1 Quand il vit que les choses tournaient à son avantage, Jonathan choisit des hommes qu’il envoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l’amitié avec les Romains.	1 And Jonathan saw that the time served him, and he chose certain men and sent them to Rome, to confirm and to renew the amity with them:
2 Il envoya des lettres semblables à Sparte et dans d’autres villes.	2 And he sent letters to the Spartans, and to other places according to the same form.
3 Ses envoyés se rendirent donc à Rome, ils entrèrent au Sénat et dirent: “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, et la nation des Juifs, nous ont envoyés pour renouveler l’amitié et l’alliance que vous avez établies avec eux précédemment.”	3 And they went to Rome, and entered into the senate house, and said: Jonathan the high priest, and the nation of the Jews have sent us to renew the amity, and alliance as it was before.
4 Le Sénat leur donna des lettres de recommandation pour que, dans chaque pays, on les achemine en paix jusqu’au pays de Juda.	4 And they gave them letters to their governors in every place, to conduct them into the land of Juda with peace.
5 Et voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathan écrivit aux gens de Sparte:	5 And this is a copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, le Sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple juif saluent les habitants de Sparte, leurs frères.	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the ancients of the nation, and the priests, and the rest of the people of the Jews, to the Spartans, their brethren, greeting.
7 Déjà dans les temps passés une lettre a été envoyée au grand prêtre Onias de la part de votre roi Aréios; elle affirmait que vous êtes bien nos frères comme le montre la copie qui suit.	7 There were letters sent long ago to Onias the high priest from Arius who reigned then among you, to signify that you are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 Onias accueillit avec honneur l’homme qui lui était envoyé, il reçut la lettre où il était clairement parlé d’alliance et d’amitié.	8 And Onias received the ambassador with honour: and received the letters wherein there was mention made of the alliance, and amity.
9 Nous ne voulons pas aujourd’hui vous supplier à ce sujet, car les livres saints qui sont entre nos mains sont notre réconfort.	9 We, though we needed none of these things, having for our comfort the holy books that are in our hands,
10 Mais nous ne voudrions pas devenir des étrangers pour vous, et nous avons voulu réaffirmer notre fraternité et notre amitié, car bien des années se sont écoulées depuis que nous vous avons envoyé une lettre.	10 Chose rather to send to you to renew the brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers to you altogether: for there is a long time passed since you sent to us.
11 Nous ne cessons de penser à vous en tous temps, dans nos fêtes et nos autres jours saints, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste et convenable de le faire pour des frères.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our festivals, and other days, wherein it is convenient, remember you in the sacrifices that we offer, and in our observances, as it is meet, and becoming to remember brethren.
12 Nous sommes heureux de votre réussite!	12 And we rejoice at your glory.
13 Pour nous, ce sont les épreuves et les guerres continuelles qui nous ont accablés, car les rois qui nous entourent nous ont combattus.	13 But we have had many troubles and wars on every side, and the kings that are round about us, have fought against us.
14 À l’occasion de ces guerres, nous n’avons voulu être à charge ni à vous, ni à nos autres alliés et amis,	14 But we would not be troublesome to you, nor the rest of our allies and friends in these wars.
15 et de fait le secours du Ciel nous est venu en aide, nous avons été délivrés et nos ennemis ont été humiliés.	15 For we have had help from heaven, and we have been delivered, and our enemies are humbled.
16 C’est pourquoi nous avons choisi Nouménios fils d’Antiocos, et Antipater fils de Jason, les mêmes que nous avons envoyés aux Romains pour renouveler avec eux l’amitié et l’alliance d’autrefois.	16 We have chosen therefore Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to the Romans to renew with them the former amity and alliance.
17 Nous leur avons demandé d’aller aussi chez vous pour vous saluer et vous apporter cette lettre pour réaffirmer notre fraternité.	17 And we have commanded them to go also to you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters, concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 Maintenant, ayez la bonté de nous répondre à ce sujet.”	18 And now you shall do well to give us an answer hereto.
19 Voici maintenant la copie de la lettre qui avait été envoyée à Onias:	19 And this is the copy of the letter which he had sent to Onias:
20 “Aréios, roi des Spartiates, salue Onias le grand prêtre!	20 Arius king of the Spartans to Onias the high priest, greeting.
