NEW JERUSALEM | NOVA VULGATA |
---|---|
as fire sets brushwood alight, as fire makes water boil -- to make your name known to your foes; thenations would tremble at your presence, | 1 Sicut ignis succendit sarmenta, aquam ebullire facit ignis, ut notum facias nomen tuum inimicis tuis, a facie tua gentes turbentur, |
at the unexpected miracles you would do. (Oh, that you would come down, in your presence themountains would quake!) | 2 cum feceris mirabilia, quae non sperabamus. Descendisti, et a facie tua montes defluxerunt. |
Never has anyone heard, no ear has heard, no eye has seen any god but you act like this for the sakeof those who trust him. |
You come to meet those who are happy to act uprightly; keeping your ways reminds them of you. Yes,you have been angry and we have been sinners; now we persist in your ways and we shal be saved. | 4 Occurris laetanti, facienti iustitiam et his, qui in viis tuis recordantur tui. Ecce tu iratus es, et peccavimus; in ipsis a saeculo nos salvabimur. |
We have al been like unclean things and our upright deeds like filthy rags. We wither, al of us, likeleaves, and al our misdeeds carry us off like the wind.
There is no one to invoke your name, to rouse himself to hold fast to you, for you have hidden your facefrom us and given us up to the power of our misdeeds. |
And yet, Yahweh, you are our Father; we the clay and you our potter, al of us are the work of yourhands.
Yahweh, do not let your anger go too far and do not remember guilt for ever. Look, please, we are alyour people; | 8 Ne irascaris, Domine, nimis et ne ultra memineris iniquitatis; ecce, respice: populus tuus omnes nos. |
your holy cities have become a desert, Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem a wasteland. |
Our holy and glorious Temple, in which our ancestors used to praise you, has been burnt to theground; al our delight lies in ruins. |
Yahweh, can you restrain yourself at al this? Wil you stay silent and afflict us beyond endurance? | 11 Numquid super his continebis te, Domine, tacebis et affliges nos vehementer? |
