BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 In tre cose s'è compiaciuto l'animo mio, le quali sono laudate dinanzi da Dio e dalli uomini;	1 There are three things my soul delights in, and which are delightful to God and to all people: concordbetween brothers, friendship between neighbours, and a wife and husband who live happily together.
2 cioè, la concordia de' fratelli, e l'amore del prossimo, e il marito e la moglie che si consentano insieme.	2 There are three sorts of people my soul hates, and whose existence I consider an outrage: the poorswol en with pride, the rich who is a liar and an adulterous old man who has no sense.
3 Tre specie di genti ebbe in odio l'anima mia, e sono molto gravato dell' animo di coloro;	3 If you have gathered nothing in your youth, how can you discover anything in your old age?
4 cioè, povero superbo, ricco bugiardo, vecchio pazzo e disensato.	4 How fine a thing: sound judgement with grey hairs, and for greybeards to know how to advise!
5 Tu che non radunasti nella giovinezza tua, come troverai nella vecchiezza tua?	5 How fine a thing: wisdom in the aged, and considered advice coming from people of distinction!
6 Come è bella cosa alla canizie il giudicio, e dell' antico conoscere il consiglio!	6 The crown of the aged is ripe experience, their glory, the fear of the Lord.
7 E come è bellissima alli antichi la sapienza, e il glorioso intelletto e il consiglio!	7 There are nine things I can think of which strike me as happy, and a tenth which is now on my tongue:the man who can be proud of his children, he who lives to see the downfal of his enemies;
8 La corona de' vecchi è il molto sapere; e la gloria loro è il timore di Dio.	8 happy is he who keeps house with a sensible wife; he who does not toil with ox and donkey; he whohas never sinned with his tongue; he who does not serve a man less worthy than himself;
9 Io magnificai nove cose del cuore da non sospicarle; e la decima cosa diroe nella lingua degli uomini:	9 happy is he who has acquired good sense and can find attentive ears for what he has to say;
10 l' uomo lo quale vivendo s' allegra ne' suoi figliuoli, vedendo la sovversione delli suoi inimici.	10 how great is he who has acquired wisdom; but unsurpassed is one who fears the Lord.
11 Beato colui che abita colla femina savia, e colui che per la lingua sua non è caduto, e colui che non servì a coloro ch' erano indegni di lui.	11 The fear of the Lord surpasses everything; what can compare with someone who has mastered that?
12 Beato colui che ha trovato vero amico, e colui che parla giustizia a colui che l'ascolta.	12
13 Come è grande colui che trovò sapienza e scienza! ma egli non è maggiore di coloro che temono Iddio.	13 Any wound rather than a wound of the heart! Any spite rather than the spite of woman!
14 Il timore di Dio si puose sopra tutte le cose.	14 Any evil rather than an evil caused by an enemy! Any vengeance rather than the vengeance of a foe!
15 Beato è colui a cui è donato d' avere il timore di Dio; e colui che teme Iddio, a cui sarà egli assomigliato?	15 There is no poison worse than the poison of a snake, there is no fury worse than the fury of an enemy.
16 Lo timore di Dio è il principio del suo amore; ma il principio della fede è proprio a congiugnerlo a lui.	16 I would sooner keep house with a lion or a dragon than keep house with a spiteful wife.
17 Ogni piaga è tristizia del cuore; e ogni malizia si è riezza della femina.	17 A woman's spite changes her appearance and makes her face as grim as a bear's.
18 E vederà ogni piaga, e non piaga del cuore;	18 When her husband goes out to dinner with his neighbours, he cannot help heaving bitter sighs.
19 e ogni riezza, e non riezza della femina;	19 No spite can approach the spite of a woman, may a sinner's lot be hers!
20 e ogni rancore, e non rancore di coloro che odiano;	20 Like the climbing of a sandhill for elderly feet, such is a garrulous wife for a quiet husband.
21 e ogni vendetta, e non vendetta de' nimici.	21 Do not be taken in by a woman's beauty, never lose your head over a woman.
22 Non è capo più malvagio, che quello del serpente;	22 Bad temper, insolence and shame hold sway where the wife supports the husband.
23 e non è ira sopra l'ira della femina. Più mi piacerebbe di abitare con leoni e draconi, che abitare con femina mala.	23 Low spirits, gloomy face, stricken heart: such is a spiteful wife. Slack hands and sagging knees: suchis the wife who does not make her husband happy.
24 La riezza della femina muta la faccia sua, e sì come orso diserta il volto suo, e sì come uno sacco dimostralo. In mezzo delli prossimi suoi	24 Sin began with a woman, and thanks to her we must al die.
25 pianse il marito suo, e udendo sospiroe uno poco.	25 Do not let water find a leak, nor a spiteful woman give free rein to her tongue.
26 Ogni malizia è picciola, rispetto alla malizia della femina; la parte de' peccatori caggia sopra lei.	26 If she wil not do as you tel her, get rid of her.
27 Come lo salire arenoso è nelli piedi del veterano, così è la femina allinguata all' uomo pacifico.
28 Non guardare nella bellezza della femina, e non desiderare la femina nella bellezza sua.
29 L'ira della femina (nella faccia sua) e grande irreverenza e grande confusione.
30 La femina, s'ella averae principato, sarà contraria al marito suo.
31 Cuore umile e faccia trista e piaga di morte è la femina malvagia.
32 Mano debile, ginocchia dinervate, si è la femina che non beatifica il suo marito.
33 Il principio del peccato fu fatto dalla femina, e per lei tutti morremo.
34 Non dare all' acqua tua uscita, eziandio poca; nè alla cattiva femina concedere licenza d' uscire fuori.
35 Se ella non anderae a lato alla tua mano, ella ti confonderae nel conspetto de' tuoi nimici.
36 Tagliala dalla carne tua, acciò ch' ella non ti usi in mala carne sempre.