21 On a découvert dans un écrit que les Spartiates et les Juifs sont frères: ils sont de la race d’Abraham.	21 It is found in writing concerning the Spartans, and the Jews, that they are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham.
22 Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire pour nous dire si tout va bien pour vous.	22 And now since this is come to our knowledge, you do well to write to us of your prosperity.
23 De notre côté nous vous écrivons ceci: vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous et les nôtres sont à vous. Nous avons donc donné des ordres pour vous le faire savoir.”	23 And we also have written back to you: That our cattle, and our possessions are yours: and yours, ours. We therefore have commanded that these things should be told you.
24 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus l’attaquer avec une armée plus forte encore qu’auparavant.	24 Now Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come again with a greater army than before to fight against him.
25 Il partit donc de Jérusalem et marcha à leur rencontre jusqu’au pays de Hamat: ainsi il ne leur donnait pas le temps d’envahir son territoire.	25 So he went out from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amath: for he gave them no time to enter into his country.
26 Il envoya des espions dans leur camp et à leur retour ils l’informèrent que les Syriens faisaient des préparatifs pour le surprendre pendant la nuit.	26 And he sent spies into their camp, and they came back and brought him word that they designed to come upon them in the night.
27 Aussi, lorsque le soleil fut couché, Jonathan ordonna à ses hommes de veiller et de se tenir en armes toute la nuit, prêts au combat, et il mit en place des postes avancés tout autour du camp.	27 And when the sun was set, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms all night long ready to fight, and he set sentinels round about the camp.
28 Quand les ennemis apprirent que Jonathan et les siens étaient prêts à combattre, ils furent pris de peur et remplis d’épouvante; ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp et prirent la fuite.	28 And the enemies heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, and they were struck with fear, and dread in their heart: and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Comme ils voyaient des feux allumés, Jonathan et ses hommes ne s’aperçurent qu’au matin de leur départ.	29 But Jonathan and they that were with him knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Jonathan les poursuivit mais sans réussir à les rejoindre, car ils avaient traversé le fleuve Éleutère.	30 And Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they had passed the river Eleutherus.
31 Jonathan se retourna alors contre les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, il les battit et s’empara de leurs biens,	31 And Jonathan turned upon the Arabians that are called Zabadeans: and he defeated them, and took the spoils of them.
32 puis il leva le camp, arriva à Damas et parcourut toute la province.	32 And he went forward, and came to Damascus, and passed through all that country.
33 De son côté Simon s’était mis en route et s’était avancé jusqu’à Ascalon et aux forteresses voisines; ensuite il se retourna vers Joppé et l’occupa.	33 Simon also went forth, and came as far as Ascalon, and the neighbouring fortresses, and he turned aside to Joppe, and took possession of it,
34 Il avait appris en effet que les habitants de cette forteresse avaient l’intention de la livrer à Démétrius; il y mit une garnison pour garder la ville.	34 (For he heard that they designed to deliver the hold to them that took part with Demetrius,) and he put a garrison there to keep it.
35 De retour à Jérusalem, Jonathan convoqua les anciens du peuple et décida avec eux de construire des forteresses en Judée,	35 And Jonathan came back, and called together the ancients of the people, and he took a resolution with them to build fortresses in Judea,
36 de rehausser les murs de Jérusalem et de bâtir un rempart élevé entre la Citadelle et la ville pour l’isoler de la ville et pour que ses occupants ainsi isolés, ne puissent plus ni acheter ni vendre.	36 And to build up walls in Jerusalem, and raise a mount between the castle and the city, to separate it from the city, that so it might have no communication, and that they might neither buy nor sell.
37 Ils se réunirent pour reconstruire la ville car une partie du rempart vers le torrent qui se trouve à l’est était tombée. On remit à neuf le quartier appelé Chafénata.	37 And they came together to build up the city: for the wall that was upon the brook towards the east was broken down, and he repaired that which is called Caphetetha:
38 De son côté Simon reconstruisit Adida dans le Bas-Pays, il la fortifia et y plaça des portes garnies de verrous.	38 And Simon built Adiada in Sephela, and fortified it, and set up gates and bars.
