“Be sons of the Lord your God. You shall not cut yourselves, nor make yourselves bald, because of the dead.1 'You are children of Yahweh your God. You must not gash yourselves or shave your foreheads for thedead.
For you are a holy people, for the Lord your God. And he chose you, so that you may be a people particularly his, out of all the nations on earth.2 For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be his ownpeople from al the peoples on the earth.
You shall not eat the things that are unclean.3 'You must not eat anything disgusting.
These are the animals which you ought to eat: the ox, and the sheep, and the goat,4 These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goat,
the stag and the roe deer, the gazelle, the wild goat, the addax, the antelope, the giraffe.5 deer, gazel e, roebuck, ibex, antelope, oryx, mountain sheep.
Every beast which has a hoof divided into two parts and which also chews the cud, you shall eat.6 You may eat any animal that has a divided and cloven hoof and that is a ruminant.
But those which chew over again, but do not have a divided hoof, you must not eat, such as the camel, the hare, and the hyrax. Since these chew the cud, but do not have a divided the hoof, they shall be unclean to you.7 Of those, however, that are ruminants and of those that have a divided and cloven hoof you may noteat the fol owing: the camel, the hare and the coney, which are ruminants but have no cloven hoof; you mustclass them as unclean.
The pig also, since it has a divided hoof, but does not chew over again, shall be unclean. Their flesh shall not be eaten, and you shall not touch their carcasses.8 So also the pig, which though it has a cloven hoof is not a ruminant; you must class it as unclean. Youmust neither eat the meat of such animals nor touch their dead bodies.
These you shall eat out of all that dwells in the waters: whatever has fins and scales, you shall eat.9 'Of whatever lives in water you may eat the fol owing: you may eat anything that has fins and scales.
Whatever is without fins and scales, you shall not eat, for these are unclean.10 But you must not eat anything without fins and scales: you must class it as unclean.
All the clean birds, you shall eat.11 'You may eat al clean birds,
You shall not eat those that are unclean: such as the eagle, and the griffin, and the osprey,12 but the fol owing birds you must not eat: the tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,
the crane, and the vulture, and the kite, according to their kind,13 the kite and the several kinds of buzzard,
and any kind of raven,14 al kinds of raven,
and the ostrich, and the owl, and the gull, and the hawk, according to their kind,15 the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the several kinds of hawk,
the heron, and the swan, and the ibis,16 owl, barn owl, ibis,
and the sea bird, the marsh hen, and the night raven,17 pelican, white vulture, cormorant,
the pelican and the plover, each in their kind, likewise the crested hoopoe and the bat.18 stork, the several kinds of heron, hoopoe and bat.
And anything which crawls and also has little wings shall be unclean, and shall not be eaten.19 You are to class al winged insects as unclean and must not eat them.
All that is clean, you shall eat.20 You may eat any clean fowl.
But whatever has died of itself, you shall not eat from it. Give it to the sojourner, who is within your gates, so that he may eat, or sell it to him. For you are the holy people of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in the milk of his mother.21 'You must not eat any animal that has died a natural death. You may give it to a resident foreigner toeat, or sel it to a foreigner. For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God. 'You must not boil a kid in itsmother's milk.
Each year, you shall separate the tithes out of all your crops which spring forth from the earth.22 'Every year, you must take a tithe of what your fields produce from what you have sown
And you shall eat these in the sight of the Lord your God, in the place which he will choose, so that his name may be invoked there: the tenth part of your grain and wine and oil, and the firstborn from the herds and your sheep. So may you learn to fear the Lord your God at all times.23 and, in the presence of Yahweh your God, in the place where he chooses to give his name a home, you must eat the tithe of your wheat, of your new wine and of your oil, and the first-born of your herd and flock;and by so doing, you wil learn always to fear Yahweh your God.
But when the way and the place which the Lord your God will have chosen is further away, and he will have blessed you, so that you are not able to carry all these things to it,24 'If the road is too long for you, if you cannot bring your tithe because the place in which Yahwehchooses to make a home for his name is too far away, when Yahweh your God has blessed you,
you shall sell them all, so as to turn them into money, and you shall carry it in your hand, and you shall set out for the place which the Lord will choose.25 you must convert it into money and, with the money clasped in your hand, you must go to the placechosen by Yahweh your God;
And you shall buy with the same money whatever pleases you, either from the herds or from the sheep, and also wine and liquor, and all that your soul desires. And you shall eat in the sight of the Lord your God, and you shall feast: you and your household.26 there you may spend the money on whatever you like, oxen, sheep, wine, fermented liquor, anythingyou please. There you must eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and rejoice, you and your household.
As for the Levite, who is within your gates, take care that you do not abandon him, for he has no other portion within your possession.27 Do not neglect the Levite living in your community, since he has no share or heritage of his ownamong you.
In the third year, you shall separate another tenth part of all the things which spring forth for you at that time, and you shall store it within your gates.28 'At the end of every three years, you must take al the tithes of your harvests for that year and col ectthem in your community.
And the Levite, who has no other portion or possession with you, and the sojourner as well as the orphan and the widow who are within your gates, shall approach and eat and be satisfied, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the works of your hands which you shall do.”29 Then the Levite -- since he has no share or heritage of his own among you -- the foreigner, theorphan and the widow living in your community, wil come and eat all they want. And so Yahweh your God wilbless you in al the labours that you undertake.'
