CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINKING JAMES BIBLE
“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be like ten virgins, who, taking their lamps, went out to meet the groom and the bride.1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
But five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
For the five foolish, having brought their lamps, did not take oil with them.3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
Yet truly, the prudent ones brought the oil, in their containers, with the lamps.4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was delayed, they all fell asleep, and they were sleeping.5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
But in the middle of the night, a cry went out: ‘Behold, the groom is arriving. Go out to meet him.’6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
Then all those virgins rose up and trimmed their lamps.7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
But the foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give to us from your oil, for our lamps are being extinguished.’8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
The prudent responded by saying, ‘Lest perhaps there may not be enough for us and for you, it would be better for you to go to the vendors and buy some for yourselves.’9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
But while they were going to buy it, the groom arrived. And those who were prepared entered with him to the wedding, and the door was closed.10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
Yet truly, at the very end, the remaining virgins also arrived, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
But he responded by saying, ‘Amen I say to you, I do not know you.’12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
And so you must be vigilant, because you do not know the day or the hour.13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
For it is like a man setting out on a long journey, who called his servants and delivered to them his goods.14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, yet to another he gave one, to each according to his own ability. And promptly, he set out.15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
Then he who had received five talents went out, and he made use of these, and he gained another five.16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
And similarly, he who had received two gained another two.17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
But he who had received one, going out, dug into the earth, and he hid the money of his lord.18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
Yet truly, after a long time, the lord of those servants returned and he settled accounts with them.19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
And when he who had received five talents approached, he brought another five talents, saying: ‘Lord, you delivered five talents to me. Behold, I have increased it by another five.’20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
His lord said to him: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful over a few things, I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the gladness of your lord.’21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Then he who had received two talents also approached, and he said: ‘Lord, you delivered two talents to me. Behold, I have gained another two.’22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
His lord said to him: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful over a few things, I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the gladness of your lord.’23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Then he who had received one talent, approaching, said: ‘Lord, I know that you are a hard man. You reap where you have not sown, and gather where you have not scattered.24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
And so, being afraid, I went out and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
But his lord said to him in response: ‘You evil and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered.26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
Therefore, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and then, at my arrival, at least I would have received what is mine with interest.27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
And so, take the talent away from him and give it the one who has ten talents.28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he shall have in abundance. But from him who has not, even what he seems to have, shall be taken away.29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
And cast that useless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
But when the Son of man will have arrived in his majesty, and all the Angels with him, then he will sit upon the seat of his majesty.31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
And all the nations shall be gathered together before him. And he shall separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
And he shall station the sheep, indeed, on his right, but the goats on his left.33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in;35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Then the just will answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when have we see you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink?37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you?38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?’39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then he shall also say, to those who will be on his left: ‘Depart from me, you accursed ones, into the eternal fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink;42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger and you did not take me in; naked, and you did not cover me; sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.’43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then they will also answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you?’44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then he shall respond to them by saying: ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did not do it to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.’45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go into eternal punishment, but the just shall go into eternal life.”46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