39 Tryphon voulait régner sur l’Asie, se faire couronner, et mettre la main sur le roi Antiocus,	39 Now when Tryphon had conceived a design to make himself king of Asia, and to take the crown, and to stretch out his hand against king Antiochus:
40 mais il craignait que Jonathan ne l’en empêche et ne lui fasse la guerre. C’est pourquoi Tryphon cherchait le moyen de mettre la main sur lui et de le faire mourir; il se mit ainsi en route et arriva à Beth-Chéan.	40 Fearing lest Jonathan would not suffer him, but would fight against him: he sought to seize upon him, and to kill him. So he rose up and came to Bethsan.
41 Jonathan sortit au-devant de lui avec 40 000 hommes choisis parmi les meilleurs et il marcha vers Beth-Chéan.	41 And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 Quand Tryphon vit que Jonathan arrivait avec une forte armée, il n’osa pas mettre la main sur lui.	42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with a great army, he durst not stretch forth his hand against him,
43 Il le reçut donc avec honneur, il le recommanda à tous ses Amis, lui offrit des cadeaux et commanda à ses Amis et à ses soldats de lui obéir comme à lui-même.	43 But received him with honour, and commended him to all his friends, and gave him presents: and he commanded his troops to obey him, as himself.
44 Il dit alors à Jonathan: “Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tous ces hommes, alors qu’il n’y a entre nous aucune menace de guerre.	44 And he said to Jonathan: Why hast thou troubled all the people, whereas we have no war?
45 Renvoie-les donc chez eux, gardes-en seulement quelques uns pour t’accompagner et viens avec moi à Ptolémaïs. Je remettrai cette ville entre tes mains ainsi que les autres forteresses, les autres troupes et tous les serviteurs du roi, puis je repartirai à Antioche car c’est pour cela que je suis venu.”	45 Now therefore send them back to their own houses: and choose thee a few men that may be with thee, and come with me to Ptolemais, and I will deliver it to thee, and the rest of the strong holds, and the army, and all that have any charge, and I will return and go away: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 Jonathan lui fit confiance et fit comme il avait dit; il renvoya ses hommes qui retournèrent en Judée,	46 And Jonathan believed him, and did as he said: and sent away his army, and they departed into the land of Juda:
47 et il n’en garda près de lui que 3 000. Il en envoya 2 000 en Galilée et n’en prit que 1 000 pour l’accompagner.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men: of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 Mais Jonathan était à peine entré à Ptolémaïs que les habitants refermèrent les portes, mirent la main sur lui et tuèrent par l’épée tous ceux qui l’accompagnaient.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates of the city, and took him: and all them that came in with him they slew with the sword.
49 Pendant ce temps, Tryphon envoyait une armée et des cavaliers en Galilée pour massacrer dans la Grande Plaine tous les hommes de Jonathan.	49 Then Tryphon sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Mais quand ceux-ci entendirent que Jonathan avait été pris et mis à mort avec tous ses compagnons, ils s’encouragèrent les uns les autres et firent la route en rangs serrés, prêts à combattre.	50 But they, when they understood that Jonathan and all that were with him were taken and slain, encouraged one another, and went out ready for battle.
51 En voyant qu’ils étaient décidés à défendre leur vie, ceux qui les poursuivaient firent demi-tour,	51 Then they that had come after them, seeing that they stood for their lives, returned back.
52 et c’est ainsi qu’ils rentrèrent tous sans difficulté au pays de Juda; ils pleurèrent Jonathan et ses compagnons et furent saisis d’une grande crainte. Tout Israël fit un grand deuil.	52 Whereupon they all came peaceably into the land of Juda. And they bewailed Jonathan, and them that had been with him, exceedingly: and Israel mourned with great lamentation.
53 Toutes les nations d’alentour ne pensaient qu’à les éliminer; on y disait: “Ils n’ont plus ni chef ni allié, attaquons-les maintenant et effaçons leur mémoire du milieu des hommes!”	53 Then all the heathens that were round about them, sought to destroy them. For they said:
	54 They have no prince, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away the memory of them from amongst mem.
