Deuteronomy 14

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 'You are children of Yahweh your God. You must not gash yourselves or shave your foreheads for thedead.	1 בנים אתם ליהוה אלהיכם לא תתגדדו ולא תשימו קרחה בין עיניכם למת
2 For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be his ownpeople from al the peoples on the earth.	2 כי עם קדוש אתה ליהוה אלהיך ובך בחר יהוה להיות לו לעם סגלה מכל העמים אשר על פני האדמה
3 'You must not eat anything disgusting.	3 לא תאכל כל תועבה
4 These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goat,	4 זאת הבהמה אשר תאכלו שור שה כשבים ושה עזים
5 deer, gazel e, roebuck, ibex, antelope, oryx, mountain sheep.	5 איל וצבי ויחמור ואקו ודישן ותאו וזמר
6 You may eat any animal that has a divided and cloven hoof and that is a ruminant.	6 וכל בהמה מפרסת פרסה ושסעת שסע שתי פרסות מעלת גרה בבהמה אתה תאכלו
7 Of those, however, that are ruminants and of those that have a divided and cloven hoof you may noteat the fol owing: the camel, the hare and the coney, which are ruminants but have no cloven hoof; you mustclass them as unclean.	7 אך את זה לא תאכלו ממעלי הגרה וממפריסי הפרסה השסועה את הגמל ואת הארנבת ואת השפן כי מעלה גרה המה ופרסה לא הפריסו טמאים הם לכם
8 So also the pig, which though it has a cloven hoof is not a ruminant; you must class it as unclean. Youmust neither eat the meat of such animals nor touch their dead bodies.	8 ואת החזיר כי מפריס פרסה הוא ולא גרה טמא הוא לכם מבשרם לא תאכלו ובנבלתם לא תגעו
9 'Of whatever lives in water you may eat the fol owing: you may eat anything that has fins and scales.	9 את זה תאכלו מכל אשר במים כל אשר לו סנפיר וקשקשת תאכלו
10 But you must not eat anything without fins and scales: you must class it as unclean.	10 וכל אשר אין לו סנפיר וקשקשת לא תאכלו טמא הוא לכם
11 'You may eat al clean birds,	11 כל צפור טהרה תאכלו
12 but the fol owing birds you must not eat: the tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,	12 וזה אשר לא תאכלו מהם הנשר והפרס והעזניה
13 the kite and the several kinds of buzzard,	13 והראה ואת האיה והדיה למינה
14 al kinds of raven,	14 ואת כל ערב למינו
15 the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the several kinds of hawk,	15 ואת בת היענה ואת התחמס ואת השחף ואת הנץ למינהו
16 owl, barn owl, ibis,	16 את הכוס ואת הינשוף והתנשמת
17 pelican, white vulture, cormorant,	17 והקאת ואת הרחמה ואת השלך
18 stork, the several kinds of heron, hoopoe and bat.	18 והחסידה והאנפה למינה והדוכיפת והעטלף
19 You are to class al winged insects as unclean and must not eat them.	19 וכל שרץ העוף טמא הוא לכם לא יאכלו
20 You may eat any clean fowl.	20 כל עוף טהור תאכלו
21 'You must not eat any animal that has died a natural death. You may give it to a resident foreigner toeat, or sel it to a foreigner. For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God. 'You must not boil a kid in itsmother's milk.	21 לא תאכלו כל נבלה לגר אשר בשעריך תתננה ואכלה או מכר לנכרי כי עם קדוש אתה ליהוה אלהיך לא תבשל גדי בחלב אמו
22 'Every year, you must take a tithe of what your fields produce from what you have sown	22 עשר תעשר את כל תבואת זרעך היצא השדה שנה שנה
23 and, in the presence of Yahweh your God, in the place where he chooses to give his name a home,you must eat the tithe of your wheat, of your new wine and of your oil, and the first-born of your herd and flock;and by so doing, you wil learn always to fear Yahweh your God.	23 ואכלת לפני יהוה אלהיך במקום אשר יבחר לשכן שמו שם מעשר דגנך תירשך ויצהרך ובכרת בקרך וצאנך למען תלמד ליראה את יהוה אלהיך כל הימים
24 'If the road is too long for you, if you cannot bring your tithe because the place in which Yahwehchooses to make a home for his name is too far away, when Yahweh your God has blessed you,	24 וכי ירבה ממך הדרך כי לא תוכל שאתו כי ירחק ממך המקום אשר יבחר יהוה אלהיך לשום שמו שם כי יברכך יהוה אלהיך
25 you must convert it into money and, with the money clasped in your hand, you must go to the placechosen by Yahweh your God;	25 ונתתה בכסף וצרת הכסף בידך והלכת אל המקום אשר יבחר יהוה אלהיך בו
26 there you may spend the money on whatever you like, oxen, sheep, wine, fermented liquor, anythingyou please. There you must eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and rejoice, you and your household.	26 ונתתה הכסף בכל אשר תאוה נפשך בבקר ובצאן וביין ובשכר ובכל אשר תשאלך נפשך ואכלת שם לפני יהוה אלהיך ושמחת אתה וביתך
27 Do not neglect the Levite living in your community, since he has no share or heritage of his ownamong you.	27 והלוי אשר בשעריך לא תעזבנו כי אין לו חלק ונחלה עמך
28 'At the end of every three years, you must take al the tithes of your harvests for that year and col ectthem in your community.	28 מקצה שלש שנים תוציא את כל מעשר תבואתך בשנה ההוא והנחת בשעריך
29 Then the Levite -- since he has no share or heritage of his own among you -- the foreigner, theorphan and the widow living in your community, wil come and eat all they want. And so Yahweh your God wilbless you in al the labours that you undertake.'	29 ובא הלוי כי אין לו חלק ונחלה עמך והגר והיתום והאלמנה אשר בשעריך ואכלו ושבעו למען יברכך יהוה אלהיך בכל מעשה ידך אשר תעשה
