4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.
5 Et voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathan écrivit aux gens de Sparte:	5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, le Sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple juif saluent les habitants de Sparte, leurs frères.	6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.
7 Déjà dans les temps passés une lettre a été envoyée au grand prêtre Onias de la part de votre roi Aréios; elle affirmait que vous êtes bien nos frères comme le montre la copie qui suit.	7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.
8 Onias accueillit avec honneur l’homme qui lui était envoyé, il reçut la lettre où il était clairement parlé d’alliance et d’amitié.	8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.
9 Nous ne voulons pas aujourd’hui vous supplier à ce sujet, car les livres saints qui sont entre nos mains sont notre réconfort.	9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,
10 Mais nous ne voudrions pas devenir des étrangers pour vous, et nous avons voulu réaffirmer notre fraternité et notre amitié, car bien des années se sont écoulées depuis que nous vous avons envoyé une lettre.	10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.
11 Nous ne cessons de penser à vous en tous temps, dans nos fêtes et nos autres jours saints, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste et convenable de le faire pour des frères.	11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.
12 Nous sommes heureux de votre réussite!	12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.
13 Pour nous, ce sont les épreuves et les guerres continuelles qui nous ont accablés, car les rois qui nous entourent nous ont combattus.	13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.
14 À l’occasion de ces guerres, nous n’avons voulu être à charge ni à vous, ni à nos autres alliés et amis,	14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;
15 et de fait le secours du Ciel nous est venu en aide, nous avons été délivrés et nos ennemis ont été humiliés.	15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.
16 C’est pourquoi nous avons choisi Nouménios fils d’Antiocos, et Antipater fils de Jason, les mêmes que nous avons envoyés aux Romains pour renouveler avec eux l’amitié et l’alliance d’autrefois.	16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.
17 Nous leur avons demandé d’aller aussi chez vous pour vous saluer et vous apporter cette lettre pour réaffirmer notre fraternité.	17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.
18 Maintenant, ayez la bonté de nous répondre à ce sujet.”	18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."
19 Voici maintenant la copie de la lettre qui avait été envoyée à Onias:	19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:
20 “Aréios, roi des Spartiates, salue Onias le grand prêtre!	20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.
21 On a découvert dans un écrit que les Spartiates et les Juifs sont frères: ils sont de la race d’Abraham.	21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.
22 Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire pour nous dire si tout va bien pour vous.	22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.
23 De notre côté nous vous écrivons ceci: vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous et les nôtres sont à vous. Nous avons donc donné des ordres pour vous le faire savoir.”	23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."
24 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus l’attaquer avec une armée plus forte encore qu’auparavant.	24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.
25 Il partit donc de Jérusalem et marcha à leur rencontre jusqu’au pays de Hamat: ainsi il ne leur donnait pas le temps d’envahir son territoire.	25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.
26 Il envoya des espions dans leur camp et à leur retour ils l’informèrent que les Syriens faisaient des préparatifs pour le surprendre pendant la nuit.	26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.
27 Aussi, lorsque le soleil fut couché, Jonathan ordonna à ses hommes de veiller et de se tenir en armes toute la nuit, prêts au combat, et il mit en place des postes avancés tout autour du camp.	27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.
28 Quand les ennemis apprirent que Jonathan et les siens étaient prêts à combattre, ils furent pris de peur et remplis d’épouvante; ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp et prirent la fuite.	28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.
29 Comme ils voyaient des feux allumés, Jonathan et ses hommes ne s’aperçurent qu’au matin de leur départ.	29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.
30 Jonathan les poursuivit mais sans réussir à les rejoindre, car ils avaient traversé le fleuve Éleutère.	30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.
31 Jonathan se retourna alors contre les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, il les battit et s’empara de leurs biens,	31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.
32 puis il leva le camp, arriva à Damas et parcourut toute la province.	32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.
33 De son côté Simon s’était mis en route et s’était avancé jusqu’à Ascalon et aux forteresses voisines; ensuite il se retourna vers Joppé et l’occupa.	33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,
34 Il avait appris en effet que les habitants de cette forteresse avaient l’intention de la livrer à Démétrius; il y mit une garnison pour garder la ville.	34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.
35 De retour à Jérusalem, Jonathan convoqua les anciens du peuple et décida avec eux de construire des forteresses en Judée,	35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,
36 de rehausser les murs de Jérusalem et de bâtir un rempart élevé entre la Citadelle et la ville pour l’isoler de la ville et pour que ses occupants ainsi isolés, ne puissent plus ni acheter ni vendre.	36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.
37 Ils se réunirent pour reconstruire la ville car une partie du rempart vers le torrent qui se trouve à l’est était tombée. On remit à neuf le quartier appelé Chafénata.	37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.
38 De son côté Simon reconstruisit Adida dans le Bas-Pays, il la fortifia et y plaça des portes garnies de verrous.	38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.
39 Tryphon voulait régner sur l’Asie, se faire couronner, et mettre la main sur le roi Antiocus,	39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.
40 mais il craignait que Jonathan ne l’en empêche et ne lui fasse la guerre. C’est pourquoi Tryphon cherchait le moyen de mettre la main sur lui et de le faire mourir; il se mit ainsi en route et arriva à Beth-Chéan.	40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.
41 Jonathan sortit au-devant de lui avec 40 000 hommes choisis parmi les meilleurs et il marcha vers Beth-Chéan.	41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.
42 Quand Tryphon vit que Jonathan arrivait avec une forte armée, il n’osa pas mettre la main sur lui.	42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.
43 Il le reçut donc avec honneur, il le recommanda à tous ses Amis, lui offrit des cadeaux et commanda à ses Amis et à ses soldats de lui obéir comme à lui-même.	43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.
44 Il dit alors à Jonathan: “Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tous ces hommes, alors qu’il n’y a entre nous aucune menace de guerre.	44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?
45 Renvoie-les donc chez eux, gardes-en seulement quelques uns pour t’accompagner et viens avec moi à Ptolémaïs. Je remettrai cette ville entre tes mains ainsi que les autres forteresses, les autres troupes et tous les serviteurs du roi, puis je repartirai à Antioche car c’est pour cela que je suis venu.”	45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."
46 Jonathan lui fit confiance et fit comme il avait dit; il renvoya ses hommes qui retournèrent en Judée,	46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.
47 et il n’en garda près de lui que 3 000. Il en envoya 2 000 en Galilée et n’en prit que 1 000 pour l’accompagner.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.
48 Mais Jonathan était à peine entré à Ptolémaïs que les habitants refermèrent les portes, mirent la main sur lui et tuèrent par l’épée tous ceux qui l’accompagnaient.	48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.
49 Pendant ce temps, Tryphon envoyait une armée et des cavaliers en Galilée pour massacrer dans la Grande Plaine tous les hommes de Jonathan.	49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.
50 Mais quand ceux-ci entendirent que Jonathan avait été pris et mis à mort avec tous ses compagnons, ils s’encouragèrent les uns les autres et firent la route en rangs serrés, prêts à combattre.	50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.
51 En voyant qu’ils étaient décidés à défendre leur vie, ceux qui les poursuivaient firent demi-tour,	51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.
52 et c’est ainsi qu’ils rentrèrent tous sans difficulté au pays de Juda; ils pleurèrent Jonathan et ses compagnons et furent saisis d’une grande crainte. Tout Israël fit un grand deuil.	52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.
53 Toutes les nations d’alentour ne pensaient qu’à les éliminer; on y disait: “Ils n’ont plus ni chef ni allié, attaquons-les maintenant et effaçons leur mémoire du milieu des hommes!”	53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."
